RPGs usually have some humor in them (sometimes hidden), so what's your favorite funny thing from an RPG? For me, they'd be:
Seiken Densutsu 3: When Angela accuses of Duran of not inviting her into his house because he's hiding a stash of porn Secret of Evermore: When Queen BlueGarden tries to attack Hero by jumping off a balcony and crashes through the floor and the last crash is delayed (CRASH, CRASH, CRASH.................CRASH), I just found that funny. SoE: When Hero is in the colliseum and when you have the spear equipped the announcer calls him "Some Loser with a stick!" La Pucelle Tactics: After talking to the cow in town a couple of chapters later (I forgot which one) he says "......fatso" as an insult (and the reaction afterwards helps as well) Final Fantasy V: When Bartz is messing with the turtle and says "But this is fun!" when he's told to stop FFVI: Kefka's "That Son-of-a-Submariner!" line I'm sure there's more but that's all I can remember -------------------- |

I've never been fond of in-game humor. Nothing sucks more than having a very serious, dramatic moment suddently be ruined by a character's antics. Or worse, the comical relief cute-but-useless and typically non-human character chiming in. But a few games do come to mind where the humor fits in properly. Scenes where the atmosphere between characters is relaxed and everyone's all buddy-buddy are great for humor; scenes where something dramatic is occuring (like a narrow escape, meeting an important character, or preparing for an important battle) are not.
Tales of Phantasia has a scene where the humor, while crude, fits in perfectly: the boat scene. Everyone's sitting around, enjoying a drink, and slowly getting drunker and drunker. It does not feel out of place. It's slightly random, and quite amusing. In retrospect, the worse humor I've ever seen were battle commands. A few examples come to mind, such as FF8's eat command or Umaro's character-chucking antics in FF6. I enjoy dramatic battles that make me feel like I've overcome terrifying odds, not battles that make me feel like I've just put on a kiddy circus show. Maybe my sense of humor is just a lil' dried out. ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

This isn't FF-related, but sure was great. In the first Grandia, something happens to Feena. Well, this game has random vocals chime in. I remember this one point, she screams in a really suggestive voice, "Oh! Justin, my body, it's burning!" XD It was great.

(edit: changes to Tellah avatar to commemorate this moment) Edit: adding another entry: SO much of Super Mario RPG. Wow, that was such a great game, with underappreciated humor. Almost all of the humor in it was actually funny. Tales of Phantasia has four hilarious scenes I can think of: In the cabin of the boat where everyone's getting drunk and Arche is dreaming about "intimacy" with Cless (Silverlance mentioned that one), on the deck of the same boat where Klarth asks Cless which of the female party members he'd rather get it on with ("Mint has that quiet elegance about her, but I be Arche ****s like a tiger!"), and the bath house scene, which you have to see to believe.
Then there's Earthbound, which is more full of bizarre humor than any other game I've ever played. From the world-travelling photographer that calls "fuzzy pickles", the strange Mr. Saturn race (BoiNG!), and the insane dialogue (the quote in my sig is one of the more funny and less weird lines from the movie) make this game wacky in every sense of the word. And of course, everyone likes the FF IX catchphrase: "Ooh, soft." Edit Another one of my personal favorites, whenever you're about to start a new exploration quest in Skies of Arcadia, you see a mock-hand-drawn scene of Aika's overactive imagination as to what's going to happen there (trust me, it's f---ing hilarious, everyone here absolutely needs to play that game). Some more SoA goodness, in the GC Legends edition of that game, two of the extra bosses are quite funny in their way. The Ixa'ness Demons are three teenage girls who hit on Vyse and call Aika and Fina "hags", and Daikokuya is an old man that also hits on Vyse, in a somewhat more disturbing manner. Quote ...such as FF8's eat command... Ah how could I forget that? I just loved that command when I first tried it, just seeing Selphie run up to a monster and just before anything happens....A Flowery Meadow with "Please Wait...." on the bottom screen scrolling as the sounds of chomping and pain is heard. Classic. -------------------- |

Contrary to Silverlance, I love it when those little funny details are put in, as long as it's in the right context. Yes, when it's supposed to be tense or dramatic, humor ruins it, but Square, Konami, Valve, and a few of my other favorite developers usually do it right. It's especially hard to do right in FPS games, since you can't make jokes while the lead is flying, and going too long without fighting is boring.
Anyway, the antics of Lamarr the headcrab in HL2 amused me, not especially funny, but an example of a well-placed joke. Orthopedic underwear in FFVII was another, the whole Nibelheim flashback was too serious for me. And Squall's thoughts in FFVIII are usually so great, since they are usually the exact opposite of what is actually going on. And the running cardboard box gag in MGS is classic. -------------------- |

