How do you *personally* pronounce Locke?

It's one of those odd names...

I know now that it's pronounced "Lock" but I still call him "Lock·e". It's just what I'm used to. Isn't it a french name?

Yeah, it's more likely Lock. It kinda fits better. He's a treasure hunter with the whole lock picking thing goin' on.

Locke's name is most probably "lock".
1. His Japanese version name is Lock.
2. He picks locks.
3. His name alludes to John Locke if you pronounce it the same way John Locke's name is pronounced, which is "lock".

By the way, I can't seem to figure out how your other pronunciation sounds.

I usually refer to him as Lock, since it seems to fit with his character in general (Lock, lock pick, thief, etc) Plus, it sounds strange being said any other way, at least to me.

No way, I'm the ONLY ONE!? Ya gotta be kiddin' me. For real man I didn't expect landslide results like this. Oh well.

Er, maybe some people don't have a full understanding of what this poll is about. I'm not asking how you're supposed to pronounce Locke. That's already kinda obvious. I'm asking how you personally pronounce Locke. There, now maybe someone will vote Lock·e. tongue.gif

Low-key, like the (norse?) god by that name. I personally don't like just saying "lock" (though that is most probably the correct way) because it is to close to lock picking... it sounds a bit corny to me. I mostly hear it said as "lock-ee."

The FF Compendium links his name to the English philosopher John Locke.

I used to call him Lock-e, and still do on occasion, just as I refer to FF6 as FF3 at times. I also used to call Celes "See leez."

I say 'Lock' as in "I locked the door, Jill."

I pronounce the same way I would say the surnames Thorne or Sharpe.

By the time I started playing FF6, my english was not that great. In fact, it was very poor, so I had the tendency to pronounce with a crappy french accent.
Anyway, I always pronoucned Lock, as back then I didn't even know you could pronounce the 'ee' at the end. I still pronounce Items "eetems" too, since I learned it from games before learning it at school.

I have always sayed Lock-ee. I think it sounds better. I also used to call Sabin "Saban" and celes "Cel-ess". I've since reverted the later two back to how they are supposed to be pronounced. But I don't want to change Lock-ee. It just sounds cooler with the ee.

I'm the exact opposite..I think the pronounciation of Lock'ee is the weird one. It's always been lock to me, and always will be.

Sabin I know is pronounced "Sa-been," but how is Celes pronounced? I always say "See-lees."

To everyone whose first language is English: its a silent "E" like every other WORD YOU KNOW! duh!

I always pronounced it "lock" because of that reason, not because of who John Locke is or because he's a thief, but because I speak English. Properly.

to everyone else, kudos to you for taking the time to figure it out. smile.gif

Okay - perhaps at some point someone should nail down an official FF6 character name pronunciation guide, because the pronunciation I personally use the most is apparently way off: I suppose spelled in dumbed-down phonetic English it would come out as "Lohk", with a long "o". I try to take the most obvious phonetic interpretation of all the names, but I adopted the one above to explain away why they would bother adding an "e" on the end in the first place. Of the above poll choices, though, I would definitely choose "lock" for all the reasons given previously.

Let's see how far off the beaten path I really am with some other perhaps anomalous choices:
  • Celes: like "Celeste" but with no ending "t"
  • Sabin: rhymes with "cabin", as would be suggested by the world map (I think - I know I have seen the phrase "Sabin's Cabin" somewhere though).
  • "Cid": Just like "Sid".
  • Gestahl: as in "guest-all"
  • Cyan: "seye-ann", as in the printing color primary
  • Gau: "gow"

Hmm, that list turned out to be longer than I thought. Arguments?

I actually haven't heard anyone I know say "Lockee" before, but I have heard these:
Celes: "see lees", "seh lez", "seh less"
Gau: "gow", "goh"
Sabin: "say bin", "saa [short a] bin"
Gestahl: "guess tall", "guesh tall"

The only one that I pronounce correctly is Locke (Lock).

That's how I pronounce these

Celes = Say-less (in the beginning I pronounced it Sell)
Gau = Go
Sabin = Sa (short a) - there's no equivalent in English (I think) for those who understand french, I pronounce it exactly like «bain», the bath
Gesthal = Guess - tal (short a)
Cyan = there's no equivalent, but it sounds like See ya + a very short "n"

Locke's always been Lock-ee, though I know it's Lock.
Cyan-My brother says Si (ling I) ann, I say See-in
Celes- Sel-ess sounds right though I say Sells
Gau- Gaw-yu or maybe just Gaw

He's a thief, so the "Lock" pronounciation seems more appropriate. Also, it's how I've always said his name. sleep.gif
