Currently playing Breath of Death VII: The Beginning. It's a parody RPG that's similar to Dragon Quest, but has branching level-ups (you choose what bonus you receive with each level) and combo and timer system in battle. Attacks build up a combo count, and combo finisher attacks clear the count but scale in damage based on the combo. And the timer system isn't exactly a timer, but it serves as one: every round, all enemy stats increase by 10%. Better finish fights QUICK.
If that wasn't enough, the game discourages leveling up by capping off the total number of random encounters for each area in the game. Usually the max is high enough that you can level up with abandon anyway, but there ya go. On top of all of those oldschool-with-a-twist mechanics, the game is really funny. I've already counted dozens of dialog and place-name references to Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, Diablo, Earthbound and several other classic old RPGs. Breath of Death VII: The Beginning started out last year on Xbox Live and very recently had a Steam version made. You can get it 10% off ($2.69 instead of $2.99) if you order in the next week. Its sorta-sequel, Cthulu Saves the World: Super Hyper Enhanced Championship Edition Alpha Diamond DX Plus Alpha FES HD - Premium Enhanced Game of the Year Collector's Edition (without Avatars!), is supposed to be just as good and has the same price point. I have been playing too much Team Fortress 2.
Though I have in the meantime also beaten Dracula in Order of Ecclesia. Blackmore turned out to be not all that difficult, but more a matter of memorizing his patterns to develop strategies against combinations of them.
Probably more problematic were Dracula and Eligor. Eligor especially, because it's hard to get practice. Make two mistakes on its back and you're flung far off. Note that I was aiming to get all the medals. It would be quite a lot easier if all I did was fight the bosses, shrug off damage, and scarf down a plate of curry or a ham sandwich whenever the bar got too low. In other news, since I've already forgotten most of the details of where I'd played to in Recettear, I think I'm going to start over from scratch. Hopefully I'll be able to win on loop 1 this time. Haha you said "magnet". That said, that glyph is for magnetic balls, not for damage...
And what else are they gonna do? Smack the wall? I mean, Eligor already does that, but... That said, it always makes me wonder, why doesn't Eligor whacking Shanoa off its back at the start of the battle not count for damage. Yeah, me thinks that they ran out of budget for properly programming Eligor. It also doesn't help that you can just spam Melio Arcus to home in on his weak points. -------------------- Oops! I should have done that.
My glyphs of choice were: * Vol Ascia (didn't have Melio yet) * Vol Ascia * Vis Fio then * Fulgur * Fulgur * Sapiens Fio I should also check what prizes the boss rushes have. That's what I need to finish the game at this point, mostly. Well apart from doing Large Cavern and Training Hall enough times to get all their rare treasure. And apart from playing dodgeball and sniper-only maps on TF2, that is. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Death Penalty finally got himself some Portal 2, and now that he's finished the campaign, I've been running him through co-op and not getting him very many achievements as yet. That's about it for me, I'm not exactly swimming in free time here.

This weekend, I made the mistake of purchasing Football Manager '11 for my iPhone. It runs a bit slow since I don't think it's made for two-year-old hardware like mine, but it's just about everything I've ever liked about the FM series, made much simpler for the smaller device. No flashy gameplay, just the old 2D view, and most of the detail is still there, just a bit simplified in a way that appeals to me. I've played through a season and a half in the last 36 hours, already.
My one quibble is that as far as I can see, only Europe is represented at all. I wouldn't go manage in most other territories, but I probably WOULD give a try to my MLS team, and it's just not possible. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

I am, and have been for some time now, utterly submerged in Fallout: New Vegas - and its neverending add-ons. Having heard that there are a proposed total of 7 such add-ons, I'm not sure I'll ever finish it...
I also own a copy of LA Noire, but due to aforementioned Vegas addiction, it saw about a day's playtime before being benched indefinitely... -------------------- We apologise for the inconvenience |

I oughta finish Nostalgia.
And actually complete Order of Ecclesia. I've beaten the game, gotten all the medals, and now I just need to get the boss rush prizes and the last few darn items. The good news: I've just learned about the Nitesco unions. And I oughta ACTUALLY GET AROUND TO RESTARTING RECETTEAR, RATHER THAN TALKING ENDLESSLY ABOUT THE GAME AND READING ABOUT ITS LOCALIZATION WORK AND STUFF. Been a while since I posted here.
![]() I'm playing Recettear and while it's a sweet game I'm not making much progress, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, the Sam & Max games by Telltale (currently on season 3, episode 2), Portal 2 with my British science partner and... Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Reverie. Getting beaten by the final boss for the third time put me off a bit though so I'm taking a break. |

