As earlier mentioned by Elena, Final Fantasy I + II Advance is slated for release later this month in Japan.
Aside from a convenient new "save anywhere" function in FFI and extensive graphical and audio overhauls in both games, each title will feature new items, story elements and dungeons unique to the GBA release. Final Fantasy I will include a new dungeon accessible at the end of the game, where players will be able to begin the "Soul of Chaos" quest. To complete this quest, players will be required to defeat, in sequence, more powerful versions of the game's four fiends: Lich, Marilith, Kraken, and Tiamat. And during the quest, bosses from Final Fantasy III(j) through VI(j) will appear in battle, including FFIV's Four Fiends, FFV's Gilgamesh, and FFVI's Chupon. Additionally, a span of new items will be available, including an Ultima Weapon sword and full set of Crystal armor. Final Fantasy II will include an extra chapter in the game's story, entitled "Soul of Rebirth." During this chapter, players will follow the activities of a new party composed entirely of assisting characters from the original game: Ming Wu, Scott, Joseph, Richard, and Cid. Enemies during this segment of the game will be equipped with powerful new spells, and will include a new boss named Ultima Weapon. Final Fantasy I + II Advance's July 27 release date is still tentative, as Square Enix has already pushed back the release once (from it's original schedule of July 15) due to a coding glitch. The game is set to retail for 6,090 yen ($55-58). *** Though it's nice to see some classics getting deserved attention, and the new features sound like fun, Square Enix seems to be pushing the early Final Fantasy titles a little far--along with this upcoming GBA release, official releases have recently been made for the PSX (Final Fantasy Origins), the Wonderswan Color, and even newer Japanese cell phone models using the NTT DoCoMo service. |

I don't like the idea of the FFVI Fiends taking a back seat to the FF Fiends...You can't tell me Rubicant isn't cooler than Cary.

Most of those additions seem very unnecessary.
It's nice they're getting attention, as Phoenix said, but I'd still rather see a FFIII re-release. -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

The additions sound nice and all, but... It just makes me think of all the cool extra stuff in their rerelease of FFVI (movies, etc.) when they couldn't bother to fix the load time. I wonder how worthwhile this stuff will end up being.

I think it'll be fine. Personally, I still love FF1, but I already unlocked everything in Origins. It'd be nice to have some fresh stuff for the game. Plus the idea of using the original heroes of the series to fight the more exotic bosses later in the series is kinda neat. (even if Rubicant isn't as cool as Kary
![]() I am looking forward to FFII's Rebirth section, to play as the assist characters all together in a party. That'll be neat. I've yet to beat FFII anyway, and this'll give me further incentive to do so. I don't think the improvements will hinder the game at all, as far as loading times or anything else... it is on a catridge, after all. On the other hand, I do have to agree with everyone: I almost wonder what the point is. I would like FFIII to get its updated keester Stateside already, instead of being fed rehashed games. Personally, if they were gunna do something like this, I don't see why they couldn't have slapped FF1, 2, and 3, all with their own improvements and "added dungeons" and omake sections and whatnot, all in the FF Origins package in the first place. They still coulda fit it all on one disk, y'know. And when you think about it, it would have been the most fitting: FF1, 2, and 3 all featured the debutes of things that would become the staple of the series, each revolving around a crucial element. FF1 had the crystals, the Light Warriors, and Airships. FF2 had the character-centered epic storyline, Cid, and Chocobos. FF3 had the job system and summons. You can't really cover the "origins" of Final Fantasy as a whole without including all three. Now, while I really want to get FFI-II Advance for the extra stuff, I feel rather jipped, since I already have Origins. Origins has the FMV, Advance has the dungeons. Hmmm... choices... It'd be almost equivalent to buying all three versions of Soul Calibur II just to be able to play all three system-exclusive characters. Bah. I was gunna finally try and tackle FFII recently, but with this info coming out, I may as well just put it off, trade in Origins for Advance when it comes out, and get my fix that way. -------------------- And behold, I saw a Pale Gaming System, and the name of he who rode it was Squaresoft, and Enix followed him. |

It does seem a tad too elaborate... but oh well. Playing the dead FF2 characters sounds fun. I'm still not going to buy a GBA though.

I'm in with you guys who call for a III release as opposed to the remakes of I and II.
Granted, II hasn't gotten a lot of attention in the states, so it still has some "freshness" that FFI arguably doesn't. However, call me horribly biased, but I sincerely feel II is the worst game in the series, partially because of the overwhelmingly tedious method of leveling spells. (I say spells specifically because weapons actually get used often enough--and don't cost MP--that the leveling system works for them.) III, on the other hand, is an absolutely gorgeous game that *needs* official release in the states. The story perhaps isn't any more notable than that of I or II, but the complexity of the game (particularly the job system) is quite impressive for a Famicom title. |

I would also like to see FF3 rereleased. I can't say much that hasn't been said already, though I have to give FF2 credit, it did start a couple great FF traditions like the Cids and Chochoboes. -------------------- I fear my heart and fear my soul Life goes on, it surely will, Without me and I wonder: Will I ever see light again? Ejoty: Even if you're not going to buy a GBA, there's always a thing that starts with the letter "e" and uses things that are referred to by a certain three-letter abbreviation starting with the letter "R".
And for about the third to fifth time, I support an international re-release of FFIIIj. What a great game that was--the only NES FF that I bothered to play a significant portion of via NES emulator. Nevertheless, I'll be looking forward to this re-release. I think that they should've kept the old magic system in place, though, since it's different from how newer games use magic (see http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/forums/ipb/in...showtopic=4461) and lends these older games a certain flavor and strategic aspect. But the battle screens are MUCH better now. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! FF1 and 2 re-released sounds positively retarded... they took the PSX version, added 2 things, and slapped it into a GBA pack and market it...
