i dont know of all on the system, so this is not a poll. I am pretty sure that this topic isnt anywhere, because i have never seen it. Anywho, lets muddle on with the board:
Although paling in comparison to the SNES on RPGs, the Sega did have a few great ones. In fact, they had a couple games that were fantastic to play and even better then games on SNES. Two that i can think of are (1) Phantasy Star 4 and (2) Shining Force--2. these are two of the funnest games i have ever played. Can't really elaborate on that. What do you guys think? -------------------- once you can accept yourself, you will never be alone |

I think, you need to explore alot more SEGA games
![]() Shining in the Darkness Shining Force Shining Force 2 Shining Force CD (damn thing glitches though ![]() Phantasy Star 4 (best of the lot, dont bother with 3 'cuz it blows IMO) Phantasy Star 2 (much improved compared to the original, still fails to 4) Sorceror's Kingdom (has to be one of the most addictive, lmao, im writing up a semi-guide for it aswell) Beyond Oasis (aka Story of Thor, very nice animation and battle system) Sword of Vermillion (very FPS-ish actually, lots of mazes and hard-to-get-used-to battle system, heh, SFX/Music are top quality though.) Give'em a try, i can sort out any transfers but eh, i know the Admins dont like rommage here lol. |

Mine would be Skies of Arcadia, I think thats a sega product. If it isn't, my second choice would have to be Phantasy Star Online.

I remember this Sega RPG called Warsong. It was sort of half Tactics style, half Civilization style battle. I thought it was pretty good. That's really the only RPG I ever played on Sega, but I never owned one of those things anyway, and only knew a couple people who did.

There was a really fun Sega RPG called Beyond Oasis that I really liked. I don't remember much of ANYTHING about the game, it's been so long...but I remember really liking it, if that counts for anything.

The only Sega system I really explored games with is the DreamCast, so here we go:
Grandia II Excellent and realistic battle system (shows how ATB would work in real life) Wonderful and extensive story line. Played the "bad religion" card, but not in a way I've ever seen. Doesn't have so many Side Quests you get distracted from the story. Character Skills are kept unique to each character. Time Stalkers Not much of a story line. Present, but goes unnoticed, sacrificed for gameplay (and well worth it). Huge. Focuses on item and skill collection. Never gets boring. Phantasy Star Online Also huge. Story not sacrificed as much as TS, though. Excellent battle system. You walk around and hit buttons to attack the enemies, but the way skills and techniques are worked in is perfection. What I hear about the GCN and XBox re-releases, they messed with it in a real bad way. I'm pretty sure you meant the Genesis, but all I ever really played on it was Sonic. -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

This is mostly seconding other people...
For true RPGing goodness--Phantasy Star IV. Shining Force and Skies of Arcadia are also excellent. Beyond Oasis I JUST got the other day. It's an action RPG instead of party-based. Even for a Genesis game--wow. The graphics and animation look good even today, the music is excellent also. Ali could've been Sega's version of Link and BO could have been their Legend of Zelda. However, Sega's tendency to put their marketing behind crappy licensed games and other lameness killed that. It got some print ads, no TV, I don't even think much was said in Sega Visions. Sega should have hyped the S.O.B. out the wazoo and gave it several sequels. (I heard it got one sequel--under what title? Anyone know?) Ali's more diverse than the mutant elf ever was; he's able to jump, duck, and run (he can attack while doing any of those). He can use his basic dagger plus swords, bows and arrows, etc to attack but can also fight hand to hand (well, foot-to-head ![]() For what it's worth--I hated Grandia. *shrug* Also--Warsong I heard a lot of people liked. I don't, but it's a high demand one that's very hard to find. If you find it used, pick it up. If you don't like it you can sell it online and not lose a cent. Incidentally, Warsong is the only game in the Langriesser (sp?) series to make it Stateside. This post has been edited by AndrewTS on 13th December 2003 12:32 |

My favorite Sega RPG was the Magic Knight Rayearth game.
Maybe it's not RPG. I dunno. That's the reason I bought a sega to begin with. Forgot one:
It was considered one of the best RPGs on Sega CD (not named Lunar) but didn't really get much attention, yet I've heard good reviews for it--Y's (pronounced "Ee's" I think). I can't vouch for it from personal experience, but I hear that the whole collection is going to be re-released for PS2 soon. |

