Been wasting quite a bit of time lately with FTL: Faster Than Light.
I've beaten the game a couple times on Easy difficulty with the Torus. Probably my favorite ship so far. I've just started playing Fallout 3, my first playthrough in around 3 years. It's been really enjoyable so far, and I'd forgotten how great the Capital Wasteland is to explore.

Aside from the daily Starcraft 2 multiplayer I've been playing a couple of new games recently.
I finished Outlast in one night. It's a horror set in an insane asylum and is heavily influenced from Amnesia among other games. No weapons and lots of situational jump scares. It's a good game, don't get me wrong, but it's not hugely scary. I read a Youtube comment saying they hid in a locker for about 2 hours. It's funny because the game mechanics are suited to running and taking on the enemies head-on rather than hiding. The patrol AI has a sort of gravitational pull towards the player so hiding doesn't pay off much. Also the speed of the character is insane, and he can push enemies out the way. So there isn't much tension when running and hiding for only a few seconds is a better strategy. I feel less dread and more of a thrill. Can't complain! Good solid gameplay and a really good story but it's not scary and the ending is awful. Classic 6 or 7 out of 10 material. Another one night (2 hours!) game I just finished is The Wolf Among Us. Same guys who made The Walking Dead and yeah it's a damn good game so far. I was a bit confused at first and wasn't convinced by the characters but after about 30 minutes I was absolutely hooked. It looks and sounds amazing. Great art style. Gutted that I can't play more yet! Other than that I'm playing a bit of the Steam FFVII to try and get all the achievements in one run. I'm trying to play it very quickly but not quite a speed run. I'm about 9 hours into the game and have Aeris Great Gospel unlocked... and remembered why she's clearly the best character in the game (super mage and broken limits). Nearly at the Temple of the Ancients. Think I might have busted it already though because I had to sell a load of materia because I was broke and I might have sold something I can't buy again, and the most daunting achievement is to master every materia in the game!!! Only time will tell. It's fun though. No idea how many times I've played this game through... -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Mostly been trying to do some Amalur stuff, but I keep getting sidetracked by GTA Online. My main goal was to buy a personal Buzzard (1.75 million), so I was hoping to scrounge up one and a quarter before the 500K Stimulus package is released. Probably a huge waste of time -- I think personal helis have to be phoned in to be delivered...or something -- but flying free of earthly bonds is my fave part of GTA games. It'll take a few more Ballers and armored trucks to hit the figure though.

Started seriously playing Avadon: the Black Fortress. It's a WRPG by the same folks who made the Avernum series. I'm in the second area now. Been mainly picking Natalie and Jenell as my helpers. (Why can't I pick all four?
![]() Speaking of RPGs, i've been playing D&D (3.5e). First campaign I'm playing here; first time with a GM other than my first GM, actually. This has been pretty fun, though our group tends to get easily derailed with imagining funny nonsense and cracking jokes. Our GM is a little bit more fast-and-loose with the rules than I'm used to...though it works I guess. (Though I'm still a bit peeved at the fact that we've basically house-ruled that attacks of opportunity are provoked by moving into rather than (more-than-5-foot) moving out of threatened squares...) One of the players there got me interested in joining another group, this one using the Pathfinder system. I was up late last night creating a character, and we were discussing what could be done if I played as a Warlock (a 3rd-party class in this system, and rather different from the eldritch-blasting Warlock of 3.5e). Also, I finally just now collected 100% of the cards in 100% Orange Juice. Those last two too forever. So it turns out it's actually possible to run the store out of cards -- it only sells so many of each variety, and I actually ran the store out of the expansion pack cards first. I figured those would contain the last few rares I hadn't picked up yet...but no, it turns out Final Battle and Little War are actually in the base set, and I hadn't run that out yet. Well, time to go put a "completed" mark on this on my entry for this game on Backloggery. Speaking of Backloggery, i've been interested in joining a gamer-logging site more along the lines of MyAnimeList. I've never quite been satisfied by how Backloggery doesn't have cross-referencing -- you just list the games you've played, and that's it. (The social features could also use some work but they're less relevant details as far as my own use is concerned.) But I tried joining gamerDNA, and it looked promising...until it crashed every time I tried to add a game. I tried adding Recettear, I tried adding Terraria, I tried it on my home computer at home, I tried it in a computer lab computer at school...still did that. Sigh... Can anyone recommend such a site (other than Backloggery or gamerDNA)? Update: on the eXceed series, specifically eXceed 1: Gun Bullet Children
http://www.romhacking.net/translations/2041/ There is now the closest thing to an official translation of the game. It was done by the folks at Nyu-Media, who localized the 2nd and 3rd games. Remember, this is the game whose source code was lost. Well, someone went and hacked it and now there's a translation. Just beat eXceed - Gun Bullet Children. Thanks, translation job! FYI I was playing on Normal (or "NOMAL"), as Chinatsu Kagaya. I think my game might run too fast at certain points, leading to such phenomena as the stage 4 boss having a nigh-undodgeable first-phase. Which is odd since I've read some people saying their game ran too slowly...
