One of these pictures is new, the other has been hanging around a long time waiting to be posted. The subject of both is Edgar. The drawing is part of my 'Blue Pen' series. The other one is a watercolour that's supposed to be more or less a royal portrait.

I thought I'd post these both at the same time of King Edgar.

Hmm... well, on the bluepen one, the eyes look like they are going apart from each other, but otherwaie, pretty good. The watercolor one is excellent. I wonder if he's won enough awards? Very colorful but very good nonetheless.

I was wondering how you do that blue pen without screwing up. Do you sketch it out in pencil first and go over it with pen? Or are you so damn good you don't need to worry about messing up?

And I agree with Figaro the eyes do seem to be slightly off, but I'm not sure if they are actually looking in different directions. Still there is something about them. Edgar's gaze seems to be very life like.

What does it say on that stone he is sitting on?

And yes the water color is excellent. I like the touches of blue you added to his skin.

Those are excellent. I love the watercolour picture of Edgar -- it's probably the best picture of Edgar I've ever seen. It almost seems too elegant for him...I see him so much as a flirt, and in this picture, he looks dignified, calm, collected. But I'm sure that's how he had to be as a king. The ladies can be behind the scenes.

As a general rule, I don't make pencil sketches before I draw with pen. I've described that here when posting before (awhile back maybe). Unless I've stated it, my drawings don't have penciling. The King Edgar portrait took me a bit longer than most watercolour fanarts usually do. This one, I really had to plan out in my head all the various items in his costume. It's harder than you think (especially when doing it just in pen).

I believe when doing a fanart, a key element for me is spontinaity. I just do it. If I wanted to do sketches, underdrawings, and spending hours working on it, I'd be producing some real artwork (instead of working on fanart).

On the 'Blue Pen' drawing of Edgar, yeah, he's a bit crossed eye, eh? 'Tis a consequence of the whole spontinaity thing. In this series (as I've explained before), I was going for the drawing to be explained by line (crosshatching, contour, etc). Sometimes, it's fun to do a monochromatic drawing.

The blue pen drawing is good, but the watercolor kicks arse! It's GREAT! I'm pretty sure Edgar himself would like it.

Well, as I said in chat, I like the Edgar watercolour :-) A bit bright, as you said, sure, but it's still really well done.

I also do like the blue-pen one. Your watercolours are generally more interesting, though.

i absolutely love the water colour drawing. The detail is amazing considering the medium. He seems very sad, but IMO that just makes the piece better!

I really like the blue-pen drawing. It seems more realistic. The watercolor is awesome too, don't get me wrong, but I just enjoy realistic drawing more. You're a very good artist, Kame. Keep up the work!

These are great. Both drawings shifted my beliefs that Sabin and Edgar were in their late 20s : with these drawings in mind, I can now imagine them older. For my part, I think that the blue pen one is incredible...bravo.

Great Kame, I'm glad you posted these here. You did a very good job on them and was hoping you'd show everyone else. The first one offers a creative pose on the tombstone like that and the second one has lots of pretty colors.
