I heard something about why hurricane season was so bad this year.

They showed this area in the Atlantic that is sort of a High-Pressure pocket, and when hurricanes come through, they usually get sucked toward it, and get sent flying north, barely grazing the coast (the only comparison I can think to make is an asteroid not in an orbit passing by a planet or star)
Well, this year, the pocket was apparently alot larger than normal, part of it actually being on land. So, as the hurricanes were slung around it, they trampled over land, instead of water like they usually are.

I guess the question then is why did it become so large? Was it due to environmental changes brought on by man, natural cycles in the planetary weather, or something else?

It is certainly a very bad year for hurricanes and I hope that you will all safely see any more of these through. Preferably with little to no damage to your homes.

Well, Ivan sure turned out interesting here. A brand new grocery store about five minutes from my house caved in, and several of the surrounding stores had their fronts torn off. The whole place has been condemned because of it, which kinda sucks. A bit of the roof on the left side of my house went missing as well, but it's nothing too bad. There was, however, a very large tree lieing across the driveway yesterday morning; just this much more to the right and it would've completely crushed the back end of my car. Unfortunately a friend of mine DID lose her vehicle. Her driveway ended up a flooded mess with water and mud reaching up past the windows of her car. I don't know much about the inner workings of cars, but I'm sure based on its age and the damage there's no saving it. Eh...it was about time she needed a new one anyways...

Last I checked (yesterday) most of the surrounding counties were out of water and power, but luckily I don't have to deal with that this time. The power was steadily out three of four hours at most when it wasn't flickering on and off. I don't think anyone was hurt unless there were more people walking up around the waterfalls during the storm like a few did during Frances. There were two casualties then, but I blame that more on ignorance than the hurricane.

Norway is in Europe, correct? Saying that it came to Norway is a bit...well...odd. I would've thought it died up near New York. huh.gif

That is what I said. The rest of it. it was only very windy and much rain I told you!

Well, Silverfork, I know you're in NC like me... so I'm sure you've heard of what happened in Peek's Creek, right here in my hometown of Franklin, NC.

A 24 y/o woman that I went to HS with had to have her leg amputeted from being pinned by debris from a mudslide. She was pregnant at 5 months, and lost the baby. She also lost her mother-in-law and her 3 year old son in the mudslide.

The mudslide was caused by a tornado that tore through the small mountain community. It caused a cloudburst, which literally shaved off part of the mountain and sent it screaming down into the neighborhood.

There was no way at ALL to predict the events that occured. The community prepared for flooding, but that's all that was expected and predicted. The tornado and cloudburst happened at 10:10pm on Thursday night, so no one was even able to adequately react to it, let alone prepare. Most of the neighborhood was caught in the mudslide while trying to escape the destruction. At the bottom of the post is a link to the damage done here.

It couldn't have been anything we did. The growth would have been more gradual than the pocket doubling in diameter in a single year.

It appears to be just one of those freak things that (probably) happens every several decades or so

Yeah, I heard about that, Hamedo. It's awful. sad.gif

What I described is what happened in the Asheville area. There were multiple mudslides in addition to the flooding, but nothing quite like what happened where you live. I hope there was no serious damage done to your home.

It's all good here, Silverfork. Thanks for the concern. smile.gif

My yard had some branches in it, but nothing happened to the driveway or the house or my jeep.

I heard there were some hellacious mudslides on I-40 towards the Asheville direction.... haven't checked them out myself, though. I'm just glad Ivan is GONE.

Bad news, though.... according to the "experts", we are in the beginning of a 30-year storm cycle. Supposedly, this whole hurricane after hurricane BS will continue every summer for 30 years or something. God, I hope they're wrong....

If that actually does happen, I wonder how many people will move out of state to avoid that?

In this 30-year-span, I would hope the US could find some means of coping. I also heard about this, but on a much smaller scale: 10-15 years.

