I'm not sure if anyone has ever experienced this before, but I have found a way to travel back to the WoB from the WoR.
I had built up a few of my characters to really high levels, so I decided to try to tackle Kefka's tower with two groups consisting of only 1 character each (Terra and Locke), and one normal group (Sabin, Shadow, Celes, Edgar). One of my single character parties consisted only of Locke. In one battle, after Locke had defeated the enemies, on of them used a fatal counter-attack that killed Locke. After this happened, to my surprise Mog appeared on the screen, and I was transported back to the point where you decide between the three scenarios in the WoB! (You know what I'm talking about, when there is Locke's screnario, Sabin's Scenario, Terra/Bannon/Edgar). I chose the Terra/Bannon/Edgar scenario, and although they had lost all of the magic they had learned and all equipment the had found, their levels remained at what they had been in the WoR. (ie. Terra had all the magic she learns at high levels) Now for all I know this may be common knowledge, but I had never heard of this bug before so I thought I would find out if anyone else had ever heard about this... so on that note, has anyone heard of this happening before? |

I have never heard of the bug, and I can pretty much guarantee that nobody else has ever heard of this. To be honest with you: I'm rather skeptical. I see nothing in this situation that could've possible triggered a bug like this, and although there IS in fact a bug known that can transport you back to the World of Balance, a situation like this is quite bizarre. You're probably talking about the Retainer killing Locke with Tradeoff here.
On the other hand, you sound honest enough, especially because this bug doesn't involve any extremely strong weaponary or any other obvious advantage. Could you tell us what happens when you enter a town? You did save there, didn't you? This post has been edited by Djibriel on 10th June 2004 17:12 -------------------- |

Can't say that I've heard of it. If it's true it would be interesting to try out though...

You are right on about Retainer killing Locke with the tradeoff, and I am being honest about this. I would be interested to see if a few other people tried this if it may happen to them as well. Maybe there is some overlap in the code with there being 3 active parties, with one containing only Locke, that caused this to happen... Im not sure but this is very interesting to me.
I actually still have it open in my emulator in this state as we speak... I completed the Terra/Banon/Edgar scenario, and it was exactly the same (as far as I can tell). I am about to try the Locke scenario, which could be different because he is the one who died to bring me here. I have saved the state at this time (Im using ZSNESWIN v. 1.36) and I would be happy to send it if you would like (assuming I can figure out how). |

Fine. You have my trust
![]() I'd test it myself, but my only rom with a usefull save state has been screwed by somebody who is not necessarily, but perhaps just might be, me. I can't enter the tower due to this. I'd ask you for a screenshot, but FF VI hacking has become all too easy these days. Are you sure you haven't accidentaly done anything like loading a safe state? A more detailed description of what happened might be usefull. You say that Mog 'appeared'. How, exactly? -------------------- |

I'm pretty positive that when you ie in the game and you keep your hands off the Load Sta0e button, you will be transported to the screen where you can s!lect a Save State after the title screen. However, if you have .nly a single save state, that o*e will automatically load.
(br>Do me a favor, will you? Kill yourself. Your party, I mean. See if i happens again. My hypothesis is that you have auto-loaded yourself in this scene. Your equipment didn't come along, and neither did your spells. I don't know about those levels. You're sure they're the exact ones as they were before Locke died? And you're sure this Save State, should it be one, doesn't handle a game where you leveled up insanely/hacked your way into the levels? The only thing i can think of is that you was put back to this point because the last time you saved was here normally. you don't go back to the select file screen it takes you back to the last save point you save at.. you don't lose your level.. just stuff that you collected. That's proably what happen.
i do know of a bug that will take you back to the world of balance tho. to do it you have to not kill off all the rats in the place where you go to ultros and die to them... then you'll be put back on the world of balance. only thing is you have to reset your game to get back to the world of ruin. -------------------- |

That doesn't sound like a bug at all. When you die it takes you back to the last place you saved. You most likely had never saved since the scenario selection part so that's where it took you when you died.

Quote you don't lose your level.. just stuff that you collected. That's proably what happen. Yes, you do lose your levels. Everything you gained from the time you saved: steps, gold, levels, etc. You lose it all. There *might* be a bug hidden here, but it's most likely not that travelling back to the WoB. If Menace is telling the truth and he kept his levels even though he was auto-loaded to a Save Stave, then that is most definately a bug. -------------------- |

You know what Gogo, I think you are right. I almost exclusivly use save state in the emulator, and I bet you that the last time I actually saved it was at that scenario selection. That would explain it all...

