I know that this topic maybe a bit of overkill. But as I read these forums, everyone seems to have tips and advice that they picked up from playing the game over and over again, here's just one of mine:
Before you go to Toroia, make sure you visit the Village of Mist and get the Change/Apparite staff, this one item will make your time in the forests around Toroia much more enjoyable. The Change/Apparite staff turns most enemies into pigs. Which seems pretty useless except that when an enemy has a counter attack, such as the SwordRat around Toroia, they won't use it. You can save many a cure potion if you turn them into pigs and then attack them. They will not counter attack! Try it for yourselves. Other strategies are welcomed! When your characters return to your party, their level is determined by the highest level of your party (fairly certain anyway). As such, Mt Ordeals provides a great place to solo level with Polom abd Cecil since fire2 ends almost every battle. The experience is rather nice and a chocobo forest is just south of the summit. Once Polom is a higher level, you can kill off Cecil and rake in the Exp. Or, using the Legend sword as Cecil, but the battles take a little longer. Cure2 is an option as well for the holy knight. Once you get Yang back, he'll be the same level as Polom. As will Rosa and Kain. You'll find having Cure4 (althought not necessary since you're such a high level) can be rather useful at that point in the game. This tactic is also very useful in the harder version when leveling five characters can be rather tedious and time consuming.

O.K., here's a good one: Once you get to Mr. Ordeals there is another way to level up. If you walk along the left side of the mountain range above Mt. Ordeals all the way to the top, the enemies are much more powerful. Just like the spot east of Provoka in FFClassic. The enemies, Treants, Stingrats and some sort of cat are native to Toroia which is why they're so tough. I use this area to level up every time I play through. It get's alot easier once Palom learns Virus. Can anyone else confirm this?

Quote (Blythe @ 11th March 2005 11:49) umm just macro your game to get exp on thier own? thats probley the easiest way or tape your controler the right way so you move a little bit up and little bit down and have a turbo control and just put a stack of quarters on the button How is that an in-game strategy? -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Quote The enemies, Treants, Stingrats and some sort of cat are native to Toroia which is why they're so tough. They are Panthers. They randomly drop Catclaws (useful for Yang). You can also find Pythons.. who can sometimes drop Poison arrows. Quote When your characters return to your party, their level is determined by the highest level of your party (fairly certain anyway). I disagree. I believe that the characters that leave your party and come back later... get the experience that you receive in battles between the time they leave and the time they come back. Think about it for a moment. The best way to measure that is between the time Kain leaves (for the 2nd time) and the time he comes back (permanently).. it'll be much easier to measure that time differential. An easier way to measure this... you are at the save point in the Tower of Zot.. you get back Rosa+Kain... check their experience.. Reset the game, fight one battle (note the exp you get).. and get back Rosa+Kain... you will see their experience increase by the amount you have received in battle.. (though I haven't tested it myself, this is the most simple theory you can explore for yourself) Quote Before you go to Toroia, make sure you visit the Village of Mist and get the Change/Apparite staff, this one item will make your time in the forests around Toroia much more enjoyable. The Change staff works like Piggy's effectiveness is 100% (which is usually not the case when you cast the spell normally anyhow) Quote Can anyone else confirm this? Yes.. I can confirm that.. Quote It get's alot easier once Palom learns Virus. Well, you can kinda attempt this place when you reach level 13 (you would have learned all the level 2 spells Cure 2/Fire 2/Ice 2/Bolt 2) Once you've reached level 19 (Virus), it is already easy. Fire 2 is probably the most useful attack spell in that area anyhow. It's best to reach level 23 for Quake. This will make the Baigan battle (at Baron) significantly easier (Quake goes through Wall) This post has been edited by deathlike2 on 12th March 2005 04:04 |

If one character is behind everyone else in levels, here's the thing to do.Have the party go to the area outside of Baron. Then, have everyone else kill themselves in a battle except for the person lacking in levels. Why Baron, you ask?Because there are weak enemies that won't do much to mess up the process with attacks. Now,go to an area that has enemies around your level (Use Scan to check their levels).Keep defeating the enemies until you are a bit stronger, then go to an area with stronger enemies that are around your higher level.Keep repeating the process until your character is around the level of the strongest party member. Why do you want to keep the lackey alive, though?Because EXP is divided amongst the members, and if all of the members are dead, the lackey gets all the EXP!

I once, late in the game, got everyone killed off except Rydia, and literally went around the world leveling her up. Even with all my efforts, she still seemed to lag, though, and at the end of the game, Kain was level 66 (he seemed to level fastest), Cecil 66 (second fastest), and Rydia 62 (slowest). This was all while when I finally revived the rest of my party she was one level behind Cecil.
The problem with using Moogle_Knight's strategy is that it doesn't work for all characters. A character who could, alone, tackle monsters around her/his level would probably be pretty close to the desired level anyways, while an underleveled character like Rydia couldn't herself easily take on a batch of enemies around her current level (I mean other than by spamming Bahamut). One suggestion that I personally think would correct the leveling problem some people seem to have is to fight most random battles. Run only if you have to, e.g. because you don't have necessary items, or the battle really is too tough, or you've got very little HP, etc.. At least FFIIus (I'm not sure about FFIVj) is designed well enough that you shouldn't have to do much extra fighting for leveling. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. I've said this before, but Mount Ordeals is a cakewalk if you buy White (Holy) arrows for the twins beforehand. It is ridiculous how much they kick ass against the undead.

Here's a pretty thing:
One of the best places to level up in the underground, before Rosa learns Levitate/Float: In the middle of the underground all the way to the left is a sliver of land just long enough to walk three steps on. The monsters on this piece of land are stronger than any other "outside" area in the underground. They have the same template as the others, moths and larva or whatever but the colors and names are different. -------------------- Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave. |

I'm looking for leveling strategies when you first get Edge (HardType, btw).
Currently, he's level 32, and basically been paired off with Kain, who kills things dead most of the time. However, the shops have a lack of potions to buy, and I'm afraid I'll have to go out of the cave entirely if I want more, so I'm thinking of using Cecil and Edge instead to level up with. Are there any other suggestions? Is Edge's current level fine? -------------------- The cure for the common n00b. Never expect that what you see and feel is real!!
