I chose odin, he gives you Meteor. Raiden just gave me quick, not very useful in my opinion.

Wait... With quick you get 2 automatic next turns right? so you could use quick, then cast a spell or attack, then cast quick.. repeat. Your enemies would never have a chance... Oh and I would probley put Meteor on everyone, then change it to Raiden

Speed increase isn't that great when it's in incriments of one.

You can learn Meteor on Crusader (and faster) and Quick on nothing else.

I also give the auto beserkers speed bonuses. Gau/Umaro become a machine!

Raiden, mainly because quick roks, when used with Gem Box, Ultima, and have loads of MP and Osmose. So I chose Raiden.

It's not really worth it after the loss you get from not gaining other more useful stats.

Raiden.

I can see the point of the speed increase for Gau and Mog but I prefer a magic strategy. You can get Meteor from Crusader but you can't get Quick anywhere else. (Not in spoilers because those are in the manual.) I do not like the idea going to that castle twice for such a small reason as a speed boost. In addition to all of that, I don't have the patience to manage another esper.

DP it is when you get 2 attacks to every one that another character gets. Even more so for white magic like life 2/3. SuperManBoy, Umaro can't use espers silly. Unless, that is you are cheating.
Edit
Forgot to mention this. If you added running shoes to a +2 speed boost like DP implied he wanted, it would be like +4 with running shoes. Don't you think that would be a little overpowered DP? At least considering that the other espers can only give you +2.

I agree with these statements. Plus it's just plain fun to watch super fast characters in action. Quick disrupts the flow of things just like the Gem Box and the Offering. If you process orders quickly and give your characters high speed battles end fast. Those rapid one hit attacks from all four characters add up fast, and such a strategy proves for a more intense gameplay. Odin and the speed boosts play an important role in that equation. The other stats are less important because it's so easy to hit the 9999 damage cap anyway.

Well, I liked Odin mainly because he has that speed + 1 bonus, and teaches Meteor at an early level. And plus, hes one of my favorite espers.
I hate to choose Raiden because I wanted to make everyone learn quick, but Odin is better in my opinion.

It's not really who you prefer so much as when you should switch. Eventually, everyone you want to have Meteor will have it or you'll get Crusader, True Edge is indisputably better than Atom Edge anyway (higher hit rate, all other functions the same), and as with Meteor, you're going to run out of people you want to have Speed + 1 some time. Once you've had your fill of Speed + 1 and get Crusader, for example, there's no longer a reason for Odin to be around.

Besides, Speed + 1 isn't great without a significant investment of levels. I'd rather have more Mag.Pwr anyway mostly. 10 levels of Speed doesn't make that much of a difference, for example, but 20 more points of Mag.Pwr will be heard (of course, this says nothing about when Mag.Pwr hits 128). Unless you're an Ultima spammer of course. Most people forgo any respectable strategy for microwave solutions anyway, especially in FF6 where they're so readily available....

By microwave, I mean something easy, fast, and deadly, not the deadliest of all attacks. If that were the case, there would be a lot more Setzer fans as a result of the Slot guide.

While Odin has always been one of my favorite summons, I can never keep him around very long before getting Raiden. I usually do allow every member in my current party to level up once or twice with his Magicite equipped just so, I dunno, I can feel like I got something out of him before switching over for completion's sake. I've never really been too concerned with the speed bonus as it is, and like what's already been said, Crusader grants you Meteor as well.

Great thing about those two is that you have the chance use both of them and don't have to make a cataclysmic (except not) decision like with the Ragnarok. You can boost your characters' speed as much as you want and still not have to sacrifice Quick. smile.gif

Go for Odin, grab a lot of Speed boosts, then eventually change it to Raiden. That's always my strategy, the speed boost is one of my favorite things about the WoR.

I always changed it to raiden right away (note: you don't have to go to the castle twice, you can do it on the first visit, Tonepoet). However, I think on my next playthrough I'm going to turn locke, gau, and mog into speed demons and see what difference it makes.

If anyone is having a dilemma about this and REALLY want both espers at the same time, you can with the ZSNES Save State Editor. For more info on how to use the program, go here and scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Yes, I indeed forgot, I put Umaro instead of Mog. Opps!! Yes, speed only increases the rate at which you recover to attack again... but... if you're twice as fast, you hit twice as much making your attaks twice as strong for the same time span. This is especially useful considering there is a maximum damage cap on damaging enemies.

Odin. He gives a speed boost. I usually max out one person's speed, finish with strength to lvl 99, and send them through one paert of Kefka's tower ALONE with Genji Glove+Offering. And as such, I generally forget about Raiden completely.

quick is completely useless if you play on ACTIVE like i do,

even if i use quick, the animation on any spell i could possibly want to use is long enough to give my oponent a turn anyway, and the coding allows them to take it, since all quick does is instantly refill my bar instead of the way Xmagic is scripted where i do two things at once. Its much more effective to pump cyans strength and have him do a quadra slam, yeah, slam, not slice, for 9,999 damage each, or stick mog in a snow muffler and laugh as monsters desperately try to hurt him and fail.

bismark gives cyan that str bonus already, i dont need raiden for that, and since quick is useless anyway to me, i would rather have the only esper in the game that gives me the option of speed +1. i hardly use speed plus one, but at least i have access to it, raiden only gives str +1 , same as bismark, and has a summon that is almost effective as a merton or ultima, except.........not......whoptee do

Both Odin and Raiden are just as useful in my opinion, but since I am an avid leveler and perfectionest, I kept Odin all the way to the point where all 14 of my characters were level 99, because Odin is the only summon which adds a speed boost, and Raiden only gives you a vigor boost, which you can get anywhere else anyway. However, the Quick spell is a very very useful spell, as you can do the most total damage in one turn with the help of the Quick spell. (to multiple enemies). I can see why people have different opinions though, because some people don't have the patience to sit there and work up their characters to max.

Raiden.

Quick is cool, and... who needs that +1 Speed?
+2 Strength, though not unique, is better.
