Quote (Nameless Virtues @ 18th December 2003 22:48) O yes, they had to have the weakest paladin sword stronger than the most advanced dark knight sword, perhaps there could be other swords in the world of FF4 that belong to the DK that would be just as strong as Cecil's avanced weapons, but he wouldn't bother picking them up for he was a paladin. Oooh. That's an interesting point, NV. Maybe that would have been a cool addition to the story. I can picture the scene: Cecil and the party are traveling in some dark cave. They find a treasure chest, perhaps guarded by monsters. After defeating the monsters, Cecil opens the chest. Inside is an ancient sword, beautifully crafted and perfectly balanced--the sort of sword any warrior would be proud to wield. Cecil kneels and reaches out to pick it up...and then stops, his fingers inches from the sword's hilt. He can feel the dark energy flowing from the weapon, whispering in the corners of his mind, calling out to him. He is tempted. He remembers the power he had as a Dark Knight, and the way it felt to use that power. He could have that power again if he wanted. All he would have to do is pick up the sword, feel its weight in his hand, use it to spill the blood of a living creature. He could be strong, stronger than he was before, stronger than he is now. Cecil knows that he has a choice to make...and he makes it. Slowly, Cecil withdraws his hand from the sword. He stands up and closes the chest firmly, and the sword's seductive whispers are silenced. He turns his back on the chest, faces his friends, and says decisively, "Let's go." |

Palidin-Cecil was stronger and a better asset, but for me it's evil all the way.
He was definitly cooler as a Dark Knight. |

I'm sure these points have been said to death (I mean look at how old this topic is). But I'm gonna put in my 2 cents anyway. Personally, When I first played ff4, I liked Paladin Cecil more. However, upon recently replaying the game, I find I don't think he really fit either role properly... Cecil always kinda seemed unsure of what to do next (to me). Which doesn't really fit what I think of when I think of a Paladin.
"The compassion to pursue good, the will to uphold law, and the power to defeat evil..." I dunno why, but that doesn't seem much like Cecil to me, and then too many people have pointed out how COMPLETELY wrong Cecil was (attitude wise) as a Dark Knight. Don't get me wrong, he still swung a sword pretty darn hard, just wasn't a huge fan of his character. btw, Syndarr, very cool little scene (I'd say where I got that quote from, but I'm afraid I may be flogged :S) -------------------- Club Sandwiches. I have to say I prefer the Dark Knight. I finally got the PS version, and I realized how awesome Dark Wave was. Around Mysdia... high teen level, Death sword, Cecil would do around 100-150 damage to all the creatures in a battle and only lose about 1/8th of his own (40-50)
That is a good deal. It really helps speed up battles, especially with those Needlers. Which at first, Paladin can't take out in one hit... -------------------- burger |

Hey all, the name says it all if you thought it was weird or stupid or both. Anyways thank you all for voting on what you think Cecil should be. Yes Cecil is Locke and Cloud and Tidus and Squal. Maybe I should have that as my nick. hmm. Nevermind. Anyways I am going to do a remix of Final Fantasy IV. Called Final Fantasy IV Remix, unless anyone has a better name to call it. There will be more twists more characters more magic and the story does alter. Meaning the main character switches between Kain, Cecil, Edge, and Goblez quite often.

Paladin, without a doubt.
Cecil never fit the whole "dark knight" image with his whole, "why are we doing this? I feel bad" mentality. The pure and heroic Paladin class suits him far better. -------------------- Je ne t'aime plus, Mon amour... Je ne t'aime plus, Tous les jours... |

Quote (Divine Dragon @ 17th October 2002 10:11) I gotta agree with Neal and R51 on this one. Preferred paladin simply because it fit better with his character. well don't see that much of him as a DK. you should really take into account what might have gone through to get there... i mean when i think of dark knight, i think of a man who wasn't neccessarily a bad guy, but not really a good guy either... but i think cecil had a concious, and it finally caught up with him, he knew he couldn't defeat golbez as a DK, which he had to deal with. i think the circumstances only forced him to denounce the darkness quicker. but without them we'd have no story right? sdm -------------------- ?gnisufnoc siht sI |

Well, its a little hard for me to make a reponse that isnt skewed by the annoyances I suffered from the FF2 cecil, i mean his damage was lame, he had not abilities, and most of the time i ws trying to figure out what the hell he was suppose to be, by his combat graphic, i mean it looked cool, but i was like.. whoa. But on the plus side, Cecil a dark knight. I mean, it provided the story with alot of flavor, him having the whole identity crisis and all. As for him being a paladin, i loved it, u could always use another healer. And plus when he casts spells it looks so pimp, oh man, like the yellow and red flashy thingy on his hand. Oh man.

I think that the Dark knight class would be cooler in some future games. I dunno Maybe they threw it in FFXI.. I haven't done much research on the game. However Cecil did not fit into the Dark knight when the games starts. It was said that he wore the helmet to hide his face because he was ashamed.

While I had no problem with the paladin thing, I've always had a problem with goody goods and the Dark Knight was excactly what the game needed, to give it that bad element.

I voted for paladin because every time I play I look forward to changing his character. It reminds me of FF1 when you prove your bravery and become adults, which I remember from when my dad played when I was 4. It brings back alot of nostalgic feelings. Good happy feelings. Cecil as Paladin, definetly.

True, but Cecil did not really add any evil elements to the protagonists' side in the game... This poll is really, really old. I remember voting in this one a long time ago, acually when i I first found this place. I am pretty sure I picked Paladin, mostly becasue the first time i saw him, when i was a lad, he was a Paladin. So I loved him since. Kind of a hero thing I had going on there. Call me weird but...

He definitely looks cooler as a DK, and Dark Wave's a great ability, but the Paladin is so integral to the storyline, and I love a good sin to salvation thread!

He is a Paladin for me, even though I have only played a small amount of FFIV (I am about to fight Beigan, what a pain!) He is a Palidan because of the magic, and he seems to be a bit more powerful as a Paildan than a DK.

Straight forward, in my opinion, the Paladin was a much better character, than the Dark Knight.
Even if you had prefered one over the other, it was still necessary for him to be a Dark Knight in the first place, and then renouncing the dark sword for the light. Because the transformation would never have been as dramatic if Cecil had not been a dark knight to begin with, since he had to go against his own kingdom and King, to do the right thing. And the game would not nearly be as good, if the story had already started Cecil as a Paladin to begin with, his trial on Mnt. Ordeals, where he had to fight his former self, is what made the game. Basically the two classes both Dark Knight and Paladin, in this story, go hand in hand. The transformation to a Paladin would not have been nearly as good, without being a dark knight in the first place. |

That is very true, however, Cecil as a dark knight had a good side, which is an unusual trait for a dark knight. When he became a palladin, he essentially expelled his evil side, and became a valiant, holy, knight in shining armor. In other words, Cecil as a dark knight wasn't a stereotypical dark knight, but Cecil as a palladin was a stereotyipical palladin. From the point he became a palladin on, his actions were exactly what almost any other palladin would do.
Also, darkness wave is awesome, and the dark knight looks cooler. This post has been edited by Fox on 14th May 2004 14:16 -------------------- Mercy?! I like Cecil as a paladin. He's very interesting as a Dark Knight, but once he becomes a paladin, he's accepted the mistakes of his past and started dealing with the repercussions. There's just something more intriguing about someone headed up, to me, than there is about someone headed down.