That's awful, Hamedo. I know how it feels to lose a loved one, but losing my mother and son...wow, that would be heartbreaking. sad.gif Best wishes to that family.

Well, it seems Jeane will swurve out of the way, cuurently. Karl follows, though. dry.gif Florida is going to have to figure out something because they are being pounded on both sides of the state, losing money in the process. I heard Bush was going to send financial aide to his brother, Governor of Florida. We're talking billions of dollars in damage and repair.pinch.gif All I can say is that I hope the meteorologists were wrong about their prediction.

One question. The mother who lost her child, mother-in-law and her unborn baby... Seeing as she had an unborn child, does she still have a husband? After all that horrible loss, I would hope that there was someone like that who could be there for her.

Yeah, she's married to another guy I went to school with named Ryan. He's a volunteer firefighter, and when the mudslide came he wasn't there, because he was out helping rescue crews elsewhere.

Understand, though, that Peek's Creek is literally a tiny, 5 foot wide, MAYBE two feet deep creek. It runs through this quiet little community, and has never, EVER flooded before. If wouldn't have during Ivan, if not for the tornado and cloudburst, which caused half the mountain the creek flowed down from to slide off towards the town. I seriously doubt Ryan would have left Christie if he thought they were in any danger.

He's been to Mission St. Joseph's in Asheville with her constantly since this happened. From what I've heard from family, he is torn with guilt. All the "what if's" and "I should have been there's" going through his mind... He lost his mom, a toddler, an unborn chils, and his wife (who is only 23) is now an amputee. Both of them are going through more than I think most folks could stand. All told, it's one of the worst, if not the worst, hurricane stories I've heard.

They torn up the roads pretty bad from what I've seen. I haven't been that way since Saturday, but you can imagine what kind of hell doing so was/is. Good to hear you got through Ivan unscathed.

That's just horrible about that family though. I can't imagine what it must be like to lose so many people close to you in just a matter of minutes. That's just...I don't have the words.

My mom had her right leg amputated above the knee back in '94 after a car accident, so I know how difficult it's gonna be for that woman's husband in regards to that and helping her out. It's tough, but in addition to the loses they've suffered, man. sad.gif

They have my condolences.

Ivan reverted back to a triopical storm and is heading back towards Louisiana and Texas. Strange. Would it be possible for Jeanne and Ivan to clash and form another Perfect Storm?

It seems Lisa is on her way, also. Haven't heard much about her - just catching tidbits of information from others.

Crap. Jeanne originally swerved away, but then decided to loop back around. So far, it looks like she's going to be a more direct hit to my area than Frances was.

These things are seriously out to get us. Jeanne circled around to go back towards us. Hurricanes just don't do that. It defies the Laws of whatever hurricanes follow.

I was out of power for 7 days this time. It came back Saturday afternoon. The well pump got its wires fried (possibly not from the hurricane - we're not sure). It was replaced late Sunday evening (those guys really work late). You'd think I'd miss electricity most, but it's running water that you really miss.
My ceiling got a bit wet. The wind drove the rain into the ridge vents, and there were wet spots, but only where electric wires go to the ceiling fans. An insurance guy is supposed to come out to see if mold or mildew is gonna start growing.
There were 5 shingles in the yard, but we only lost one.
The trampoline we left tethered to a tree got completely torn apart.
The roads were completely flooded on the way back. On one of them, I could feel through the floorboard the water splashing against the bottom of my car.
I had some neighbors that got hit real bad. The woman who lives across the street from me had water come into her house (no flooding, just a little seepage). She didn't come back until several days later, so her carpet grew stuff and some of her furniture got water damage.
Someone down the street has all of his drywall out for the garbage men to pick up.
All the street lights I saw are back now.

It's like the end of the world. Hurricane barrage coupled with Mount St. Helens erupting again.

I don't know what happened to Karl. It probably just died. The last I heard of Lisa, it was shooting out to the Atlantic.
I heard there's supposed to be three more in October. They'll probably be weak ones, though.
