Well, there are the traditional formats--midi, wav, mp3, and whatnot. So all was well, but I wasn't too satisfied with how I couldn't get tracks with an intro sequence to loop indefinitely (since I didn't know how to "cut" music files into smaller pieces).
But then I discovered SPC music. At 64.5 KB per file, SPC music (my guess) contains bascially the information used by the Super Nintendo/Famicom to produce music, and using something like the program WinSPC, I can literally sleep to something like FFV's Dear Friends. And now I have all of Dancing Mad at my disposal, as well as the rest of a complete FFVI and FFV and (newly obtained) FFIV soundtrack. I also have MMX, MMX2, and MMX3 for soundtrack databases. So far the only problem I've encountered is with SPC music is that the first second or so of CT's "Legendary Enemies" track is cut off, but I was able to find a ROM file of CT music (as well as a Jet Bike minigame ROM and a character information/sprites ROM). So now, I look at my mp3 of the Wind Man stage theme from Mega Man 6 (which I got from www.protoman.com), and I think: Is there some similar format for which I could just get some single music file that, when played by the right program will loop the music forever without stopping or replaying the intro (non-looped) portion? And so that's my question: What are the music formats for other systems--especially for NES/Famicom--that are analogous to SPC music being SNES/Super Famicom music? And what programs can be used to play such music? -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. NES: NSF
PS1: PSF PS2: PSF2 And there's GYM for Mega Drive, but it doesn't really count, because you can't loop and all, and some others for systems I don't really know about. As for programs, the Zophar's Domain music archives usually link to suitable players for the relevant format. If there's a second missed off the start of a song, it probably couldn't be ripped cleanly. ZSNES allows you to rip your own SPCs (use the F1 menu) and it works for most games. |

Please pardon me for being stupid if I am, but I went to Zophar's Domain and downloaded DeliPlayer2 and then went ahead to the music databases. I downloaded Mega Man 6 and was quite surprised to find just a single NSF file, which I tried to play by opening it with DP2...and DP2 gave me an error. Then I tried opening it through DP2, and guess what happened? It started with Wind Man's theme (whose mp3 I had previously opened before I did this, although I closed DP2 after opening it--I doubt this was the problem) okay, but (1) it didn't loop, and (2) it didn't end at the end of the loop either, and also (3) it only seems to contain Wind Man, and not only that, the theme is tuned one whole tone too low (although the speed is correct).
Wait...I got myself Meridian Advance, and that works like a charm. Now all I have to do is uninstall DP2...Thanks a lot, in any case! -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Mmm, NSFs are weird, because you have all the game tracks in one file. And players do vary in quality. I tend to stick to Winamp plugins these days.

Is there some analogous sound filetype for N64 music? And if there is, could you direct me to a database of them? I'd really like the original version of Star Wolf's theme from Star Fox 64, not just some midi representation.
Thanks for the help! -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! I use Mastodon, where I am @[email protected] ( https://sakurajima.moe/@glennmagusharvey ) |

A USF format for N64 music is in the works. See USF Central. The only soundtracks available so far are Mario 64 and Pilotwings.

Some years ago, I made a habit of converting SPC's into Impluse Tracker digital music files (IT files). They sounded EXACTLY the same, could be played in WinAmp, and supported looping.

Is there a format for Game Boy Advance files?
