When Christmas comes, I shall finally experience a game other than Final Fantasy Tactics. I am going to get FFI and FFVII for Christmas. I would like everyone to tel me a bit about FFVII: just the basic story and your opinion of the game.

When the game starts, the main idea is to destroy an evil company that is killing the entire planet. Then, the game has an interesting plot twist when your goal changes. Obviously, I won't spoil anything else.

The game has an interesting ability learning called Materia. Materia are like equipment. You have to equip a character with materia ( as much as a weapon can hold ), then, as you win battles, the Materia will gain levels and become better skills.
There are some types of materia. Summon ( to make summons, obviously ), Command ( to have an special skills, like Steal, Throw, Scan, Control, Blue Magic, etc. ), Magic ( spells like Ice, Bolt, Fire, Cure, Esuna, Bio, etc. as materia levels upgrades to the spells will be obtained )
I don't remember the other types of materia. It has been a while since the last time I played FF7.

The last comment and opinion I can say is that, it is a great game. Maybe the graphics aren't great, but the storyline and the music are really good. It is a good game, you can get confused with the storyline and maybe some sidequests can be tiring ( Gold Chocobo sidequest is draining my life x_X ), but it is a highly recommendable game, although at the beginning it can be kind of boring.

Hold up... you never played FF7 before??? Then I must explain. In FF7, you are the Ex-SOLDIER Cloud Strife, a mercenary. You have been hired by the terrorist group AVALANCHE to bomb a mako reactor in the Shinra's floating capital city of Midgar. Mako is the energy of the world that is monopolized by Shinra, which happens to be an evil corporation. But mako energy, unfortunately, kills the planet. So you, as Cloud, with AVALANCHE, set out to bomb one of the 8 mako reactors in Midgar in a quest to save the planet. That's where the game begins.

Battle System: your regular standard turn based atb.

Magic System: Materia. Materia are these things that you equip to people. Each different materia lets you cast a different spell, ie fire materia lets you cast fire magic, ifrit materia lets you summon ifrit, etc. You can also equip commands with materia, ie w-item materia lets you use w-item, throw materia lets you use throw, etc. Materia also has levels. Take a fire materia for example. On level one it lets you cast fire. On level two it lets you cast fire 2. On level three it lets you cast fire 3. Ap that you gain in battle is used to level up your materia. It's confusing but you'll get in in the first half hour.

My opinion: FF7 was the first FF I played. Before it I had played many old school rpg series ( Chrono, BoF, Tales of, Star Oceans) but FF. It was the first FF I ever touched. I have a very positive attitude towards this game. When I first played it the graphics were great, but I still think they're ok, even though they are VERY dated. It had a great story (I never saw those plot twists coming), a great battle system, and I liked the music and characters. Overall, I think that it is a must-play for every rpg fan.

As you've played Tactics, I'm sure you'll be happy to see where Cloud really comes from. ^^

You should enjoy this one, it was my first FF and has moments that can leave ya' breathless. Just don't expect anything too stunning visually...as one of the first PS games it's rough around the edges obviously.

The Materia system--the system by which you use magic and different abilities--is often revered as one of the better battle-related systems to date, and you should recognize the references to materia (if you did the FFT propositions) and, of course, Cloud, since FF7 is the game he originates in.

+ Great soundtrack
+ Great characters
+ Interesting locations
+ Sidequests a-plenty
+ Fairly good plot
+ Choppy-ish graphics / Awesome FMV sequences

Actually an emoticon-only post is spam. Or at least it's considered spam on most of the forums I've been a member/staff member of so far. Oh well, whatever. FFVII was basically the Square-Enix pilot game for the PSX and also the main reason I got my first PSX. Yes, I had two PSXs and now I have two PS2s. Isn't it wonderful? Back on-topic, FFVII was a futuristic FF that is largely centered around life in general and rocks called Materia. I think you'll enjoy it, it's very good, albeit a little confusing. laugh.gif
