Back in '96, the Olympics were here in Atlanta, so I naturally was excited about them. We went to a few events (baseball and soccer), and you really couldn't miss the excitement in the whole of Georgia. Since then, though, I haven't really cared about them all that much. It's something I hear about every once in a while, and there's certainly enough about them in commercials, but it's not something that I'll watch unless someone else has it on.

I always root for Russia and Ukraine because they kick royal ass in Gymnastics, and my mother's side of the family is from Ukraine.

My Olympics experience started with watching the winter games as a little kid and lovin' the hell out of the sled races. Now I almost exclusively care about the Gymnastics, since that's the sport I did for a while. I can't wait to see USA, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, and China compete.

The olympics have really lost their luster, for me at least. I enjoy watching the Winter Games better, anyway. But someone tell me why their held every four years? I mean, what do the swimmers, fencers, and gymnasts do in their spare time? Can you honestly make a living off of olympic swimming?... I've taken more of a shine to the X-Games. It's like the olympics of extreme sports. At least you can watch that every year (in fact, twice a year, winter and summer)

The one thing that I will add to this though is that Micheal Phelps has already had the most national media for a swimmer than any other person in that profession. Analysts began hyping him up to say that he'll break Mark Spitz's record of 7 golds. He's competing in 8. He's already one his first one. But what happens if Phelps doesn't get 8 ... or 7 ... or 5 even? Then he wouldn't have lived up to the hype. I don't know jack about swimming, but after watching ESPN the past month, I now expect this guy to get 8 medals... anything less would not be successful. That's why media destroys an athlete, because when they fail, they get hit harder because of expectations. I have every bit of confidence that he'll win a couple more gold medals, but to beat every player in the world 8 times is asking for a lot.

Oh, and the college team that they call the US Basketball team will, at most, get bronze. I watched a couple of the exhibition games and they have no chemistry whatsoever together. The only real chemistry I see is when LeBron James and Carlos Boozer were on the floor together, and that was because they were both on the same NBA team last year. They'll get whacked by the Slovs again.
Woman's basketball team, on the other hand, is fully capable of claiming gold. Just give the ball to Tarausi.
I'll probably watch the basketball games during the olympics, but that's it really.

I'm rooting for Ukraine, since my sister lives there, and US, home country. It's been pretty fun watching it so far, it's the first year I've watched so many events. But my parents keep going online, finding out the winners, and spoiling it, so I'm getting annoyed.

Go Canada!

I've only had a chance to watch a bit so far, like part of the opening ceremony (I got called away during the drum-off, where one guy was in the water, and the other was on land).

I saw two Canadians score decently in the gymnastics section too (mens) and that's it. From a magazine article I read, Canada is expected to do well. Of course, that was a Canadian magazine. ^-^

Same here for France. We can expect some medals in fencing from what I heard, and maybe handball. Possibly some in athletism.

Anyway, I don't really care that much, since only a few sports displayed are of some interest to me...

I'm rooting for a different country depending on the event. Swimming, gotta go with the US, soccer is Greece all the way, ping pong is definitely Japan or China...whichever's player decides to use the penhold grip (my personal favorite), and for other events I favor other countries. I like the summer Olympics much more than the Winter, just because of the variety of the events. I don't know how many people here watched the ping pong yesterday...US vs. Korea women's, and US vs. Chile men's. It was amazing! They also had Badminton and they have Handball on tonight. You wouldn't think they would have Olympic handball or ping pong, but really I think they are the most entertaining events (it's a good thing they brought ping pong back into the Olymipcs from a 4-year....i think...slump).

Yeah this'll sound strange, but I want the Iraqis' scoccer team to do good this year. You know, after all the team had been through with the abuse and torture if they lost, now they can focus on doing their best, knowing that a beating won't nessicarly follow it. So far their lineup is good and they beat the Saudi's to qualify. I hope that they get close to winning even if they don't make it. It could be uplifing for their people to know that the world is once again open to Iraq.

yes as a matter of fact you can, you know phelps' name, you know what he looks like, and you will almost certianly see him on TV eating wheaties. Endorsements make olympians rich.

