No matter how many times I've played through the game (I think I'm up to 6), I always use Terra, Locke, Celes, and Sabin.  Which, when I get to places such as Kefka's Tower and Phoenix Cave, I'm screwed, and have to spend some time leveling up (especially when I get to Kefka's Tower;  it takes me HOURS.  You'd think I would have learned by now).

I don't know how many of these I've replied to, but I might as well do it again.  ^_^

Terra - Awesome spellcaster with good fighting abilities.  Morph, Ultima.  You do the math.
Sabin - Offensive powerhouse.  Good attacks and great Blitzes, which are doubly effective because they're free.
Shadow - Throw + Imp Halberd/Heal Rod = 9999 HP damage, automatic.  Interceptor adds a little variety, and he's a competent caster.
Mog - Excellent support caster, and the Snow Muffler makes him nigh-invincible later on.

Quote (Ace909 @ 10 Aug 2003, 14:23)
I like Cyan, Edgar, Mog, Umaro. My alternate group is Umaro, Gogo, Setzer, Gau (Berserkers,BUT powerful)

yea, I (almost) use the same characters as this list.
but I go for Gogo ( with mimic, rage, tools, and item),  Gau, Umaro, and Relm.
I seem to like watching the Berserkers do my dirty work for me.
altho Relm needs to support the others, since they are in Berserk. and I gave her some very powerful magic to go with it.
and I find Umaro useful battling at the Colosseum.
since he only attacks and the others wastes turns using support magic and wimpy moves.

I agree with Tenshi -
Locke for his speed (he's actually my healer because I'm not exactly going to use his MP for anything offensive, and he usually gets round to healing characters before they die).
Sabin for Blitz. Wow. I  <3  Blitz. Especially when you get bum rush, the game is almost too easy after that.
Terra because her morph makes her magic twice as strong as she is anyway, and considering she's a really good magic user anyway most of her attacks do around 6000.
Celes because she's also a good magic user. I also equip her with the Gem Box and the Gold Hairpin. And occasionally her Rune is useful to keep her MP up, but most of the time when I use Rune I forget I have it on and end up Rune-ing myself when I try to heal my characters or attack with magic.

I personally thought the magic attacks were better than the physical attacks, with the exception of Blitz ( <3  <3  <3 ), which is why I made all my characters learn all the magic spells, and why I never really used the fighters like Edgar and Cyan.

I never used Relm, Strago, Gau, Setzer and Umaro because Relm and Strago were too weak magic-wise in comparison with Celes and Terra, and I don't really like Blue Magic so Gau was out. Setzer was too unpredictable - I used to get the shivers every time I used his slots, and his magic wasn't great, neither were his attacks, and I didn't want to waste good money with GP Rain. While Umaro was a good attacker, when I used him it was usually when I was levelling up with weak characters, and I kept fighting enemies with counter attack, and he seemed to have a suicidal tendancy by attacking the enemy that would kill everyone.

Gogo was good but he creeped me out with the ceiling squashing. I mean, I've heard of protecting your home, but isn't squashing intruders a bit too excessive??

I loved Mog. And his Moogle Charm. I took him when I couldn't be bothered to fight through a place, then it didn't matter who was in my party. I did feel guilty for using Moogle Charm though so I usually left him behind to fight the temptation.

Here is the old topic, if you'd like to see what some of the older members thought of the best Party:

Moderator Edit
Thanks for pointing that out. I've now merged the two topics. -Tiddles

Here is my post from that topic, with one insignificant difference (Muscle belt instead of Black belt):

Edgar: Leads. Basically he keeps himself alive and well so that if everyone dies (Ultima), you still have Edgar.
Genjie Glove
Muscle Belt
Drainer
Atma

Shadow: Top notch fighter. Cleans up whatever needs cleaning.
Momento ring
Sprint Shoes

Terra: To keep the team running at top notch performance (haste2, Cure4, Life3)
Soul Saber (to regain magic)
Gem Box
Economizer

Setzer: Need I say more? Does most of the Damage.
Spell:Quick
Black Belt
Offering
Fixed Dice

