Following the recent trend of releasing old Final Fantasy games (or, in this case, in releasing FF games that did not make it outside of Japan) Square Enix is now planning on releasing FFIII, which was first released in 1990 in Japan. The game will be on the Nintendo DS, and it's said that it will have the same quality as the FFI and II releases.

It is not yet known when it will be released, however, in either Japan or the rest of the world.

***

While I would like to play this game, I'd rather it not be coming out on a little handheld that I don't even own. Anyone else notice a trend with this? FF games for handhelds, and cell phones (like that one FFVII spinoff).

On a positive note, it's good to see previously unreleased games coming out on this side of the Pacific.

Finally they got their heads out of their asses. I think this game will be on high demand possibly, and IF I get a DS (Possibly) I'll defanetely get this game.

^ Sorta. It's Nintendo's newest (though not yet released) handheld that can dish out N64-like graphics and includes a touch screen. If I remember correctly, it'll also be backwards compatible with GBA games. So it isn't an improved version like the GBA SP; it's a whole new system.

Anyways, as I said before, if FFIIIj makes it to the western world then it's about damn time. Not only that, but the lineup of other games is looking pretty good in my opinion. Looks like I may finally be gettin' another handheld to keep my fossilized Game & Watches and original GameBoy company.

What more can I say than 'Yay!'? Well, this. I was sort of torn between 3 options - the DS, the PSP, or neither. I was sort of leaning towards the final option, but now I'll more than likely buy a DS. IIIj is a brilliant game, of far higher quality, atleast gameplay wise, than IV, VII, VIII, IX, X, I, and II, in my opinion. (And it is just my opinion.) I've been hoping for a good remake since I played and it for the first time, back in about January. It had some awesome music and, most notable, the job class system! I want to see some of those jobs, DS style.

It'll depend on price of the system for me, especially since I've never been a big fan of handhelds anyways. Most of the games suck and I'd rather be doing other things when I'm on the go. Besides, when I'm going places I tend to be the driver. Hard to play a handheld when you're trying to maneuver through traffic. It does sound like a nice system though, an EB sales associate told me all about it. biggrin.gif

I think I will buy it. However I haven't supported Nintendo for a while now, but this might do the trick for me.

Indeed you do, but I said Funking. Shame it's not on any system already out.
On the bright side since the DS is so far off, I can get it when DS is out and its out in theory.. PROVIDING they do the UK release. Now FF tactics and FF 13 with an AK47 please. biggrin.gif

Oh sweet!

I've been looking forward to this. FF3j was the best RPG ever produced on the NES, IMHO, yet it took what, a good 15-20 years before Square worked up the balls to release it to us?

This is going to be greeeat... biggrin.gif

Edit: I wonder if they'll consider rereleasing their earlier games. >:) Y'know, pre-FF.

It's great new to be sure, but it kinda bugs me that FF3 might (as in probably would ) be my only reason for buying the new DS. While part of me is excited about finally having an oppurtunity to finish FF's 1-10, another part of me is saying, "Can't they at least put it on a bloody home system?"

I must disagree.

But I assume by doing so that I'm going to be the minority...

I have roughly 2 hours/week that I can spend playing games at home. I have about 1 or 2 hours a day that I spend doing nothing either on break at work or somewhere else waiting for something. I would LOVE to have all the FFs on a portable system so that I could actually have time to play them.

this is what happens when you become an adult I suppose though.

A simple PS1 release woulda' been nice... it's kinda' a stab in the throat to all those PS owners that have followed the series on Sony systems. It leaves a rather nasty hole in my PS game shelf between FF Origins and FF Anthology.

About Time, but they really should have released it for GBA as well(Should I pay 150$ for a DS just to play 1 game, maybe). But it is about time.

Man Square Enix is such a jerk. Why make ff games for handhelds? Why not just make FFIIIj and Mystic Quest remakes for the PSone?... This is so lame..
Square Enix is just trying to snatch peoples' money.

If you guys buy the handheld and the game for it, FFIIIj, you're a sucker. Because you can already download the rom of the original japanese version and the Nes Emulator.. Sorry if I made you mad, but these guys just like to get money.

I'm definetly not buying.. Even if it will have better graphics and sound. I don't really care. I'll beat FF Mystic Quest for the SNES and then challenge FFIII again (But still I was in the early parts eh.gif ).

woohoo, i can't wait until thise comes out!
LockewithCeles, I disagree. Of course squenix are trying to get money, they're a company. I don't see what the difference is between making it for gameboy DS, or whether they made it for psone, except that many people already own a psone. I personally think that the gameboy, any version of it, is a perfect medium for a re-release. They can upgrade the graphics a bit, but it will still have the same gameplay. Plus, you can play it wherever, without needing to have a huge TV, and two things plugged into an outlet..

Agreed. Plus, I'm not getting a DS solely for FFIII, and I doubt anyone else is...without at least buying another game sometime down the road. I haven't owned a 'current' handheld in years, so I'm excited about the system itself and a boatload of its upcoming games. I also don't think it matters what system Square releases the game on; either way they're still after peoples' money, there's no denying that. They certainly aren't a charity.

Besides, I've played through FFIIIj multiple times on an emulator as well as several other ROMs, and I just don't think that compares to owning the actual game(s). I'm not extremely fond of playing games on the computer, so any alternative is great in my opinion.

While I agree that a PS release would have been nice and consistent, and that buying the system just for this one game is kinda dumb...
I don't completely disagree with Square doing it for two reasons...

I'm going to buy one anyway because there are several other games for it that I'd like to try(not the least of which is the next FFCC).

They are in it to make money and are attempting to keep up with technology. While PS games ARE still supported, they are not produced by most manufacturers, so why should Squenix be the only one?

I won't bother buying a DS simply because handheld Emulators come out so quickly. tongue.gif As with the GBA I'll just leach the game off a ROM for free and steal Nintendo's money.

When I got FFTA for GBA I really liked it but the one problem is batteries of course. It took me about 60 hours to complete the game (including the corrupt judge missions after you get all 300 missions) and I went through a hell of alot of batteries for that. Now GBA does not have an AC adaptor (at least the one I have) and I am not sure DS does but I don't feel like spending more money on batteries then on the game itself.

No worries, BGrugby.

I have a DS and it's 100% rechargeable. Just plug in the system and it recharges overnight. I have been a LOT richer since the SP came out, since I no longer needed batteries.

I have to buy a DS now, in addition to a PSP? Even at the exchance discount, they are pricey little things. We don't get paid so well, ya know.
Anyway, looking forward to yet another horizon to be broadened.

With the current game selection for the PSP, any exciting DS game would be good right now. I wasn't going to buy any new system before the announcement, and I doubt I'll do it now, but it's still nice to see FF3j come 'round the bend.

You could just get it on emulator.

It's cheaper, too.

Just got a DS myself and I cannot wait for FFIII to come out. Especially with the map being on the touch screen which makes it easier instead of hitting select+B to bring it up.

Eww... poopy DS... It stinks! I have the emulator already and the only worthwhile games are the Metroid demo and Super Mario 64 DS. Apparently, Pokemon Dash is a horrible game... Still, I'll get the mods for FFIII and Crystal Chronicles...
