Remember how you can optionally get Shadow at two points in the WoB?
1) Sabin's scenario. Can leave in the middle of battle, but will leave at the waterfall. 2) Kohlingen for 3000GP. Will leave in the middle of battle. So my question is: When you hire him, what is the latest point you can have Shadow? Is there a scene like at the waterfall? -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

Sort of. When you get to the waterfall and your party splits to talk about jumping, Shadow comes out first and says the same little bit that he would if he leaves in the middle of a batle, then leaves.
EDIT: I'm sorry, I thought you were asking if there was a scene around the waterfall, not one similar to the one at the waterfall. Damn the ambiguous "like". This post has been edited by io_rage on 11th January 2004 17:52 |

If you hire him before you go to the opera, he will leave you during the opera and you are stuck with three characters all the way through Vector.

I've had him leave at Zozo as well. Thankfully I remembered to unequip him, or he would have made off with one of my espers.
(Thankfully, the "Unequip all members not in your party" option on the airship got me the one I left on Celes.) |

It don't. That's how I lose some of my best equip and espers for some time (Shadow, Celes).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think leaving characters can take your Espers. I've seen several people cry about it in this thread, but I can't recall it being possible. For one, wouldn't it mean that you lose all equipped espers when you jump from the floating continent? Someone please clarify.

Tere are only 3 instances where you 'lose' access to equipment/espers. Note: the 'unequip all members not now in your party' option on the Blackjack still will NOT recover these items. A good way to 'check' which chars are 'in' your party is to go to any shop and buy an item, but don't confirm it. In the lower section of the screen, it will display all the chars in your party (ie all those people still on the Blackjack). 95% of the time Shadow will not be in your 'party'. Hence, you cannot 'unequip' him using the Blackjack feature. This displayed 'party' is also the group whose level is averaged when calculating level for newly joining chars.
1) Right before Barren Falls, when Shadow leaves. When Shadow leaves he takes all the equip with him. You do NOT have any Espers yet, so you can't lose any. 2) When you lose Shadow in Thamasa (burning house event). All items (Espers included) are gone until you pick him up again on the Floating Island. This is where I am in the game right now. I am about to go to the Floating Island and regain him. Note: you may lose Shadow earlier (after Nikeah, and before Thamasa), depending on how long you do random battles with him. But he will show up again in Thamasa. Possible spoilers: highlight to view to rescue you from the enclosing Balloons. 3) When Gau is LEAPed on the Veldt. If he has an Esper equiped, it is gone, until you recover him on the Veldt. |

Answer to the original quesiton: If you hire Shadow when you first get to Kohlingen, he leaves when you complete the Zozo thing and get back Terra. If you hire him after that, I don't know when he leaves.
A comment on Detah's "conditions of esper loss": you do get back the esper you equip on Shadow for the Thamasa incident right after he leaves. You only lose his equipment. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! I'm pretty sure if you do Sabin's scenario first Shadow is much less likely to leave early, if at all. If you do Locke's scenario first he will probably take off way before the waterfall. This happened to me one time when I gave him the genji glove. Hoo boy was I pissed. Didn't get that SOB back 'til Thamasa.

What's weird to me is, I DIDN'T hire him in Kohlingen, nor did I even see him, and I don't even remember him making away with my good equipables. Oh well. Sux for all of you that I'm stupid! No wait...

Well, he's in the pub in Kohlingen, and you have to have less than 4 characters in your party in order to recruit him. I never do this, and so I never "recruited" him.

Interestingly, that (at Kohlingen) was JUST the point in the game when I decided "I might get a new character, and I'll want to use him/her, so why don't I only take 3 characters?" and then I found Shadow. So I hired him.
I did Terra's scenario, then Sabin's, then Locke's, and Shadow left me in the middle of a battle after the ghost train but before the waterfall. It seems like he likes to do that. EDIT: If you've hired Shadow at Kohlingen, save (or save state, if you play on an emulator) often on the world map, because it seems if you step on certain "grid-squares" and fight a battle there, Shadow WILL necessarily leave. If you want to keep him, try to walk in a different direction, or onto a different place. I'm not sure if he does this in Zozo, but I don't think so.