Terra-Best spellcaster in the game...or at least, whenever I played. Equipped with Gem Box and Economizer.
Setzer-Secondary Magic user/Attacker. Whenever I play, I'm able to get this guy's magic stats as high as Terra's. Gets Economizer and Earrings (or others, depending on my mood). Plus, he's damn cool. blush.gif
Those two are always in my party (unless I'm leveling people up). Now here's where it gets tricky, because I like switching things around
Locke-Primary healer...yes, healer. I don't like his physical attacks, and his magic attacks are weak, so he uses Curative and Support magic.
Mog-Primary Healer/Secondary Attacker. His attacks themselves I don't relish (Dance notwithstanding, of course), but he's helpful when it comes to healing. He's usually one of the first in my party to learn all the Cures.
Celes-Primary Attacker/Pinch Healer. She's a powerhouse, and Atma Weapon, Raganark, or an Illumina (probably all spelled wrong) helps her stay that way. I only use her magic when I really need it.
Sabin-Same as Celes(minus the swords, of course), but I rarely use him. It's not that I don't like him..I just don't use him. *shrug*
Gogo-Backup to anything. S/he's that good.

But yeah, that's about it. eh.gif

Terra/Celes: Normally Terra. She has stronger magic abilities than Celes and her morph makes her even better. Celes has better HP and defense, but I'd be using her as a mage so she'd be in the back row anyway. Her runic command's pretty useles after the WoB anyway.

Locke: I found his steal command really useful and he was always about a hundred times faster than any of my other characters.

Edgar/Sabin: Normally Edgar because I like his attitude but either way Tools or Blitz worked fine for me.

Gogo: Took a bit of getting used to but definitely the most useful character in the game imo.

My fab-four is definately:

Edgar- Because he knew every single magic spell that exists in FF6 and I equipped him with the Offering relic.(I was sort of bias though cause I gave Edgar the best espers first then Sabin ,Setzer, then Locke)

Locke- Because with the Thief Glove and Genji Glove epuipped he was important and he just plain cool.

Setzer- He's a gambler, although Slot never came int my use Setzer alonf with a Genji Glove (I had 2) his attac power was really high.

Sabin- His Blitz was REALLY handy and I gave him the Gem Box so X-Magic was helpful as well. *Sabin casts Ultima* 5000 damage to all *Sabin casts Cure 3* All party members recieve 3000 HP

I like to use

Locke
Celes
Edgar
Terra

coz it makes 2 pairs, pretty romantic =p their battle power is not bad too, 2 greatest mage, edgar as the "clean up guy" with his auto cross bow, and Locke as the warrior (he is fast).

but for real battle groups, i like

Shadow
Sabin
Terra
Celes

Shadow is very powerful i guess noone doubt that, Sabin is a must have (powerful + good clean up skill). Terra as the mage and Celes will be the healer.

First Time Beating the game

Terra - I just gave her a Gem Box And offering along with illumina..blink.gif

Shadow - I had 99 Imp Halberds..(wondering if i spelled it right)

MOG - He was my Healer.

Cyan - SwdTechs looked cool.

2nd Time

Terra - Very flexible with weapons and armor..plus her magic power and morph ability..Also, economizer helps ALOT.

Mog - I Usually equip him with Dragon Boots and Dragon horn..The Most Damage i did was close to 9000

Strago - I like to cast quick on cyan with terra and have offering + Genji Gloves on him..Thats like ..16 hits!(with Strato and scimitar..I'm still training for kefka's tower)

Setzer - He was the only character that knew pearl..(I Love that Spell)

3rd time

Terra - Very flexible with weapons and armor..plus her magic power and morph ability..Also, economizer helps ALOT.

Mog - I Usually equip him with Dragon Boots and Dragon horn..The Most Damage i did was close to 9000

Cyan - I like to cast quick on cyan with terra and have offering + Genji Gloves on him..Thats like ..16 hits!(with Strato and scimitar..I'm still training for kefka's tower)

And for the last character, I usually switch off between Sabin, for his blitz, and Strago, for his GrandTrain and Step mine Lore.

I prefer using Gau and Sabin. The third and fourth characters are wildcards. Characters I've used a lot in the past include Cyan, Edgar and Celes. Gau is exceedingly powerful. Sabin is a powerhouse throughout the game as well. In my opinion those are the only two no brainer must have characters in the game so I switch around my third and fourth characters.

