Duane and Katarin are only 17. The other kids can't be over 9. Cyan and Shadow are older, I know that Cyan is 51 by the end. Those children have to grow up without parents. Then again it would be terrible to lose your wife and child. I don't see how he lived through that. So I can sort of see your side of it.

You can't tell me that anything is more personally heart wrenching than watching Cyan pull his dead son's cold body out of that bed. The fact that everyone else who was ever important to Cyan died that same day -- the Phantom Train -- the living nightmares in the WOR -- that's just icing on the tragic, tragic cake.

As far as saddest heroics, that goes to Leo, hands down. He was noble to the very end, and inspired all the other characters, especially Terra.

As far as saddest backstory, I never really caught this nuance until this last time playing it through, but don't you feel bad for Kefka? If they hadn't used him as a human guinea pig, he could possibly have been a pretty decent general, like Celes. (Who, though I love her to pieces, is a wee bit shady at times, though generally a good character.)

Edit: And you can't forget Cid. He spent a year watching an entire village of survivors kill themselves one by one, while the mobs outside were dropping like flies. The entire time, he's caring for a comatose girl that could also die at any time. And then his health is compromised. What kept the poor guy going? And why doesn't he let you take him off the darn island once you return with your airship?!

Despite the fact that Celes is a genetically engineered mutant, forced to work for the empire, framed as a traitor, is supported by Locke who fails to believe her on her death bed
despite the fact that Lock was saved from his own death by the expense of his only love's memory and life, and then found Celes, who may have betrayed him...

The award goes to Terra who dies without love, or Cyan whose life is ruined by the death of love.

Cyan's story would have to be the saddest, based on what I've experienced. It's hard to cope with losing one person that you love in a year, so I can't imagine having to deal with losing your immediate family and having those you serve/serve with die within a short amount of time. It's so unfortunate, which is why I see so many people putting it down as their answer.

Everyone had their own sad moments and pasts, but I think to have your whole country crumble is just horrible.

(Um, Locke=Amazing, Terra died without love? Celes was disbelieved on her deathbed? Er, did you happen upon a special version of the game?)

For me it was Lockes scenario.

to have someone that is perfect for you (she liked to adventure as Locked did) suddenly forget you is so sad. Then Locke can't even go near her again to try and remind her that she likes Lock
