Question One: In the WoR, on the Veldt.... you get Gau to Leap, thus ending a battle. He learns all rages of all monsters fought up until you get him back, correct? So if he comes back and you attack him to keep him from joining the group, does he still keep learning Rages until you let him back in the party?
Question Two: If you have someone equipped with the Cursed Shield during this time on the Veldt, do you get credit for a battle fought towards the 255 total on the battles where Gau leaps to end the fight, or comes back at the end of the fight? I ask because when he comes back at the end of a fight, there are no exp. points or gold earned displayed. No and No.
Battles which end through Gau Leaping or returning do not add up anything to whatever variable at the end, meaning that the Cursed Shield doesn't get those battles counted. Also see: http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/forums/ipb/in...?showtopic=4304 -------------------- |

1) Correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC Gau only learns the rages of the monsters you fought in the battle that he first leaps and in the battle where he returns. Anything inbetween doesn't count.
2) ...this one I'm not sure about. I believe that in order for the battle to count, the battle has to be won. Thus, EXP and GP are handed out at the end. In the event that Gau leaps or returns, no EXP and GP are received, so the battle doesn't count as a loss, but it doesn't count as a win either - it's in the same category as running away, I suppose. But that's just my theory. Edit Djib beat me to it. Whoops. This post has been edited by LadyRed on 26th July 2004 18:25 |

Thanks to both of you for the quick answers. I really appreciate it! I've heard the Veldt was the best place to break the curse on the shield, but I figured I could kill two birds with one stone and get Gau's rages at the same time. Apparently not. *sigh* At least I know now.

I heard that the "auto-death" peepers on the island you start in are the fastest. Personally, I just equip it and forget it. Go about my quests until I randomly find the best shield in the game after a fight!! "Hurray pally shield!!"

As I posted in the "Dumb Mistakes" topic, do not equip the Cursed Shield on Gogo.
The game has a bug and it will never convert the Cursed shield to the Paladin shield if you have it equipped on Gogo. Maybe everyone already knew this dirty secret, but I sure didn't. ![]() |

I wouldn't call it a bug. It most likely relates to Gogo not being able to learn Magic, Lores, etc. It'd say that the game prohibits Gogo from changing variables like that period and the Cursed Shield's battle check is on the receiving end of that.
It's not so much a bug as an illogical feature of Gogo. -------------------- |

Quote (Djibriel @ 26th July 2004 17:22) It's not so much a bug as an illogical feature of Gogo. And an all-around pain in the ass. On my first playthrough I thought I'd gotten down to half-way uncursed until I decided to check out the Tze Jo Cursed Shield Guide on GameFAQs and found out that Gogo can't uncurse the shield. ![]() Personally, I like taking some time away from the plot-based ass-kicking to uncurse the shield. That way, instead of getting people to learn Ultima much later in the game (by Fanatics'/Kefka's tower), they're starting to learn it maybe halfway through (right after picking up Locke). And the auto-death Peepers are a great way to uncurse the shield, especially if you're playing on an emulator running in turbo mode. No muss, no fuss. =) |

There's a nice way to get your Cursed Shield-wearer to work in your favor. First off, equip a Pod Bracelet (in case of Strago) or Memento Ring (in case of Relm). This prevents from the Count status eventually offing your character.
Next, give the person who equips the Cursed Shield the Heal Rod. Now, you've got a fully automatic character who will use the Heal Rod on *your* party. Equip the Offering for improved results. This strategy is called Whirling Relm/Strago at GameFAQs, so might as well call him that here. -------------------- |

If you put a ribbon on the member with the cursed shield equipped it will dispel everything exept the condemn, but it never takes that long to win a battle.
