Hmm... >_>

Actually, Kappa isn't a character, just something you can make.  It's like this...if you get a character Impified, you can just put Imp's equipment on him/her and then change his/her name to Kappa.  Ta-da!  Kappa the Imp.  At least I think that's how it goes...I guess out of anyone I should know the best...but I don't?

The real Kappa is the Imp that comes into the game to teach you how to proceed. I forget what exactly he teaches, now. Something.

I don't know why they named him Kappa.

Or as Tiddles puts it "Imp the Imp"

Oh well, does it really matter what the Imp's name is?  And by the way, now I remember what R51 is talking about the teacher thing.  The first time I saw it I was like "What is Square smoking?"  Look at me now!

I'm almost certain that Kappa teaches you about learning Gau's Rages on the Veldt.  It's been a while, though, so I might be wrong.

*thwap* wrong! Sorry MorgueN, but kappa is actually japanese for Cucumber ^-^ Don't beleive me? Look up sushi, particularly Kappa Rolls. In english, it translates to cucumber rolls. Also, I'm pretty confident any translator will tell you the same.

And isn't Kappa a she? That's what I always thought. And there's a flower on her head.

Kappa teaches you Gau's rages, and doesn't it show you how to use the Collesum?

From RPGamer's RPGuru (http://www.rpgamer.com/ask/rpg101498.html):

FFVI had two "Imps" in it. The instructional Kappa & that damned Imp Robot you couldn't buy. The Imps in FFVI looked nothing like the imps in the previous five games. Also, because of the name "Kappa" alot of crap got stirred up about the origin of the Imp name, since in Japanese mythology there are little demon guys called Kappas, who wear hats that contain water, and if they lose that water they die. (Or something to that effect, but I'm not an expert on Japanese mythology, either. :p ) Although this really has nothing to do with the whereabouts of the Imp today, it's more of an interesting footnote in the history of the Final Fantasy Imp.

So Kappa doesn't exactly mean Imp, but it's a closeish reference to the "imps" in FF6.  Not so much Imp the Imp as Kappa the Kappa, then...

So you can turn characters into killer demonic cucumbers. Ah well can't be right all the time.

A she?  Please, Elena, I thought you would understand better!  Everyone knows that the flower atop my head is just another part of my delicious fashion sense!  Ba ha ha!!

But, yeah, Kappa Roll is a Cucumber Roll in Sushi.  But is there a connection?  Ponder, ponder...

Um... anyone actually read my post?  Kappa DOES mean a sort of water monster thing (as well as cucumber possibly), and the thing on its head is probably some kind of bowl...

Japanese is an interesting language. Sometimes words mean more then one thing (as with Chinese, and other languages). So it's possible that, depending on the context, Kappa could mean more then one thing. I'll go with Tiddles' explanation, as the context seems more relevant ^-^

Kappa: Oh of course, I should have taken that into account. My apologies.  :E

Well maybe it means cucumber and water monster...leading to those Sea Cucumber things!!  Yes, Square ran out of monster ideas so it used a lowly Sea Cucumber and turned it into an Imp!

And now for a second explanation that actually might make sense.  Now, I think we've all been missing the Imp part of the name.  If Kappa mean Cucumber, then it would be Green.  A Green Imp, which is what it is.  If Kappa meant some kind of Sea Monster, then it would be Sea-like colors, and maybe the flower is like a water plant or something, which is why Kappa looks the way he does. I think that either way, it makes sense.  Ta-da.

Kappa the Imp. Look at this way because I was wrong. This means your name is original. Don't ask me why it just is orginal.