And i can tell you are all really excited that the US might win gold in waterpolo this year, or not, either way it should be some fierce games, hungary has dominated waterpolo for a long time, along with Russia and Croatia, but with Wolf Wigo, Tony Azevedo, Omar Amr in the pool USA may stand a chance. . .

I liked the opening cerimonies. They were a little strange, but I liked the flaming rings and the Centaur. I didn't like the little frolicing couple though. They seemed a bit too "into each other" there.

I heard on a documentary though that the Rings and Torch were never really part of the original olympics, but that the Nazi's faked the archeological evidence to look like they were for the Berlin Games. blink.gif

As for the actual events, I watched the Syncro Diving. I had NEVER heard of it before yesterday, but now I think it's the coolest thing ever. I think Canada lost though... What else is new. *sigh*

I'll give you three friggin' guesses where my heart lies, and it isn't Belgium.

Although I'm rooting for the Iraqis even over my own Dutch patriotism (read: usual lack thereof) just because of their situation back home. I'm was applauding for them behind my screen when they had their five minutes of fame in the opening, anyway smile.gif

I saw where the US basketball team got their asses handed to them by Puerto Rico in the first round..... that's just sad. I'm hoping we do well in the track and field events, at least.

I'm watching the 3m synchronized diving competition right now. Wow. Close competition. China in 1st going to the 4th round. USA in 7th. Jamaica not in this competition. laugh.gif
By the way, I like those Puma commercials. My favorite was the one where the Jamaican is rapping and the runner bolts in and hands the guy the baton. laugh.gif Funny.

youre right about the no chemistry part though... but thats not a real excuse considering they got Tim Duncan and Allen Iverson.... i know they cant do everything but COME ON!

Very simple why they lost. They have NO shooters and next to NO experience. Iverson and Richard Jefferson are the closest things they have to jump shooters. And Jefferson is only #47. So they have one of the top 50 shooters in the league. I mean hell, send Macnamara from Syracuse and he'd probably light it up. All they have to do against us is play zone and pack it in on Duncan. We have no zone breakers, so if Iverson isn't on, we're screwed. Not to mention 85% of the team has only 1 or 2 years of experience in the league. Also not going to mention that we invented the game of basketball with a pool of 250 million people to harvest from, and yet we get whooped up on by an island with 2 million people on it.

To add to what Tidu said, there is just a marked lack of talent on this year's basketball team. Shawn Marion? Amare Stoudamire? They're above average, but not great players. Now that the rest of the world has caught up to the US, we probably won't be dominant again until the best players make it a priority to win the gold, which I don't think will happen for awhile.

As for Jamaica, I'd love to see them do well, too, but they're not going to beat America without a poor exchange or a dropped baton in there.

First off, congrats to the Japanese men's Gymnastics team, I've not seen them have that level of talent in my lifetime! Also way to go for USA getting Silver and Romania getting Bronze. On the women's side Romania - Gold, USA - Silver, Russia - Bronze... but what's up with Khorkina getting such a low score in balance beam? Her routine had more difficulty than anyone's.

I've surprised myself how much I've been watching swimming. It's damn exciting. Congrats to Phelps and Thorpe and Jedrzejczak (Poland) and Klochkova (Ukraine), and the entire USA men's team, and South Africa's too... but it's just a tad creepy that there are no black guys on the team. Anyone think Kitajima should get penalized for doing the dolphin thingamajiggy?

i don't think he should get any 'punishments' for doing a quick dolphin kick, becuase the ref's didn't call it, they didn't even notice it. swimming is not like american football, no instant replay desides whether someone is disqualified or not.

plus he didn't set any records in that swim, and he was easily the fastest breaststroker in the wate, he didn't need any dolphin kicks to put him in the lead.

"if the ref doesn't see it, it's legal" first thing you learn in waterpolo (applies to some other sports, ie swimming)
