I liked him well enough. So he has issues; big deal. At least he had character :-P It's more than you can say for some characters, like Bartz. Or Reina.

I had an old signature. Now I've changed it.

He was annoying sometimes, being all solem and silent. I prefer my main characters to be spunky and cool like Zidane. Cloud was mopey too, but I draw the line at Squall. I didn't dislike him though, he was still okay. Null vote.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: if I wanted to play a socially inept, self absorbed moron, I'd just walk out into the real world.

There has to be some heroism in a lead character, which Cloud did muster at times in spite of the (frankly much worse) personal problems he had to deal with; Squall lacked even that. He had to be persuaded into the rescue from that sorceress chamber thing, even, if I remember correctly. He was a mere pawn of fate, and a useless lunkhead who didn't deserve to get the girl in any respect. (Girls who swarm after the most moronic people you can find are a plentiful commodity in the real world, too, and something I certainly don't want to see in something that should be about escapism.)

Squall had the depth of an average-to-bad teen drama lead, and has no place on the end of my gamepad. I'd much rather no character than that character.

therefore he is not cool

Exactly. I much prefer protagonists that are heros, but it is nice to have something different. I have only seen two true heroes in FF, Cecil and Zidane. The rest, you have a blank hero that served mostly as a bond for the other characters (Butz and Frionel), and FFVI's amazing lack of one.
Cloud was a special case. He had all these problems, and as Tiddles mentioned, he had a small amount of heroism within him to muster.
But Squall was a complete flip - he was kind of like Cloud without any level of heroic virtue. He was an actual person.
And I have a hard time believing that most of you would act in a tremendously different manner than Squal in the same situation with the same problems.

I liked Squall. Sure, he was socially inept, but some people are like that. Sure, he probably didn't deserve the girl, but then do a lot of guys? Whatever the case, I'll say one thing: Squall is a badass. Despite this being fine testament to my shallow personality, I'll stick with it. He had a cool bomber jacket, a cool gunblade, a cool scar, a cool "I'm really serious...seriously" face, a cool necklace...you get the point. Just as I loved heros like Zidane, who are Squall's opposites, I loved Squall. If all characters were like Zidane, I'd get bored of them.

hell yeah squall was cool. him and the whole game get a bad rap that i dont get. squall was a pissed off 17 year old kid, and thats not really an uncommon thing. he was just a regular guy who happened to be in the right place at the right time. squall is good stuff.

I chose the third choice, Tiddles summed up what made Squall a terrible character perfectly.

squall appealed to me because relates to many teens out there. It made the game feel more real, besides he did open up a bit more later on

I hated him and his stupid gun blade and the way you upgraded it and the whiney little babys that were wit him throughout the entire game...it's even sad to say that FF9 was even far better than FF8 and I didn't really care for FF9 either.

I like Squall so he wasnt up beat but at least he wasnt TOO up beat, Tidus anyone and i always hated tidus's voice it made parts that were supposed to be sad or serouis HILLARIOUS just because of his voice that sounds high whenever he gets excited

Frankly, Squall is more poser Rivethead more than poser Goth. He's not morbid, melancholy, or transcendentalist. Neither is he whiney, hormone-driven, nor phoney. He has a good taste in fashion (black can never look bad). He's got the Griever thing going on as well. Squall is better than a plastic haired MC Hammer-pants wearing liar, Mccaulay Culkin with a tail, and Meg Ryan. Heck, he's the only non-blonde FF male hero apart from Bartz.

cecil wasnt blonde, he had white hair, in all squalls just a moody teen, with a bit of a hard past

I think Squall should be terminated with extreme predjudice. I think he should get the kind of beating Sonny gave Carlo in The Godfather. Then he should die a terrifying death at gun point, the kind of death Yakavetta got at the end The Boondock Saints. Then he should be strung by the heels from a lamp post, then cut down on Sunday to rot in the gutter during the Sabbath. Then he should be flayed, his skin worn as a bathrobe, his toenails used to stud the boots of his killer, his bones ground up to dust and scattered to the 4 corners of the earth. Then Balamb Garden should be burnt to the ground and the lands it stood on salted.

A bit overdramatic? Just think of Squall going "..." and you'll realize I'm right.

I can't buy Squall as a good character because he seems to unreastically adhere to the stereotype of gloomy separatist.
