Use the fight command when your characters are 'critical' (kneeling). Desperation attacks occur randomly.

If you are only interested in seeing some still images, then visit the main site, cavesofnarshe.com, ff6.

If you want to view them yourself, then try this.
Find some monsters which only do low-damage attacks, like 1st class, Brawler, Cadet, Dark Wind, and Leafer.
Cast STOP on them.
Cast SLEEP on them.
Cast VANISH on them.
Attack your own character (who you want to do the Desperation attack) until he has 12.5% or less of his maxHP.
Use X button to skip everyone else's turn, and let only the designated character select Fight. All hits will miss, due to the VANISH. And if you successfully do a Desperation Attack, it will automatically hit because it is a Magic attack.

You will be able to get in 3-4 attacks before you need to cast STOP/VANISH again.

No. Having the 'Weak' status, or kneeling, is enough.

By the way, there is a certain amount of time that need's to be passed before Desperation Attacks occur. Take a look at this site for all the info you ever would need.

I had a Desperation Attack only ONCE...with Sabin...and boy, are they powerful...It was at lvl 24 in the Veldt, and I was down in like, 10 hp left...Sabin did like MAJOR damage...
