Prime time television ratings may have taken a considerable blow from the video gaming industry this season, according to a recent article posted at CNN.com.
Nielsen Media Research reported that viewership among the men 18-34 demographic were down some 10% since last television season. It attributes part of this decline to an expanding video game industry. Indeed, Sony has noted that over half of its prime time (8 p.m. - 11 p.m.) online gaming community consists of men aged 18-34. *** I largely prefer gaming over television, especially online gaming. I see online gaming with friends as a social event, and as so it is far more valuable to me than a television program--or its advertisements. I, too, would much rather play games than watch an idiotic TV show, and IMO, there's not many good shows left.
I say that it serves the greedy television industry right. Up with the greedy electronic gaming industry! This post has been edited by Figaro on 9th March 2004 21:18 -------------------- Wow. 1,000 posts. I miss you all now that I'm in boarding school! ;_; |

Hah, I'm happy to see that the internet in general is taking away from TV. Television has had a near monopoly on home entertainment for far too long. Online games are probably more educational than what's on TV nowadays. Online gaming addiction is an unfortunate problem that's becoming more and more significant in our society everyday, though being a couch potato isn't a good thing either.

I haven't plugged my tv in since I took my ps2 to my grandma's awhile ago. And even when it was plugged in, I didn't turn it on until I went to bed.

Really depends what's on. I'm not the guy who just sits down and keeps flipping channels until he finds something. But if there's a show I like on at 7:00 on tuesdays, i'm gonna plan my schedule around it. I mean, you can play games ANY time. You can only watch that show for a half hour on one day of the week. I have my free time to play games. Easy Choice, head to head :

This don't surprise me at all. There're only a few shows I really watch on TV, so if I ever feel like playing any games, I've pretty much got the time. =P

the only show i watch reguraly is wrestling (mondays at 9 and thursdays at 8) and even then i play my GBA during the commercial breaks (and some boring matches). I definetly woukld attribute the ratings drop to video games. Why just watch the action when u can control it?

Even non-online games would be to blame I would think.Personally I would much rather play video games than watch TV,they took all of the good tv shows off the air anyway...about the only TV shows I watch are anime and even then I don't usually because I own every episode of almost all the anime shows I like...and besides,I get to watch them in Japanese on my dvds...no edits!!!
But as far as TV or Games goes...like someone said earlier...why watch action when you can control it? -------------------- Climhazzard is the timeless evil robot who runs some of the cool stuff at CoN (mostly logging chat, since there are no quizzes at the moment), all the while watching and waiting for his moment to take over the world. -Tiddles |