I just downloaded the Chantelise demo on Steam. Though I doubt I'll be buying that game for a while; I have quite a backlog of games to play and finish.
In particular, I oughta finish Recettear. I'll get onto that soon. I got distracted by TF2 again; was playing on a sniper map earlier. This particular map had this oddity where the metal beams beneath this billboard are actually a solid wall. I and two opponents fired on each other several times in a row before realizing this... I'm moving to the end of FF 3, and I just finished Valkyrie Profile 2. I'm debating on whether to replay my Star Ocean games. My gaming really took a hit when my PS3 went down. Need it fixed for Fall/Winter/2012.

Super Mario RPG (Virtual Console) Dance Central Record of Agarest War Bastion Dance Central is highly addicting IMO and Bastion gives a unique spin on the RPG/Adventure genre. Hopefully I'll finish all of them or at least most of them before September 6th, because then it's Disgaea 4 time. I managed to beat all of those before today. Except for Disgaea 2, which was already beaten - I just did some extra leveling in that one. Go me. Currently stuck at the Fire Temple of 3D Dot Game Heroes, which is a shameless Zelda clone full to bursting with Zelda and Dragon Quest references. Fire Temple is fifth dungeon out of six or seven. It's pretty good - the dungeons are simplistic in design, but the game still has a reasonable challenge level. About 30 minutes ago I bought Disgaea 4 at a midnight release line at a Gamestop. I was the only person there for Disgaea - the other 10-15 people were each getting Dead Island, Resistance 3, or Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. I will be playing a LOT of Disgaea 4 in the next few weeks. -------------------- |

I have been playing too much Team Fortress 2.
To break that, I've recently finished playing Guardian of Paradise. (It's a free Zelda-like indie game from Japan. There's a translation. You need D3DRM.DLL to play it.) A friend from TV Tropes got me into playing the MMORPG Eden Eternal, as well. It's my first MMORPG, and so far I've found myself wasting far too much time regrouping the parties I join... I finally picked Arkham Asylum up again about two weeks ago, and have played through most of the base storyline now, I think. I still am at only 33% completion in the file, though, so I'm not sure how much of the remaining two thirds is represented by story versus challenges/Riddler Trophies/etc.
With all the hubbub going around about Human Revolution, a game I can not afford to buy right now, I've also finally installed and started the copy of its predecessor, Invisible War, that I bought on a Steam 75% off sale a year or so ago. It's about as average as everyone has ever told me it was, and if I were playing it blind, having only played the original Deus Ex without the benefit of being warned about the sequel, I'd be completely disgusted right now. As it is, it's just over the threshold of "this game isn't worth finishing." Currently playing Disgaea 4 and nothing else.
In terms of characters and storyline it's... okay. Not the best in the series... but I'm only about halfway through. Jury's still out on the storyline and characters, but thus far the only characters out of the core cast I really like are the main character, his werewolf buddy, and the adorable tentacle monster. The rest of the cast are... well, annoying. Not as good as Disgaea 1, about the same level as 2 or 3. Storyline is meh so far, but I hope/expect that **** gets real in the ending. In terms of gameplay, this is the best in the series. Hell, it's one of the best strategy RPGs EVER. It has fewer classes than in Disgaea 3 (they even got rid of a few fan favorites like the Majin and martial artist classes), but they're better balanced. Gameplay is similar to D3, but grinding is easier, skills are more streamlined, and everything is deeper. For the first time ever, I'm actually excited to use monster classes in a Disgaea game. You can make any character useful and powerful, and even BETTER if you team up monsters with humanoid classes. Basically I'm in love with this game and haven't had this much fun with a strategy RPG in a long time. EDIT: just beat Disgaea 4. I think the storyline in 1 or 2 might be a little better, but in terms of gameplay and raw content 4 is the best. I will definitely be revisiting it for the post-game one day down the line. But not too soon, I need to recover from this binge. This post has been edited by laszlow on 14th September 2011 03:15 -------------------- |

I'm also replaying Half-Life because I love it. I've almost reached Xen. Weh, I hate that stupid level and its stupid puzzles and stupid structure and stupid amount of enemies. Nihilanth can go to hell too. This post has been edited by Metal King Slime on 24th September 2011 15:32 |
