I wouldn't eat poutine if you paid me, but judging from what Dragon_Fire says about it, I'm sure it's quite good, if you go for that sort of thing. :-) I have heard of people who will come up from the US and drive an hour or two each way to get poutine.

My opinion of Quebec is relatively high. I don't think it's a bad province, and there are a lot of interesting people there. There are also jerks, of course, and bad politicians, but what province/state/country doesn't have that?

I get a little perturbed if a french-speaking Quebecois doesn't like my Acadian french, but I know that those people are just part of the jerk category.

As for the Independance of Quebec, I'm against. What's to happen to us poor Atlantic province people if we're separated from the West side (and Ontario) by a mass of land that isn't Canadian anymore? It just reeks of inconvenience.

personally, i can't wait to get my hands on some poutine, a donare(sp) from pizza delight, and some good canadian beer, and a few coffee crisp bars, and some smarties! and good chinese food. Yes, it's true. America sucks in the junk food department. As far as quebec, thats where im from, so i love the province. I think it's pretty gorgous (especially st. anne on the mountain church...i think thats the name of it). As far as the people there i like most of them, although i moved away too early to learn french so now i get kind of uncomfortable around them. In the last family portrait my extended family took, we're all standing on the steps of the church and some french ladies are looking at us in a not too nice manner. But for the most part people are cool. As far as breaking away, I think that elena is right and that it's only the elitists (who seems to be french) who really pushed for it. My aunt worked in the polls and came back with stories of rigged and unbalanced poll counters. Also, my cousin started singing Oh, Canada behind one of the leaders of the movement to seperate.

But seriously folks! Go get some canadian junk food! You haven't lived if you haven't gotten a bleu and a poutine!

I don't like Canada... it's too cold, too socialist, and too full of druggies. Did I mention it's too cold?

I know what you mean... I lived in the Dutch part of Belgium for three and a half years, and 60 degrees made me sweat! I moved to Florida afterward, and was wearing a jacket when it was 60 degrees! Temperature is sooo relative... crazy...

I'm Canadian, and I hate the way people stereotype us. Some think our country's called "Canadia", or call us "Canedians", say we live in igloos, and claim we worship pencils. What the Hell!?

You guys are getting borderline ridiculous, here. Try to keep it on the topic of Canada, and not some fictional stereotypical place, okay?

Also, if you have never been to Canada, you don't get to say it's too cold. Unless you want to come here now in the summer and sweat for a while first as you stand under the hot sun. Then you're free to comment on the temperature.

Seriously, I don't want to see anymore offensive comments towards Canada. We're not being offensive to Americans, so there's no reason for you to be offensive to us.

It's NOT really cold here. It's fine. Sure, in the Winter it can get pretty cold, but does that give you permission to bash us? Ugh...Elena99's post should clear it up.

One thing that I find funny is when some french tourists arrive in Quebec. Some of them think that we live in igloo, that native americans walk in the streets with ancestral suits, that they can visit the Gaspésie, the Saguenay, the Rockies and native americans in only one day. I don't care about those who don't like Canada and/or Québec. They have the right to don't like the Canada. But be polite or else... tongue.gif

Geez, you Canadians are a defensive bunch... I clearly stated that I was joking, anyway. And besides, the USA is probably the most bashed country in the world. (I lived in Europe for three and a half years... trust me, I'd know.)

well first off... we're not defensive.... but everyone makes up rumors about what they THINK it's like up here.... and if you were born, raised, and have great respect as a canadian.... you would be pretty offended too.... i know it was a joke... but some people are REALLY proud about their canadian heritage and don't like the 'name' being smeared in the mud.... anyways.... i'm glad that my thread has had so much response.... and a reasonable amount of canadians in CoN

Huh? What? It's not true?!?

Lemme say something...

Normaly, I don't very much like the idea to categorize people and then discriminate them (positively or negatively). But, when it's a joke, I don't care very much. Even when someone make fun of me, if I like the joke, I laugh. Otherwise... I punch tongue.gif

Question: Is there two version of "Oh Canada!" or is the song already bilingual?

I always wondered that. I figured it would be in French, but I've only heard it in English before. [National Anthem]

And one by one I watched every constellation die
And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard
Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star
I should've known, walked all the way home
To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone

Back in public school they used to have the first part of the anthem in English, the middle in French, and the end in English again. Sometimes they'd make us sing the whole thing, but we had no idea what the french bit ment, we just took it for granted it was the ususal anthem lyrics. For all we know we could have been singing, "O Canada, We make good poutine." pinch.gif

Anydangway. I've actualy met a fair bit of Americans online, and most of them know as much about Canada as I do. I mean, they might not really understand our government or be able to name all the provinces, but hey, I can't name all the states. I've never met anyone who thought we lived in Igloos and that we worshiped anything odd.

Here's what it is in english:

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

And here's the french:

Ô Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

It's not a word for word translation by any means, but it's got the same spirit. The french mentions the Cross, and flowers, for one, and the english does not. So schools and the government tend to mix it up when sung, so that it's all in there. I don't think you would sing the french part in english, or english in french (though maybe in Quebec)

If the quebecois ever invented something worthwhile, it was the poutine. It's the only thing I'd ever credit the french here for.

Here in Montreal, you learn the national anthem based on what school you're in, since our city is split into two governing school boards, the EMSB (the English Montreal School Board) and um, well I forget what the French School Board is called, but yeah. If you go to a french school, you learn it in entirely french, and you're taught about the fleur de lis first (the flower that Quebec uses as it's provincal flag). If you go to an english school here, you learn the first half in english and the last half in french.

Speak french or die. That's the motto here. I doubt Quebec is going to make a seperation bid for some time, what with the failing goverment we've got going on over here. Charet made a lot of promises to get into power, and he's still just lounging around doing absolutly nothing but harassing school boards.

Should, however, we face and lose another referendum, I'm moving my pyschotic arse the hell out of here. Head on over to Ontario or somewhere more friendly. Man, if you think those terrorists in the middle east are bad, you've obviously never seen a) An angry, drunk quebecois or cool.gif a rioting, happy, drunken quebcois.

Hardly the friendly place we're cracked out to be, on the inside at least.

If you ask me, that's a part of why all the talk of separation hurts Quebec. Companies and individuals move away fearing instability. sad.gif I hope you all stay, because despite any resentment with regard to separation talk, we really love you. wub.gif In an age where people are supposed to try and get together, it's a shame to witness the many nations around the world who wish to separate.

Oh and "I AM CANADIAN." tongue.gif

P.S. - I think that most Americans are great. In fact you guys barely seem any different at all from us. Oh and Europe is wonderful too! smile.gif