Well, that depends. Some characters are better in some locations then others. But Sabin is a wonderful addition to any team because of his ability to deal non-elemental damage beyond 9999 thanks to his Genji Glove and two Tiger Fangs. Shadow can dish out barrier-piercing damage of ALL elements with which he can put the serious hurt on anything. Non-offensive special commands like Steal and Runic are my favorites, and considering my Locke is my only member allowed to learn and use Life 3, I'd say Sabin, Shadow, Locke and Celes would be my personal favorite.

I'd have to admit that Wind God Gau/Gogo are both exceedingly nice too. Ah, I guess all characters have their uses.

All of the characters in VI are enjoyable to play, which is why it works really well when the story line forces the party to split up, play in specific combinations, so you can experience them all (clever stuff - i loved the way it allows you to see relationships between different pairings of characters develop as opposed to only being aware of " hero") it also doesn't hand your party to you on a plate.

As a result I mix and match quite a bit depending on the situation, but my final boss team was

EDGAR - my (personal) hero, and magic user
SABIN - feel the POWER
MOG - kupo
GOGO - sabin's power x2

My most powerful team?

Terra: the principal magic user of my team. While Relm may have the highest basic magic power, Terra has the Morph ability, which quadruples magic power and doubles physical power (as I've read). And her magic stat isn't bad either; it's one of the highest. She also has a nice physical attack power to start (as opposed to, say, Rydia). And to top that off, she's the main character of the game.

Strago: The other super-powerful magic user, not because of a high magic stat (which he does have anyways), but because he can learn two different sets of magic: (regular) Magic and Lores. GrandTrain, Quasar, CleanSweep, Aero, StepMine...ah, the power of Lores shall not be underestimated. The only problems are that StepMine costs a lot (well, it depends on how long I've been playing, and I tend NOT to hurry through), and Quasar is hard to find. Big Guard can also be very useful defensively.

Sabin: Strongest physical attacker. His normal physical attack already kicks arse beautifully, but then there are his Blitzes. Air Blade is a decent (around 2000 damage at around level 50) all-target physical attack, and Bum Rush seems to cream everything, doing nearly 7000 damage in one hit (it's especially fun to use it on the "overlapped dinos" in Kefka's Tower).

The last person is a choice between the following: Gogo (he can do almost anything that anyone else can do, just slightly underpowered), Shadow (I've got lots of stuff for him to throw), Setzer (Fixed Dice is about the only truly kick-arse thing he can do, but it is extraordinarily kick-arse), and Gau (rages can do all kinds of cool things, so he has versatility as well as potentially very strong attacks).

My team:

First and Second spots belong to my favorite characters, Sabin and Setzer:
Sabin - Very powerful, blitzes are versitile and Power Sash (or Red Jacket in WoR) helps compensate for what he lacks in the Magic Defense Department. I'm also a fan of the overly-clichéd Sabin+Genji Glove+Offering=Mound of bodies combo.
Setzer - Slots are useful, however many times they backfire (looking at the 2 7's and a BAR joker doom) and if you got two Genji Gloves, Give Setzer one and equip him with Trump and Doom Darts and you'll have another mass-murderer.

The third spot is a toss-up between Edgar and Locke:
Locke - He's not too bad, Capture is nice and giving him an esper with an HP Bonus and an atma weapon can make him very effective.
Edgar - Also a good character, when all is said and done he has slightly higher HP the the other characters that can equip Atma Weapon and his tools aren't bad either. The same atma combo works here too
And the last spot can be a number of people, Wind God Gau, Terra, Celes, Gogo, Mog, anyone works here, although it would probably tend to lean more towards Gau, Terra, or Celes.

Terra - With the right equipment, she can beat ANYTHING hands down.
Edgar - He's one of the more important characters, plus I enjoy using his tools to
amuse myself from time to time.
Sabin - He's Edgar's brother and I also like to use his blitz for the above reason.
For my fourth character, I usually use either Shadow because he's just really cool or Mog for his moogle charm.

I normally use Setzer, Locke, Shadow, and Celes. Now, though, since I am using Gau this time through it will either be Setzer, Locke, Shadow, and Gau or Setzer, Locke, Celes, and Gau.

If I am ever feeling overly saucy I will stay on the floating continent until I have stolen 2 Genji Gloves from Dragons (thus bringing my total up to four) and have a team of just heavy hitters (Shadow, Cyan, Locke [later in the game], and Sabin).

For the most part, though, I use one of the three combinations mentioned earlier.
