First, I'll move this to the errors/troubleshooting forum, thanks.

Tiddles and I will need to know more about your system to troubleshoot it. What browser and what version of it do you use? What's your OS? Can you tell us any more about what it means to "not work?" Does it load a blank page? Does it crash your browser?

We can help with more information, but we need everything you can give us. And, as a parting to this post, I can tell you the same thing we tell everyone: If you're actually serious about participating in IRC chat here or anywhere else, download mIRC.

Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? Or perhaps buying a really good looking shirt?

Sorry, you need a Java-enabled browser to use these applets. Either download Java and install it into your browser, or obtain your own IRC client.

I'm runing Windows XP SP1, Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633

i downloaded the java program. don't have any problems as i can see with that.. i dunno what's wrong.. i'll try mirc.

If the old secondary client works but the main one gives you that message, I have no idea what's going on. Can't pass up an opportunity to suggest ditching Internet Explorer in favour of Firefox, Opera or pretty much anything else, though.

I'm having the same issue, all of a sudden. happy.gif Last time I tried to chat from work, I couldn't use the first chat option, but the second worked. Now, there is no second option. sleep.gif I installed Sun Java (and when I return to the page it informs me that I have the latest version installed), and still get the "you need Java" error message when I try to use the web chat. I can't install a new browser or mIRC on this computer; I think my PI would notice.

This computer is running Windows XP with IE as the browser. Is there some sort of setting that I have to mess with in the Java control panel, or anything like that?

We tested the new one on as many browsers as possible before we launched it, and we had it running on every one. These issues are baffling to us, honestly, but we're going to look into them soon.

At the moment it seems that the following combination has issues:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer without Microsoft Java installed
i.e. you can use Sun Java with a proper browser, or you can use MS Java with IE. This makes my recommendation of Sun Java on the chat page look pretty idiotic for now, but there it is. I'll try to have this fixed tonight.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

UPDATE: The main chat page now has a checkbox for "backwards-compatible mode" which should work for this configuration. Please try it and let me know, even if you've found another solution. You can't get to this from the sidebar quickchat though, and you won't be able to resize the chat display.
