add an offering and enjoy (but be careful...there is another thread with a post that warns that while you do steal 8 times...you will only actually recieve the first item and in that case every item stolen after is voided from the fight since it's already been stolen)
works well for stealing against high level enemies that are alone, but makes it so that you can't capture and lose locke as a damaging character and yes, i love locke to pieces...mostly because his steal function is so useful in getting hard to get items early (and late) in the game -------------------- The more people i meet...the more i want to be a penguin |

i like using locke and celes throughout the whole game. celes i have learn all the spells and level up with magic boosting espers while locke i forget about magic and just beef up with bismark the whole game. then i grab illumina and atma weapon and voila those two are unstoppable. by the end i have maxed out locke's strength and celes' magic at 128 a piece.
besides both those characters are so cool. im not sure which i like more |

I don't like to think of any character as the best cause each character has it's niche to fill and can be extremely useful if used correctly
i always teach everybody every spell (or close to it) and i usually prefer to use the espers for an hp boast earlier in the game...after that i just take it for granted that by equiping various espers that would be useful, the various bonuses make my characters well rounded If you work at making a powerhouse group then you'll have more trouble at the end since you have to split up the parties -------------------- The more people i meet...the more i want to be a penguin |

Locke doesn't really have anything to offer that makes him better than all other characters unless you get great joy out of using steal/capture. You can beef up any character you want but it doesn't make him/her the best. I think the best way of determining a character's usefulness in comparison to others is to look at how powerful each one is throughout the game. Some characters start out weak and then have the potential to be strong later on. Others are powerhouses right from the beginning. In that regard I think it's safe to say that the top 3 characters are Sabin, Edgar and Gau. I don't want to start a big discussion about which character is best in this thread other than to point out that from an objective perspective it's probably not Locke (in our best attempts at achieving objective truth on the matter).

I always used Celes and Shadow the most. They just seem to be the most useful.

This is not about who you like, guys, it's about whether or not you like Locke.
I personally say that no, Locke is not the best character, for a few reasons (they're all only IMO, so please don't get offended). 1. Locke's character didn't really stand out as unique. 2. He doesn't seem like a thief, or a treasure hunter for that matter. All he steals is stuff from enemies, and the only treasure he hunts IIRC is the Phoenix Esper. 3. I know someone (not someone from CoN, someone from my school) who's favorite FF character is Locke, and I don't really like the guy's opinions (or him) that much, so you might say I'm a little spoiled against Locke. 4. Locke doesn't seem like the "hero" type. 5. His commands are fairly useless, and his attack is weak. I do give him the credit for the only FF character who's story brought me very close to crying. give locke credit. He lost his girl in a treasure hunt too (which was shown in the game). As for relating locke to a guy you dislike, im sorry that you mix the two up, the guy from school must be a real jerk to make you think about him while playing video games. As far as being a hero, he and the moogles save terra at the beginning, he saves celes from the wrath of the empire, goes through hell and high water to find pheonix to try and save his girl, and helps save the world as well. That's pretty heroic, in fact he's possibly the character who takes the roll of hero most. As far as his commands being useless, you need to steal more and find out just how many cool things you can pick up early as well as only through stealing. And finally his attacks are only weak if you don't equip him right. Early in the game i equiped him with two air lancets and he was my most damaging character (even with edgar and his tools).

I would say Locke is far from the best character in the game, though he has earned a special place in my heart due to his steal command.
How else can you finish the game with as many genji gloves as you want? For those of you who don't know this little tidbit of information: on the Floating Continent, there is a pretty rare random battle creature named "Dragon." Now, stealing from this creature will, from time to time, yield a GENJI GLOVE! If you have the patience, you can amass quite the stash. Of course, if you are feeling cheap, you can always savestate every time you get in a fight with one to ensure that you end up with a genji glove and not an elixir, but what fun is that? -------------------- Je ne t'aime plus, Mon amour... Locke is a kind of unconventional hero. He's not the knightly male strong-physical-attacker hero like Cecil of FFIV; he's not the "unknown-potential" kind of hero that Terra or Mega Man X is either. In some ways, he's a kind of opposite of that, desperately (unconsciously, of course) wanting to become the kind of chivalrous, strong, manly, Cecil-like hero. He had a girlfriend whom he failed to save (twice, even) in times of trouble (as opposed to the traditional "hero" who always saves the damsel in distress). Unlike the usual hero, he also doesn't possess a powerful physical attack. In a way, you can say that he's also not that "manly" but is rather "cowardly" because his main occupation is

Locke is always one of my stronger characters as well. I equip him with the thief glove and the genji glove, and then two wing edges. This way, he can stand in the back row and obtain little damage while still kicking ass! He can capture twice (so he hits an enemy twice with a whole lot of damage) and on top of that, he can steal very useful items.
As far as his personality? Maybe it's because I'm a girl and have a thing for the "prettier" video game boys, but I adore him. He comes off as somewhat of a bumbling idiot sometimes, but that's just part of what makes him charming. He always tries to do what's best for everyone else. -------------------- |

Hmmm... When it comes to Locke's fighting capabilites, I really wasn't fond of him, he wasn't really the strongest, at magic or attack, and unfortunately, I really was kinda put off by steal since for some reason, I was woefully unsuccessful with it. However, I found myself putting him in my party often, just so I wouldn't miss a minute of his story. I loved his personality, he made me laugh, cry, and think. He was alot of fun to play for me.

i agree as you can see locke is my fave just by my screen name, but i like locke for several reason, first there are items i would have never know about getting if it werent for locke. I also love his story line, locke useally is my best char since he is my fave i never have a party unless i can help it with out him, he is the only way to get the pheinox wich is probly the most handy esper ever next to kirin. The main reason i like him though is because he's not some pretty boy like edgar or cyan who have had everything given to them on a silver platter locke has had to endure much just to get the smallest thing, and when he finally got his treasure it was only like for a mintue befor he lost it agin. Locke has also struck me as the most loyal of the group too cause he is the one who is always putting himself aside to save everyone els.

I am a big Locke fan,
He is always in my party when I can. I like to give him the Illumina and the Paladin Shield, His thieving *** rarely gets killed. I would say that his ability is the most unique, "That's TREASURE HUNTER!!" How could you not love how he does speak? Locke is not only the best character in the game but in the entire FF series no contest. Best story, best lines, best sprites, etc.

No, I don't think so. He's a good character, maybe even a great character, but the best? Not in my opinion. As far as combat goes, his steal isn't generally useful and his attack, defense, and magic are all mediocre. As far as story goes, yeah, he's got this tragic past, waah waah waah. It's all okay, but the best? No. Sorry.

Thats just your opinion..... which I would have to agree with. Of course he is. He can steal. Plus he is just Locke my favoirte character. Even though you can use Gogo to steal too, Locke is still better to me. Plus his rol in the story was very entertaining.

I think he is the best character cause when i use him all the attacks made on him miss and he does 6000 damage and more to an enemy.
