In my opinion, in order of most depth to least depth (and including Kefka, Leo, and Gestahl):
Terra>Celes>Locke>Cyan>Shadow>Setzer>Gau>Edgar>Kefka>Relm>Sabin>Strago>Leo>Mog>Gestahl>Umaro>Gogo -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. I would think it would have to be either Shadow or Celes. Shadow is just mystry through and through, but if you really pay attention you can piece together a big part of his life, and what he is all about. Celes also allows for you to dwell deep into the heart of a character who is confused and alone, and very much on the edge of despair at moments. Really I guess most of the characters are fascinating if you want to think about it though.

My vote would be for Shadow, with the runner-up being a tie between Locke and Terra.
Shadow obviously has layers to him, as many people have pointed out. Locke probably started out (adolescent) life as a wreckless and carefree individual, and remained so until his wrecklessness earned him a guilty conscience, which leads him to the almost paladin-esque "I swear I will protect you" persona he exhibits in the time frame of FF6. Terra reminds me a bit of Rogue from X-Men, who inherited extraordinary powers at birth but never really embraces them (and even fears them) because all she wants to be is normal. Add to that her realization that she is the only one who will ever be able to mend the fences between humans and Espers, and you have one confused morphin' half-esper. Celes gets an honorary mention, but she seems to be much more static in her personality (at least to me). She was given magical power at a very early age, but unlike Terra she accepted them and is even proud of them. She also has a very steady moral compass, as she had decided already to turn against the Empire before the time frame of FF6 starts. Her personal/moral dilemna stems from her relationship with Locke (and when is that not confusing for anyone?). She probably did experience some despair/frustration if she felt like she was competing with an old love of his, but the game script (at least American) never really plays this part up a great deal. I've feel that Locke is the most in-depth character. Right from the beginning he starts going on about protecting people and how it's his duty to do so. Then, you get an entire description for his back story, and he struggles with it continually throughout the entire game. Then,
Possible spoilers: highlight to view you get to see it wrap up all very nicely. Plus, he's part of the game's love story. I would have to say that, besides Umaro and Gogo, Gau is the least developed. All you really know is the story of his birth. Possible spoilers: highlight to view He doesn't even have a cool cutscene when you get him back in the WoR and his wrap-up story in the WoR isn't particularily enticing. Other characters that are well developed would definitely be Celes, Terra, Cyan, and Shadow (but not necessarily in that order). Strago and Relm have decent stories, but they aren't too in-depth, an Sabin is fairly weak in that area, too. I would have to say Edgar is quite well developed from the beginning. He doesn't really develop much throughout the game, but he's always seen as a good king and he always takes charge. Unfortunately, the English version takes out a lot of dialogue with him hitting on a lot of girls. Actually, the scene where Relm and Strago join Possible spoilers: highlight to view and they all go to the airship, this happens:after General Leo dies ENGLISH Relm: What's wrong, Lover Boy? Edgar: How old are you? Relm: 10, why? I'm coming along, too! (Runs off) Edgar: You've grown up entirely too fast. Lighten up, okay? JAPANESE Relm: What's wrong, Randy Man? Edgar: How old are you? Relm: 10, why? I'm coming, too! (Runs off) Edgar: Man, that's almost criminal... Don't even think about it. As you can see, Edgar was actually considering hitting on Relm! LOL Anyway, I find him well-developed, but he stays pretty much where he is in that respect throughout the entire game. -------------------- --sbq92 <>< |
