Hey all. I just went to the Veldt after running through Kefka's tower, where I fought Retainer a couple of times along with the wrexsoul palette swap that casts roulette.
Now, every other monster I have fought in Kefka's tower has shown up on the Veldt except for these two. I have been roaming for over 30 mins and have had no luck finding a retainer on the veldt. Do I have to fight more enemies in Kefka's tower (perhaps a full group? I know that the monsters on the veldt are organized by a group...) or am I just really unlucky? -------------------- Je ne t'aime plus, Mon amour... Je ne t'aime plus, Tous les jours... |

There are 64 Groups.
56 Groups have one or more monster formations in them you can enounter on the veldt. Retainer are only listed in Group 54. After that, you'll have to fight anohter 55 battles to even get a chance of seeing Retainer again. Assuming you've fought all monster formations in Group 54, that chance would be 25 %. It's not that you're unlucky, it's just that the odds of encountering a specific enemy that is listed in few monster formations is rather small. You think Retainer is tough, try and find Steroidite or Pug. This post has been edited by Djibriel on 5th May 2004 00:17 -------------------- |

Thanks for the explanation. Do I need to fight all formations in a group before they appear on the Veldt, though?

Nope. The game will randomly decide between the monster formations you have fought. So that would mean that the lower the number of monster formations you fought which appear in Group 54, the higher the chance of seeing Retainer.
This is Group 54, by the way: 0 SrBehemoth (undead) 1 Dark Force, Dark Force 2 Retainer, Retainer, Dark Force 3 Hemophyte, Retainer 4 Outsider, Outsider, Madam 5 Mover, Mover, Mover 6 Steroidite 7 Didalos, Didalos. Taken directly from Terii Senshi's Algorithm FAQ, which can be found here: P.S.: Why bother with Retainer anyway? Shock may seem cool, but it's really not that usefull. How powerful it Gau's Retainer-rage Shock, and how does it compare to other powerful skills, like higher-order magic and skills?

Damn that SrBehemoth... He always shows up for that formation, sometimes 2 times in a row. Well, I guess I will get back to scouring the Veldt for any Retainers that dare tread on Gau's territory.
I just want the rage so I can say that I have Leo's Shock. Nothing more, nothing less. heh. -------------------- Je ne t'aime plus, Mon amour... Je ne t'aime plus, Tous les jours... |

That would be the SrBehemoth from Group 57. He's the only monster formation in that Group, and that means you will have to fight him every cycle. It's a good thing, though: you'll soon swim in the BehemothSuits and the Snow Mufflers you got for it.
Shock? 128 Base Power, non-barrier-piercing, non-elemental...I'd say you can put in along the lines of the Tritoch/Alexandr summon. For free. Another reference: a single-target level 3 spell. Wait a minute, Shock actually sounds pretty good! Oh well, he'll never beat good ol' Meteo. It's Hit Rate is pathetic, but I'm a sucker for those legendary moves. Interesting side note: Leo's "Shock" command summons the Megahit spell, while Gau also uses the Megahit spell in his Rage. I know it shows "Shock" as the spell used, but that's how it is. So we should in fact be discussing the Megahit spell. -------------------- |

Eh, just tried again for a bit and I STILL only ran into SrBehemoth for that group....
I never see any of those other monsters, though I CLEARLY fought Retainer and Dark Force before leaving Kefka's tower.... Strange. I always end up fighting SrBehemoth twice in a row before going back to the beginning of the cycle.... Should I go back to Kefka's tower and fight them a bit more? -------------------- Je ne t'aime plus, Mon amour... Je ne t'aime plus, Tous les jours... |

Just bad luck. Or good, depends on how many BehemothSuits/Snow Mufflers you need.
I suggest you take a look at this page. Should answer all questions. -------------------- |

I've never been too good about getting all of Gau's rages myself... I'm pretty lazy about it, even though I like Gau a lot. I always like powerdemon's flare, as it has always been one of my favorite spells, never resisted, always doin good damage. oh sweet flare, my love

Isn't there a way to advance groups more rapidly by saving and restarting? That might help.

Ehr...according to Terii Senshi, loading the game trough the normal in-game Load State will add 14 to the Group number. I haven't tested this, though. There is a better trick:
Whatever you do on the Veldt, you'll always run into the same next monster formation...BUT Fighting a battle of the Veldt (and this includes the Cave on the Veldt too) will re-randomize the battles. Randomize is probably not a good word in this context, since there will probably be some nasty calculation behind it...but it's the best I can do. Oh well. Search at the link I gave you for the monster you want, save after the battle you fought in the Group before the Group that contains your target monster, and try to get it. Missed? Load, fight a battle outside of the Veldt, save again. Try. Missed? Etc. I'd say that getting all Rages without this trick is an extreme "female dog". Ay, there's the rub! Sorry to quote HAMLET, but I was just very excited to try your little trick and see that it works like a charm! I now have the retainer rage and can bask in all of its glory! Well, maybe not, but it sure does look cool.
This makes me want to sing! Sing, little sprite that I made for myself, sing! This post has been edited by Stephen the Third on 8th May 2004 07:08 -------------------- Je ne t'aime plus, Mon amour... Je ne t'aime plus, Tous les jours... |

Quote (Stephen the Third @ 6th May 2004 10:41) Ay, there's the rub! Actually, I think Hamlet says that...unless Macbeth says it, too. Man, finding all of Gau's rages is probably the most tedious and time consuming point of FF6....and the crappiest thing about it is that you technically CAN'T get them all.... |

If you're really bugged by it, there's a patch on the net that makes Siegfried and Chupon appear on the Veldt after fighting them at the Colloseum as well as
Switching the monster formation you get to fight when opening one of the chests in the Cave of the Veldt, from no. 515 (a single Allo Ver) to no. 126 (containing, Big Surprise, a single Allo Ver) so Allo Ver also appears on the Veldt. Pugs' Rage is still a no-no, however, and will probably alwasy be unless somebody would switch him around with another monster. Come to think of it, it WOULD be fun to switch Pugs with White Drgn. Elemental Dragons aren't supposed to be in the 'normal' monsters section of the list anyway, and Pugs' Rage was programmed to be twice as powerful as Catscratch. -------------------- |

Just done Macbeth at school, and I don't recall him saying "Aye, there's the rub!"
I think it's Hamlet. |

Meh, I can't believ that I mistyped and wrote Macbtth. My apologies. I haven't slept much as of late, and th only reason I was up at the time of my post was because of good, old-fashioned amphetamines.
I am actually quite embarassed about that little mistake, s I am a pretty avid fan of Shakespeare. You can't win them all, I suppose. -------------------- Je ne t'aime plus, Mon amour... Je ne t'aime plus, Tous les jours... |
