Does anyone actually use this command seriously? I never do. What is its function anyway? To me, it doesn't seem to lower the damage that much.

I use it to skip a character's turn when I don't want their command window popping up as I hit the X-button.

Actually, in 8 you could, and it was damn cheap and useful. It completely nulled physical damage. However, it wasn't a default ability, it was a GF-given ability.
As for 6, yeah, if I'm actually not going to use someone for awhile, might as well half the physical damage they take. And you'd notice in something like, say, the first Ultros battle. Especially when Banon gets hit. Def. helps. -------------------- |

yyup! i totally agree with ZED on this one. defend always has had its uses in most games. i really wished that FF1 and FF2 had came with defend. oh well, they were easy anyway.

I find the Defend option quite useless, except for in very particular situations, say when you need only one person to be attacking and the rest to stay put. You could easily hit X, just makes it easier in those situations. Any other situations don't exactly come to mind, basically because they are few and far between.

In FFVI.. eh, never found too much use for the Defend.. unless i was trying to skip a turn without hitting the Triangle button. lol, it DID help with like, dodging attacks easier and recieveing around half the damage from monsters.

Notice that this topic was created in the FF6 forum, so base your poll responses after that fact. I know personally for me, it's different from game to game...I rarely use it in FF6, but I use it a ton in FF4.

Quote Does anyone actually use this command seriously? Does anyone even TAKE this command seriously? I only use it for skipping turns. I found it after I was already, like, halfway through the game, so I didn't see a need for it later, either. On very rare occasions I've used it when a certain character's attack does nothing to contribute to the battle. An example would be Strago's physical attack when you first get him. If Locke kills an enemy with one hit, why have Strago attack that enemy first? So that's my thinking.

i'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet...
when one of your charcters needs to heal badly, you can have them defend while another character uses an item or a spell on the defending charcter, it increaes your chances of that character surviving until the spell goes off. -------------------- <Nealio> Seymour sounds like evil Winnie the Pooh |

Good point DC8. I, however in FF6 in particular, mainly use it to skip turns, and only rarely to protect myself, and I didn't use it that much in 6 anyway.
I like the command, but if I had to choose one or the other, then I'd rather have the triangle button like in FF7 so I can make a character wait a second until it's more oppurtune for that character to go. Any way you slice it, it's not a big deal for me: the game's quality isn't hinged on it. -------------------- Get me off this Disciplinary Committee so I can play any FF except for FF8!!! |

i myself rarely use it, and it is only when i plan to steal something
that is the only use i have for the defend command i'd much rather use abilities, that can whoop some @$$ and totally demolish my opponent, such as the ever wonderful blitz -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

I use it sometimes...might as well take less damage if you're not attacking, eh?

my theory is, dont bother defending, just do all the damage you can before they have a chance to hit you, there should be no reason you need to defend as long as you intend to destroy your target

Usually there is no need for it, but if you don't want that character to attack, you might as well take advantage of the 1/2 damage that it bestows. Also it is great when you are back attacked and your weak characters are suddenly on the front.