The New-Age Retro Hippies in EarthBound are classic. Then again, they're nothing compared to most of the other funny and screwed-up things in that game.
In FFIV, the "sexy dancer" in Fabul who turns out to be a burly male monk in drag, making Cecil jump back and scream in disgust. All the harassment Donfan suffers in Bahamut Lagoon, including being turned into a bunny. Like he doesn't deserve it... Everything dealing with Booster in Super Mario RPG, 'specially when it came to the cake. In FFIX, when Eiko's eavesdropping on what Zidane's saying to Vivi, thinking he's gonna give him some gem of wisdom. Instead, they end up taking a leak off the side of the ruins. Yes, potty-humor amuses me muchly... -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. If anything simply cannot go wrong, it will anyway. In FFVII, Cid was always good for a laugh with his random, uncalled for cursing. Such as:
"Shut up! Sit down and drink your @#$* tea!" And what else was there? Oh, I was mildly amused the first time the Fat Chocobo waylaid a party in FFVII too. Hrm... Barrett sending what's his name barrelling into the camera in the Avalanche secret room when he was all ticked at Cloud. I'll have to agree that the FFT Worker 8's Mustadio ass-kicking also was mildly amusing. In FFV when they finally discover Faris' true sexuality and Bartz and Gafgarion are all over the peep show lol. Damn pervs... Speaking of pervs, whenever you found the mage woman in Seiken Densetsu II in an inn and she was sleeping and tried to talk to her while she's quite clearly naked under them sheets, she would be quite displeased. And I have to also agree the Mario RPG was greatly amusing, especially the 8-bit curtain in Booster Tower. Lastly, Brother in Arms. The NPCs have some token lines, such as the bazooka pair. One has it shouldered, the other is loading. Loader loads it wrong and has to take it out and reload, thus slowing things down. All the while, the following is said: "Hurry up and get me loaded!" "Wait a minute!" " 'Wait a minute!?' What the do you mean 'Wait a f***ing minute!?' If you get me killed I swear I'm going to f***ing kill you!" Golden. That's all I recall offhand, but I remember a few others that were fairly good, though game-humour is generally poorly done. Usually the humour comes with what I and my friends make of it. -------------------- Games on the Go Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy: Four Warriors of Light Baldur's Gate Too much to play, so little time! heh, earthbound is legendary. The number of humourous lines in there are far too many to count, but I will name a few that spring to mind:
"AAAAAAAHhGGHH!!!!........I screamed because I didn't know what else to do." random npc in happy happy valley "Dinosaurs...Huge, aren't they? Well, that's all I've gotten out of my research!" -Mr. Spoon "Don't panic! It's just a...what?!...meteorite that...who?!...fell. I just wanna...what!?...go home!!" -Onett Cop "A meteorite has landed, the Sharks are running wild in town, you kids are wandering around, and, I'm hungry...I hate my job!" -Onett Cop as well as my sig, and the 3rd strongest moles...I can't believe it was made in Japan! -------------------- "Fire and steel follow me through the lands you will burn hordes of hell in the deadly raging flames of revenge" Rhapsody - Flames of Revenge |

In FFVI, Kefka started out almost as a comic relief.
"a-HEM. There's sand on my boots," he says when he's in the middle of the desert. And of course he calls Edgar a son-of-a-submariner. I can't believe anyone has said this yet, but that's probably because it wasn't meant to be funny-- "I GARLAND will knock you down!" from FF1. I always thought it was kinda funny when you find Santa Claus in Secret of Mana. -------------------- "It is a part of human nature to be evil, and it is a part of human nature to destroy evil, therefore, when evil is destroyed, so will be the human race..." - Atma |

Chrono Cross actually had some humorous moments, now that I think about it.

Some of the lines and scenes out of Tales of Symphonia (Best Game Ever!) are when Raine regualy slapped Genis (Seems like child abuse). The line from Genis "What an ass, he was grinning like an idiot the entire time". There are a few other funny lins as well.

I'll admit it. Ultros made me laugh out loud in FFVI. But only at one part.
When he writes the fake letter and Locke doesn't read it, I smiled. "Gaa! Come on! Read it!" Or something like that. It was rather unexpected. But then when he's up in the rafters with the weight that says "4TONS" on it. "This is heavier than I thought. It'll take me FIVE MINUTES to drop it." It was just such an obvious break of the fourth wall. I thought it was hilarious. -------------------- Some ghost of me might greet my son the day he is delivered. She's his older sister, so I don't think it counts as child abuse. It is mean, though. One of my favorite funny things was in Sword of Mana, when you go into that mansion. I thought many parts of FFV were hilarious, especially the aforementioned turtle-poking scene. A few other favourites include:
Butz in the castle library: "Pl... Play... Playb... I guess they don't have it." Dancing on stage: "Hey! You in front of the TV! You too!" Galuf, to Butz of Lenna at the start of the game: "Say what you want, but isn't the truth that you just want to go with the girl?" The scene with the rope when Butz and Cara are in the pit at the beginning of world three. The guy watching the dancers from near the stage: "I... I wasn't peeking!" FFIII's "Ouch! We fell into a pit! Shucks..." gets me every time, too. Edit Yargh! How could I forget? FFII had a fantastic moment with Light Warriors! Revive the pwer of the ORBS! Guy: Shut up. I just remembered, Brave Fencer Musashi. That entire game was full of farce. Ever so amusing, I must say.
And Breath of Fire III had its moments too. Rei and Teto, in their youth, were so amusing. I mean, I pair of vagabond theif kids - you know there're gonna' be antics galore. I know that everyone will be like wtf when i mention this but I LOVE the humour in Shadow Madness. The main character and work robot ALWAYS get into it and have arguments but they are always stopped by the female character that joins you at the beginning. SO muc hhumor in that game, I geuss thats why i play through it alot. I cant rmmeber any specific parts though... its been a while since ive played.
