For Question #2, see the topic on Cursed Ring.
For question #1, I don't know... are you asking what does it look like or from which mythology/legend does he come? As for Veteran, he's a monster.
Go check the CoN database for him : he's in there. |

But speaking of that...why the name "veteran"? Possibly a former member of the Imperial Army who later sided with Kefka?

I always figured that the "large one-eyed flying ball" was common in most RPG's, making it a Veteran.

Veteran was what it was called in the earlier FF games but it was changed to ahriman in the later games. As to why it was named veteran, i have no idea... Since some things in FF6 were mistranslated and the name was changed to ahriman in the later games, my guess would be that it was a mistranslation, but i may be wrong...

You can find them in Kefka's Tower. I know that they are in the Golden Dragons room for sure, but think they are other places in the tower although I can't remember off hand.

You're probably right, considering the following: Atma Weapon instead of Ultima Weapon Pugs instead of Tonberry Enhancer instead of Enchanter, etc. This post has been edited by Stryker on 1st September 2004 19:35 |

Atma Weapon: "Atman" is the Hindu word for the soul or eternal essence. Since the strength of the weapon is determined by your vitality, or essence, the name makes sense.

In FF6j, Veteran was indeed called Ahriman.
And also Atma was Ultima in Japan, there is a joke about the mistrans in X2; "Just don't call him Atma". Infact this shows that FF6 got almost no names right. ![]() This post has been edited by Mu the Squirrel on 1st September 2004 21:13 -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

I'd be careful about calling this a 'mistranslation'. Ted Woolsey was very....liberal, yes. I personally bash him any chance I get, and if you offer me one at 4 o' clock in the morning I'm still bashing him. However, he didn't perform nearly as bad as that freakshow of a translator they let loose on FF V as it appears in Anthology. Now there's a MIStranslation all around.
Anyway, there's wasn't an official American name for Tonberry, so he made it Pug. He wasn't allowed to use words like 'Holy' or 'Death', so he turned it into 'Pearl' and 'Doom'. 'Ultima Weapon' wasn't going to fit and when put into Japanese and taken from it again it sounds like Atma. (which is a strategy supposedly used on Merton/Meltdown and Ragnarok/Laguna as well). -------------------- |

Holy and Death, hehe. American censorship was hella' out of control back then. Well, at least it's getting better.

I think using Pearl instead of Holy and Doom instead of Death added a nice touch of character to the game. "Holy" and "Death" by themselves are over-rated.

I don't really like pearl, not to say that Holy is a million times better, but pearl just didn't do it for me. Doom, I do like better than Death.
SuperManBoy, I like your "floating-eyeballs are veterans, hence the name veteran" theory. |

This doesn't really have anything to do with the topic, but our Theology teacher (I go to a Catholic high school) was talking about "eyes of faith" and drew a winged eye. XD
Moderator Edit I just don't understand why people know their comment has nothing to do with the topic but yet they post it anyway. -R51 This post has been edited by Rangers51 on 2nd September 2004 11:26 |

That had everything to do with the topic, he was describing the Veteran. He just didn't feel it had enough to do with it I suppose. Never heard of the "Eye of Faith" before though...

The reason I didn't think my post had to do with the topic was because he asked what a veteran was, and I felt that it was more of an interesting coincidence.