I did however keep all my levels... the strangest part of that is; In the Locke scenario you meet Celes for the first time. So when I got her, she still had all of the levels from WoR (shes at 62). So there is still a small bug here, just not the one I thought.
Edit Just to point out, the gold, steps, time all got reset, just not the levels... strange... This post has been edited by Menace to Sobriety on 10th June 2004 18:35 |

It isn't a bug, you are supposed to keep your levels. I just tested it for myself on the original game cart.

That's just plain ridiculous. Square just CANNOT have meant it that way. 1stClass, did you just test this while having one save state or did you pick it from several? This would mean that having extremely high-leveled character can just be put into the very start of the game.
Ofcourse, Square never picuted anybody playing trough the entire game without saving and then dying to re-appear as a lvl 70 party. But it's possible. Edit I just checked. The very explanation of the Save Point sais it "Though any treasures, GP, etc. are gone, Exp. Points and Levels will be retained". I can't seen why Square would want to do this, but in all honesty this can't be an official bug. This post has been edited by Djibriel on 10th June 2004 19:22 -------------------- |

I hate to sound Vauge and stupid... (save the Japes please) but i heard of some bug involving the Operah house where it transports you back to the WoB. I could be wrong though, or it (probably) is false.

It's not false. ZED has a description of the bug on his site. I suggest you go visit him if you want to learn about the bug. In short: when you leave a rat at the Opera House alive troughout the Celes' Opera scenario, you can then visit the Opera House in the World of Ruin, go to the rafters, fight the rat and when you lose: you are outside the Opera House in the World of Balance.

yes, you can go back into the WoB, you must leave at least 1 ratin the Opera house in the WoB , then you fight in the WoR against one rat and lose and you are in the WoB

Yea, it doesn't make much sense from a normal point of view why you should keep your levels if your steps and timer are reset. |

Be warned, though. I seem to remember hearing something about glitching up the game when trying to enter towns. Also, I, ZED or anybody else I'd believe right away has never been able to confirm this thing. It's just that it has been heared in so many seperate occassions and that it would be right up Square's alley to leave something like this hanging.
So seriously, confirmation would be great. This post has been edited by Djibriel on 10th June 2004 21:58 -------------------- |

I don't know if I count as a relyable source (in other words, I don't really) but I have performed this glitch (the rat one). I had no problem entering towns (that I can remember), but you can never go back to the world of ruin, as the airship is nowhere to be found. I posted this bug in the FF6 trivia topic a while back.

Of course the thing with keeping your levels after dying is true... it's the whole core of the Lete River Leveling Loop trick.
![]() I'm actually surprised you've never heard of that before... ![]() This post has been edited by Zephir on 10th June 2004 22:43 -------------------- ~Status Report~ * Completed... No, it's not. The Lete River trick is all about NOT dying. Just going rounds and rounds with the action button in action.
The reason I never heard of it is that it is explicitly mentioned in the game. That means people don't need to discuss it. I just read over it all the time, assuming that it said something else. Actually, I'm surprised I never knew myself. It's pretty basic, really. -------------------- |

Actually, my SNES died a lot if I left it running for hours on the Lete River... so what we did was go for a long time, then kill off all our characters, start over, and save. Then repeat the next day.
![]() We hit upwards of level 80 that way before we got impatient. :-P So, yes, for us the Lete River trick was all about leveling, dying, and starting over with all our experience minus new items. Potions came cheap, anyway. ![]() -------------------- ~Status Report~ * Completed... Dragon's Head * Completed... Soldiers of the Empire: Disciples (release pending) * In Progress/Undecided... Actually, Djibriel, you do keep your levels if you die and come back. Square intended it that way. In fact, this was a SELLING POINT of the game... Die, and you lose all items, spells, etc.... but you keep all experience (another reason to hit reset if you die and are trying to keep low levels).
To quote the instruction manual: Losers Prosper Even if the members of your party are annihilated, they'll retain their Experience Points. Don't reset the game. If you ask me, it's stupid. Plain and simple. The game's already ridiculously easy, and in the rare occassion that you actually need to think, not mash random buttons to kill everything in your path, you get a second chance that's easier then the first.
Also...you have a Instruction Manual? You don't actually OWN the game, do you? -------------------- |
