Did anyone really think it was the end?

Hey...I have a question...did anyone really think that it was the end of the game after the scene where the espers and General Leo meet, and have their little peace talk? I don't remember ever thinking that that could be the end, even the first time I saw it, because I was like, "Wait a second...there's still unresolved issues"...then sure enough, there was Kefka. Did anyone really think, "Well, that's that I guess...it's over!"?

Here's another question...why does Kefka destroy the magitek armor wearing soldiers who accompany him during that scene? He says he's going to neatralize what I assume is the Espers' abilities, but then his soldiers vanish shortly after. Was he intentionally getting rid of them, or was that just because the magic he was using was so powerful it destroyed even his own men? Just curious...biggrin.gif

I did not think it was the end, but I think that was partly due to the Nintendo Power spoilers...

As for the destruction of the magitek soldiers, I always figured that since the magitek armor was made by infusing Esper magic into them, neutralizing the Espers' abilities would have a similar effect on all Esper magic, thus rendering the magitek armor useless, or even destroying it.

he doesn't seem like the kinda guy to worry about what his ubermagic of ultimate death and destruction is going to do to his own allies...I figured they were just killed.

Wow, sbq92, that's pretty deep...I didn't look into it that much before, but it would kind of make sense. I'd never doubt Kefka doesn't care about his own troops...look what he did to Doma in spite of the protests that soldiers of the Empire were being held prisoner in the castle. The only person Kefka cares about is Kefka, and at times, it seems like he's not really even concerned what becomes of himself... cool.gif

I knew it was not the end, as the PS Version...

More or less tells you that the world will suffer some disaster.

And the Magitek? IMO, Kefka killed them as he does not care about his men, just himself

Pretty much the same reason as sbq92. I read about the game and followed the guides before I even bought it. It did spoil it quite a bit. I also got the game in '95 on American import and had to get my UK Snes converted just to make it run properly at 60Hz!

I had it spoiled by internet walkthroughs. But I wish I hadn't.

No, I did not think that the peace talk between Leo and the Espers was going to be the end of the game. However, the first time I played through the game I DID think that the Floating Continent was going to be the end of the game. I figured my characters were going to have to deal with Kefka, then ultimately Gestahl. Imagine my surprise when the ridiculously cool Kefka turned on that old fart and then tore up the world of balance. wacko.gif

I never really thought that it was the ending, because I had watched my bros play it dozens of times. I had only seen them get a small bit into the game, but when I myself got to the said part, I was too anxious to get on with the story to care about if the game was ending or not.

As for if it was spoiled, like Glenn, I used many online guides, so it wasn't really.

i thought the floating continent was the end of the game too. I was lucky in that i didn't have access to the internet and i was smart enough not to read ahead in the NP guide.

It got me for half a second as I said "Oh, it's the end. Wait, it can't be, it's to early for that."

If we're talking about spoilers, All this topic has really been a spoiler, someone really should edit in some spoiler tags.

The internet wasn't much back then but I had already seen my cousin playing in the WoR. Oh, and the FF3us SNES cart came with a map of the WoR so I'm guessing that this question is for those who didn't buy the SNES cart new. Anyway I didn't know the details other than the fact that there is another world, so the events at the end of the WoB were still surprizing.

I bought the cartridge from a friend who'd played it to the point of exhaustion (which I personally don't think exists! biggrin.gif) Funny thing...I'd seen the maps of both worlds, but never thought anything of it. I guess I just had trouble putting two and two together...laugh.gif

(Old Geezer Alert!!) Back in my day, when I first played this game borrowed from my buddy, the internet did not exist in a user friendly form, and if you wanted to find a walkthrough, you had to know just where to go and what it was called (if it even existed!). The PC's we had didn't even use mice, you had to do everything from a command prompt on a black screen with green text. So basically if you wanted to cheat, you had to use game magazines, which I was too cheap to buy.

I confess to thinking the floating continent was the end as well. It seemed like a fitting climax, though the game felt a bit short at that point...maybe I was comparing it to FF4, which went on a bit longer than FFVI has at this point. wink.gif

First post. Hi all.

When I played FF6 back in '95 I was totally not surprised when in the floating continent Kefka took over. It is a typical plot twist, going all the way back to BoF. Not that I'm criticizing the best bad guy ever.... after all, the WAY he did was surprising. And who can forget "Run, run or you'll be well done!" ? I guess the biggest giveaway that the game was nowhere near over at that point was the fact that I still didn't have access to higher level spells, and my levels were still too low for it to be an FF end sequence (which generally means characters with levels from 40 to 60).

Welcome! I guess that would be another good indicator (the levels thing), though somehow I totally didn't notice that the first time I played through. The first time I played through, and Kefka kept on pulling his stunts and becoming more powerful, I actually started to get irritated with his character...I was like, "KEFKA??? Blech! I thought I got rid of him half a dozen times already!" When he ruined the world at the Floating Continent point, that was the last straw. After that, everything I did in the WoR to build up to defeat him was personal, and it was kind of anticlimactic that I didn't get to see him wallow in misery, or here some final dramtic quote from him after he was defeated (even a lousy "Nooooo!!!!" would have given me great satisfaction). I felt the same way years later when I put the finishing moves on Sephiroth, and he merely faded away into nothingness...yes, these truly scheming and nasty villains can be a huge pain, but they at least deserve some last words, or some sort of acknowledgement of how much they suck and how powerful the good guys have become...Kefka, however, remains bitter and full of himself straight to the very end... dry.gif

Hey, Kefka was a significant improvement from NeoExDeath. I mean... a tree. thumbdown.gif

Although I agree that villains should always have some sort of death quote.

My favorite is probably Sarevok from BG1, when you finally kill him he collapses on the floor laughing as blood spews everywhere. Creepy to the very end.

Hey...I'm not dogging Kefka...villains have a right be be annoying...if a villain doesn't get your goat up and make you demand justice and their total destruction, they haven't done their job very well. laugh.gif

Kefka was unique from the other SNES/NES FF final bosses I'd battled, and that right there is important. He had a lot more personality than Zeromus...having a final boss be someone who's been harassing you all game long gives you a great sense of accomplishment when the final battle is won.

Don't underestimate the power of evil trees...those apple throwing grouchy trees on "The Wizard of Oz" scared the crud out of me...and they were far from all powerful...laugh.gif

Oh yeah... Zeromus... some random bad guy introduced near the end of the plot to FF4. Even ExDeath was more interesting than that guy.

And, I haven't seen the Wizard of Oz... but the evil tree in Sleepy Hollow was freaky.

I don't think it is the end there has to be more to FFVI. If you got any ideas post them in the FFVI-2 topic. biggrin.gif

I do admit to thinking that the enjoyable part of the game had died when I woke up on the solitary island as Celes, and spent almost an hour aimlessly trying to figure out what to do. I thought, "Is it possible I screwed up somewhere, and the punishment for that is that I have to spend the rest of my days in this game as one of my only so-so favorite characters, feeding fish to this old fart who keeps griping about his bad health? This is like "Virtual Volunteering for the Old and Feeble", not one of the best RPG's I've ever played!" Luckily I pressed on after "Grandad" bit the dust, and the game went on...that was scary, though...laugh.gif
