Does anyone know what the real translations are for Final Fantasy V? I mean, who would name someone Bartz? What kind of a name is that? Lenna, Galuf, and Faris are understandable, but Bartz? Or like, I have heard of Monk or Black Belt. Which is correct? Can anyone shed some light?

Also, I've seen Reina instead of Lenna.

His name was Butz. And everyone in FF has unusual names.
In FFI it was Black Belt, but since FFIII on up, it was monk.

Butz? Not much of a difference. Not everyone has wierd names. I mean, look at FF VII.

Cloud : Alright
Barret : Fine
Tifa : Fine
Aeris : Fine
Red XIII : Erm... goes with who he is.
Cait Sith : A bit on the edge
Yuffie : Alright
Vincent : Fine
Sephiroth : Who cares, Awesome!

That about does it.

Original Japanese ROM, standard translation:
Butz, Lenna, Galuf, Faris, Cara

PSX re-release version:
Bartz, Reina, Galuf, Faris, Krile (or Kururu?)

That particular character class is "Monk" in FFIII and FFV. I don't know about FFI, and I know that in FFIV, it's "Monk" in FFIIus and "Karate" in FFIVj.

As for how the character names are created, I don't really know. Isn't there already a topic on weird Square names? I too have always found most names quite unusual.

I also like playing games with unique names. And if Bartz/Butz bothers you so much, you can change his name at the start.

There's really no such thing as a "Real" translation. Translation is an inexact science, and no two translators are going to take the same thing from the source, especially in a language as different from English as Japanese is.

The only official translation is the one found on FF Anthologies. To say anything is "correct" or "incorrect," though, is a folly.

I did, his name is Idrox. I would put Seinjuu, but because of the six-letter limit, I could only put Seinju. And besides, would people know who I'm talking about if I said Idrox? *Thinks* I wonder If I could put it in my signature...

Well I stick to the origional trans. meaning Lenna, Galuf, Faris, and Cara. Oh and same with the cities: Lix (Rikks), Istory (Easterly), and Worus (Walz). And it is Slydra, not Hydra.

Syldra, actually. You see, I hate it when one of your characters' long-time dragon buddy is named the same thing as a nasty monster in some tower. Hydra was a pain. Syldra kicks arse.

I always liked the Lenna-Galuf-Butz-Cara translation. Yes, translation is an inexact science, but Square should be ashamed at just how much better(i.e. more fluid, enjoyable, etc.) that pre-Anthologies translation is compared to its own.