I also ALMOST beat Fate of the World, Fuel Crisis mode. Everything was going fine, until...I hit 3 degrees of warming. Then I lost the game on the last turn. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! Beat story mode in Fairy Bloom Freesia. It's a platformer beat-em-up, where you play as a fairy who...well, beats up monsters that come invading a village. Actually has a plot that's one step up from an excuse plot. And pretty decent music. I also didn't expect to be good at this kind of game, but let me tell, the two most important things in this game are: dodging (activated by moving while blocking), and the Regeneration skill. With those two, you can survive ANYTHING. Well, almost everything. Crowd control skills would also be nice. The main thing I'm less excited about, about this game, is the fact that all the enemies except the bosses follow the same few visual designs. Justified in that they're supposed to be mook golems/constructs, I guess...
Freesia was made by the same people behind Ether Vapor, and the crisp and high-quality 3D style shows. Also getting somewhere in eXceed 3rd - Jade Penetrate Black Package. (Second worst game name ever, behind eXceed - Gun Bullet Children.) This game is like the first game, except grazing enemy shots doesn't fill your charge bar. At least I don't think it does...anyway, I've gotten to the fourth boss but never beaten her yet. Kinda about as far as I've gotten with eXceed 2nd. As much as I dislike Steam trading cards, I gotta say, the fact that the eXceed games and Freesia had cards caused me to try out the eXceed games (and gain some more shmup experience in the process) and actually finish playing Freesia. Currently doing the Guardian Mode playthrough of Freesia. I'm up to level thirty-something I think. A friend of mine got me to start playing Terraria again because he's setting up a server. Whoa...lots of new features. I first played in version 1.0 and I think I stopped when it was 1.01 or 1.1... That said I haven't decided whether to use my old world and charater or to make a new world and run with that. I probably will do the latter at some point... Also played a bunch of Stealth Bastard Deluxe. It's a total makeover of the freeware Stealth Bastard, with all-new levels and gameplay features. And actually funnier, possibly. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! Okay, so I've just determined that Skyrim is actually the best of the Elder Scrolls games. Why? Because I can @^$#ing play it!
I honestly didn't get what the problem was peeps had with TES when playing Skyrim. It took me playing that muther%($#er in the middle of a California CENTRAL VALLEY heat wave in a house with NO A/C to get it to stall. "What are they talking about 'unstable'!" I thought, "This is literally the least crash-prone game I've played all year!" Well I took my hand at Oblivion a few months back only to have it CTD within 10-15 secs of being given control of my character, and now, having given Morrowind a try and its...well it doesn't CTD within 10 seconds of play. Nope, it gets in a good thirty minutes or so before it simply locks up and requires a full restart. Just enough time to clearly understand that everything that made Skyrim fun (and playable) it does not have. This post has been edited by Narratorway on 1st December 2013 20:30 -------------------- |

I've since beaten both eXceed 1st (Gun Bullet Children) and eXceed 3rd (Jade Penetrate Black Package).
What with the people chattering about Risk of Rain these days, I want to make a Risk of Rayne pun (Rayne Lindwurm is the main character of eXceed 3rd). Been starting to get around to cleaning up my Team Fortress 2 inventory -- its being nearly full has been the biggest deterrent to me actually playing the game. A slow internet connection has also helped, of course. So maybe I'll get around to it sometime. Heck, I didn't even touch it during the Halloween season. Speaking of Halloween season, Terraria finally got a huge update, plus a Halloween-specific update. My friend who webmasters that forum that I've been an admin at has finally gotten around to looking into setting up a Terraria server. I dropped in with a new character just for fun. Named her Eryi, because she's gonna die haplessly all the time, getting mauled by...well, everything. Right now it's snow slimes. Dunno when I'll get around to generating a whole new world and actually exploring it and building my way around it or something. I mean, it did take me about 100 hours the first time... I picked up Neverwinter Nights 2 on GOG recently. Taking bets on how long it takes me to actually get around to playing it. Started playing Recettear again.
