It doesn't really mean anything and is hardly worth being concerned over. Chalk it up to translation if you wish, but they're not really swords in the western sense that he's using. The names on his weapons are used for Katanas elsewhere in the series, but he's not a ninja, so why call them that?

Is there any certain definition that says, specifically, that KNIVES are smal bladesl? As far as I know, no. Maybe they can be sword-like, as well.

Cyan's weapons are katanas. FF6 is not the only game to feature this mis-translation. In Final Fantasy Tactis, the "Equip Knife" ability allows you to equip katanas. Cyan's blades share characteristics of the katanas in FFT and also the ninja swords in FF4 at least in regards to names and icons.

I was always under the impression that cyan's swordtech did not check his weapons attack power. I always figured he used a sword for swordtech and knives to attack otherwise.

I personally doubt what DC8 said, but thanks to |)arkShadow for pointing that out. Maybe i90east can correct that in his EV2?
I think "knife" here just refers to any slicing weapon. For the short "kitchen"/"assassin"-style "knife" that you're talking about, I think they called that a Dirk in FFVI. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Quote (Rangers51 @ 23rd March 2004 16:45) The names on his weapons are used for Katanas elsewhere in the series, but he's not a ninja, so why call them that? Because Ninjas don't use Katanas. I equate Cyan to a Samurai, which do use katanas. What did they have down as his job in FFVIj? -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

Samurai, I believe? I think I heard it was that.
And I thought ninjas use straight katanas. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! I use Mastodon, where I am @[email protected] ( https://sakurajima.moe/@glennmagusharvey ) |

I heartily agree that Cyan is a Samurai. If you examine his theme music, Doma culture, fighting style, etc. I think you will agree as well.

Cyan's weapons should be called Katanas rather than a Knife. I just think putting knife is stupid. Maybe they couldn't fit Katana in or something like that.

Actually, they could. They could fit the seven letters of "SPECIAL", couldn't they?
Why they didn't is another question that I can't answer. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing.
