Quoth the "Algorithms FAQ" on GameFAQs:

Quote
If you attack while the character's current HP < their max HP / 8, then there
is a 1 in 16 chance of doing a desperation attack instead of a normal attack.

Gau and Umaro do not have desperation attacks.

If the character has any of the following statuses, then they will never do
a desperation attack: Muddle, Image, Clear, Zombie

Characters will never use their desperation attack more than once each combat.

While the Battle Time Counter (See section 2.8 Battle Timing) is less than
768, characters won't use their desperation attacks. (i.e. Characters will
never use Desperation Attacks during the first 25.6 seconds of combat)

All Desperation attacks are unblockable (see step 3 in hit determination)

All Desperation attacks are magical attacks, that ignore defense (skip steps
5, 6b, 6c, 6d, 6e, 6f, and 7 in damage calculation.)

Sabre Soul and Star Prism are instant death attacks, rather than damage-dealing
attacks like the others. Shadow Fang will also inflict seizure status.

Here is every character's desperation attack:

Char    Attack              Power
Locke    Mirager            139
Terra    Riot Blade          142
Celes    Spin Edge          143
Edgar    Royal Shock        143
Sabin    Tiger Break        140
Cyan    Back Blade          140
Mog      Moogle Rush        150
Strago  Sabre Soul            0
Relm    Star Prism            0
Shadow  Shadow Fang        140
Setzer  Red Card            147
Gogo    X-Meteo            146

That should help.

It's like it was said, you have to be in near fatal status and use the command Fight. If you want to see them that bad, you can Vanish and enemy and keep attacking. It will say "miss" all the time, except when the DA shows up. thumbup.gif

Oddly enough, I have played FFVI many times in the past, yet had never seen a desperation attack. But, just today, I saw both Cyan's and Setzer's, within half an hour of each other!

Has anyone formulated a method to keep characters injured, so that they have a chance to use a DA, yet still in relative safety? I suppose if you put a wall ring on someone who was wounded, and a true knight on another character, you would have a decent chance of keeping them alive AND injured the entire fight.

well, you could get them injured, then equip them sufficiently to give them 250+ defense and mag. defense, and really high m. block. generally godly, and with high max. hp you could get them injured with relatively high HP, and when their HP gets really low, just use a tonic, which would get them to a comfortable level without getting out of critical status. So there was a use for those tonics after all!

I could be talking rubbish, however. I am not as fully awake as I might like.

That is so demanding, Alphasmart. The best strategy and easy could be a combination of Blue wizard and mine. ( Vanish an enemy, then have some other character have equipped the True Knight relic), If you are Vanished, i'm not sure that you could release an DA. High Magic Evasion is very easy too, so that could work too, besides if you got High HP...near fatal satatus would in a rank of 1-1249 HP. thumbup.gif

This will sound idiotic, I understand, but what I am interested in is preparing my team so that I can use DA's in a practical way, instead of just watching them. Later in the game this is pointless, as there are many, more efficent ways to deal mass damage. However, mid game, I think they could be handy against bosses and large enemies.

So the challenge is, How can we prep a character for DA using only those items found part-way through the game, and without massive stats?
I am going to try using running shoes (For more attacks, this more chances for DA) and a wall ring (Consistent magic protection against many spells) on an injured guy, then putting true knights on everyone else in the party. All those items are common enough.

Okay, now I know I have a bad track record for remembering stuff in FF VI. However I do recall having Terra perform Deasperation multiple times against Lete River Ultros. It's etched in my head like a photograph 'cause with the low levels I was trying to maintain, I kept on losing to him otherwise with one hit kill bannon and all. Two or three rounds of Riot Blade pulled it off quite nicely however. I even recall just reviving yet not healing Terra just for that purpose. The event really, really stuck in my mind 'cause the attack did an amazing four digets of damage, which is something that I was unable to achive otherwise.

And if what I'm saying isn't proven to be a load of rubbish because I'm a forgetful, halucinating idiot who tends to blur events together, I think it'd be a first with my recollection type stuff. . . That saddens me sad.gif .
