Although it's mentioned in RPGamer's news report that he may come back in the future, for the moment, Nobuo Uematsu is unfortunately leaving Square Enix.
The reason for his leaving is for greener pastures, although at the time it is not clear which pastures he feels are greener, and why. It is mentioned, however, that he has quite a busy schedule, especially with his band The Black Mages. After working with Square Enix for 20 years, Uematsu noted that his most memorable composition is Eyes on Me, the main theme from FFVIII, and that his favourite game compositions were from FFVI, FFVII and FFVIII. EDIT: Sometime after my posting this, RPGamer ammended their news post to say that this is a RUMOUR. So while it's possible, as of now, this piece of news has not been completely verified. EDIT #2: It has now been confirmed that the above is true. Uematsu will be joining a company called "Smile Please" in November, and does not wish to call his leaving quitting, as that term is too extreme. **** I was a little taken aback when I saw this piece of news, though the man has put in 20 years already with Squeenix. He did do the music for FFXII, so we'll have that at least. This post has been edited by Elena99 on 31st October 2004 20:47 -------------------- I had an old signature. Now I've changed it. |

That is unfortunate for me to hear, I really do hope he does come back, but this is sad, but at least he doing the music for FFXII .

That's a shame. I can't say it surprises me though, what with him kinda winding down lately and not being the main composer for FFX, FFX-2 (I don't think he did any of its music), and FFXII, or so I've heard. Maybe he's getting a little fed up with Square Enix too.

Personally i think it would be hot if he showed up at Mist Walker with the other golden boys. A revival of old school integrity and quality would appear like we've never seen before i think. Old school dedication to an amazing product + new school graphics and technology + Awesome music= several hundred dollars spent by me alone. I really hope he ends up there!

That's not a bad idea, cause most of the great guys have already left Square Enix, and he's one of the only original guys left. Together they all would create a real RPG again. And yes, I would buy a Mist Walker RPG. I am not really shocked by this, because I have been expecting it for some time now. I mean, just about everyone else he's worked with left Square Enix and formed their own companies. Also, Nobuo has been composing less ans less with each new FF. He's not even the composer for FFXII anymore, he's just a producer or something like that. I would imagine that he'd be fed up and leave with all this going on. -------------------- Music is a mysterious thing... Sometimes, it makes people remember things that they do not expect. Dewa mata Uematsu sama!
Well, I'm choosing to be as positive as possible about this by saying, "Here's a chance for Squenix to prove that they don't solely depend on lucking out with some uber talented individuals, but instead can both find some new talent and maintain their own standards." Imagine me saying all that... As for good ol' Noby- hope the new company works out well (as if he hears me) and hooray for new games with kick-arse music! -------------------- Get me off this Disciplinary Committee so I can play any FF except for FF8!!! |

Hmm, no wonder I couldn't find anything about Smile Please. It is his own company. Didn't realize that, and the news linked didn't really imply it.
"UPDATE: 10/31/04: Nobuo Uematsu's official fan club has confirmed this report, saying that Uematsu will leave Square Enix this month and join a company named "Smile Please" in November." And it looks like he's already gone, gone since October. No news like old news. Gamespot has coverage. http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/11/01/news_6111914.html This post has been edited by Elessar on 2nd November 2004 16:54 -------------------- Visions of Peace - Four Generals, One Empire, and the Returners caught in the middle. |

Nobuo hasn't 'truly' worked on an FF since FF9 really... For FFX he oversaw the music composing but did very little himself. He had nothing to do with FFTA or FFX-2 at all, and I dunno about XI though...
Anyway, he also oversaw the music of XII the same way he did X, and it's 'rumoured' that some of his old classic scores like One Winged Angel may be used (That was a while ago, so dunno the facts) I think there's a good chance he'll be called on to oversee FFs in the future too, the only dif is the name "Smile Please" will be in the credits. We'll just have to wait and see. -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

He did the composition for the Faye Wong song, "Eyes on Me", correct? If so, this is truly a sad day for Square-Enix. That's like the best video game song ever, in my opinion.

Well, this will be a good test for Square. It seems that their dream team is slowly falling apart and trying to build a future for the company. if they can come out of this with another amazing composer, it's just another victory for Square in the grand scheme of things. People retire, and they can't always depend on the same character designers, producers, composers, programmers, etc.

Indeed, I was just stumbling around ffonline today and saw this and went 'What!? Nuuuuu!!!" because he's honestly a musical genius. I respect the man's composing talents immensly. I am, however, pleased to hear that he may well be doing work with SE in the future, even while with his new company.

I think it's alright. He's past his prime, and his creative juices have been dried out. The quality of his music has been on the decline, so I don't understand why people think this is a tragic loss. The guy's only human. There are plenty of other quality composers out there. It's time Square got some fresh people in with fresh ideas and lots of creative energy.

uematsu, while skilled, is not the only talented game musican in japan.
ffX-2 has a great sountrack, i consider "1000 words" a lot better than "eyes on me". Mystic quest, the battle themes were just amazing! also no uematso involvement. however, i think he could descripe feelings with his music far better than all the other musican's i heard out there. and i think "feelings" in a ff game are their speciality, this makes a ff for me. all final fantasy games have this in common if they are old games or new ones, if they are more medieval or science fiction oriented, and that feel was certainly part of the great soundtrack created by Mr. Uematsu. Whatever Mr. Uematsu will do, he is a living legend and as long as I will be alive, I will listen to is past, current and future creations. Who cares about square, they are going in a dead-end. Their game are losing all their fundamental spirit. ff12 looks like starwars 7. They just lost a genius. Im a FF true fan for 16 years now (im 26), but I really think that the next coming FF's are just going to be a true disaster. Hopefully, Mr Uematsu is not going to participate to this mascarade.