Just discovered what I think is a bug -- with a multi-item order, the pricing status of the first item determines the pricing status of the others -- so if you want to make maximum revenue, put your high-priced item first. (How you choose to price after that -- whether you take full advantage of the bug or just play as if it were fixed -- is up to you.) Though it's possible this isn't a bug, but a feature derived from the effect of first impressions in real life... ![]() This post has been edited by Glenn Magus Harvey on 5th December 2013 21:04 -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. I'm working on a speed run of Silent Hill 2.
such a weird game to try and do this on as it isn't a game associated with speed, at all. Funny things you have to do like in the nighttime streets section, you have to run until James can't sprint any more, turn your torch off, then press the map button, which will stop him in his tracks and say "it's too dark to read the map." But if you cancel that message quick enough, you won't lose his forward momentum, and he'll start sprinting again, it resets his stamina. My best time to beat the game start to finish is 1hour 4minutes. -------------------- www.youtube.com/blinje The victor sacrificed the vanquished to the heavens |

A few games on my backlog had gained Steam trading cards so I got bored one time and started messing with them. And also some games without cards too.
Tried playing Uplink. Definitely interesting. But it seems like I'll need to actually sit down for a few hours at a time to enjoy this. I was definitely amused at how the IP addresses contains numbers far above 255. The graphics could also afford to be a little bigger, especially for me on my 768p screen... Played some more Dragon Age: Origins. Now I'm at the camp. Wanted to do a blind playthrough but still ended up looking up a guide to see how to get the guard's lunch to the prisoner...and learned that I coud use my steal skill. Tried playing Diadra Empty. Seems interesting though a bit hard to control. Maybe I'll have to try it again later. Finally beat RefleX. The last level becomes a bit insane. Unfortunately it's scripted such that there's only one ending (aside from you getting a Game Over)...I tried to carefully force another one but it didn't work. La-Mulana's trading cards -- or more relevantly, La-Mulana's going on sale and my being too curious and checking out the Steam discussion forums for La-Mulana -- got me to check out the game again. I'd played it a little before it got on Steam (incidentally, it seems your save files are not saved with Steam but somewhere else, so I could access my Desura!La-Mulana save file with my Steam!La-Mulana instance), but I went further this time. Ventured into the Spring in the Sky very early. Also did something that seemed intuitive from videogame genre savviness but in retrospect is incredibly stupid: breaking a breakable block directly above oneself. Was duly rewarded with an achievement. This is definitely La-Mulana, all right. Started Cherry Tree High Comedy Club out of curiosity (and the cards didn't hurt). I hear it's like a dating sim but with a premise other than romance. Maybe it is; I haven't played dating sims before. Seems like an interesting game. I'm about halfway through, and I actually want to keep playing. Started playing Anodyne...and actually finished it. It's an interesting Zelda-like game (i.e. a top-down metroidvania, basically), but with a dreamier soundtrack and a much greater variety of environments (a hotel? a circus? space?). The gameplay and the puzzles are generally rather intuitive, and there's a ton of secrets to be found but the game plays like an interesting walk through imagination -- from very pretty scenes to rather horrifying things. I've heard that it may be a metaphor for going through depression, which gives an interesting perspective on some of the events. Recommended. (For one of the secrets, don't forget that what you hold is a broom, and can be used to clean things. And help people.) Started Knytt Underground. Seems like an interesting combination of Knytt/Knytt Stories and some ball mechanics (probably from Within A Deep Forest? which I haven't played). As usual, it has Nifflas's distinctive visual style and ambience. Tried playing Sequence again now that it has cards. I still find the switching between fields kinda confusing, even when I have "reverse rotation" thing turned on which helped a bit. In any case, the concept is interesting, and the humor is hilarious (e.g. description for the item "Polish remover" is "Hitler."), but the game still feels a little tedious. Maybe I need to practice it a bit more... Also tried SATAZIUS. Plays kinda like an old Gradius or Darius game. Complete with checkpoints -- no instant restarting. Rather difficult, especially as dying penalizes you and makes it harder to continue because you lose some weapon advancement. (Contrast Ether Vapor Remaster and RefleX, which give you more continues if you game over, thus gradually giving you the chance to see more plot even if you don't get any better at the game.) Finally, I played the Steam Economy f2p MMO. Got myself some number of Snow Globe cards. Actually crafted them (rather than hoarding them) this time because the cards would expire today. Ended up using extra cards (as well as some cards from a friend) to help various other people complete their sets, and also complete a couple other sets of mine. Derpily traded away a La-Mulana card in the process (oops). Ended up deciding to take a stand of refusing to use the Steam Market, in order to convince someone to do a trade with me, and subsequently succeeded at keeping up this pledge. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing.