My favorite series is definitely Lunar. I loved it on the Playstation, as well. The characters were great, the plot was involving, and the battle system was a fun spin on the old favorite. Plus, it had those weird flying cat-dragon things. Yay!
The Phantasy Star series is also great. Phantasy Star 2 was brilliant for its time, and Phantasy Star 4 refined the winning formula into a whole new level of excellence. Many dislike Phantasy Star 3 (particularly because it wasn't a "true" Phantasy Star game), but I sort of liked the whole alternate universes thing. It definitely wasn't up to the caliber of its siblings, but it's far from the soulless, bastardized half-game that many make it out to be. I've had regrettably little experience with the Shining Force series, but from what I've seen it had an RPG/strategy turn that was ahead of its time. I've also heard great things about Skies of Arcadia. Oh, and if Snatcher counts, it's definitely near the top of my list. Sure, the Sega CD sucked, but Snatcher was reason enough to get it, in my opinion. -------------------- "I always have a quotation for everything - it saves original thinking." ~Dorothy L. Heh, i forgot to mention one.. and that one is;
Landstalker: Treasure of King Nole Its actually a RPG/RTS kinda game.. you got the whole 45/135/225/315 degree movement, plus the jumping and different levels where you can walk.. but, its pretty good. You get to slash stuff on the run (Zelda style lol) and gather money from the guys you slay.. bwuhaha, its good fun and the Music/SFX is top quality for the Genesis as per normal. |

I loved Shining Force 2. I only vaguely remember playing it when I was 7 or 8 years old, but I remember getting a secret character (he's some kind of turtle/dragon that you rescue from a burning village...I think...) and some Cid-like character gives you a transport/tank? I don't know. I just remember it was cool!

More of a "digital comic" or "graphic adventure" than an RPG, actually. Sega CD didn't suck, it's just that their good games were far fewer in proportion to the crap. Plus, a lot of its best titles are difficult to find. Landstalker I forgot, but I think it doesn't hold up as well as a lot of the other Sega stuff. yes lunar was a fantastic game. but that is sega cd. not the ordinary game. i am talking about the average sega. for example, if i said favorite super nintendo game, i wouldnt expect everyone to talk abou games on the gamecube or NES.
besides, lunar and lunar 2 were vastly superior on the playstation. -------------------- once you can accept yourself, you will never be alone |

There is no such individual system "Sega". Sega is a manufacturer. You could mean any of the following:
Sega Master System Sega Game Gear Sega Mega Drive a.k.a. Genesis Sega Mega CD a.k.a. Sega CD Sega 32X Sega Saturn Sega Dreamcast And probably one or two others I forgot. If you meant a specific system, please clarify and edit your first post and topic title. Anything on Sega CD is a perfect answer to the topic question as it stands. I played all these over at my friends house, they were all good fun, I have seen the Grandias and Shining Forces played and they didn't seem as "nice" to me as Phantasy Star1-3.....oh well, opinions are forever conflicting. -------------------- Those with no names know no bounds |

Sega CD didn't suck, it's just that their good games were far fewer in proportion to the crap. Plus, a lot of its best titles are difficult to find. Yeah, I was wondering about that. It hearkens back to the days of point-and-click adventures, with a few action sequences in between. So I guess it wouldn't really be accurate to call it an RPG. I guess I just had to fit a Snatcher plug in there somehow. And I agree that the best stuff is near impossible to find, mostly because the failure of the Sega CD was so decisive. It's hard sometimes to even find the crappy games, much less the tiny fraction of masterpieces that so frequently escape the public notice. -------------------- "I always have a quotation for everything - it saves original thinking." ~Dorothy L. I haven't played a lot of them, but it's reassuring to see there are so many that you folks like. I'll try them some time.
![]() Shining Force, with its child-friendly gameplay and story, was a huge hit with me - especially the 2nd one. It was so fun to play and has tremendous replay value. P.S. The turtle character The_Pink_Nu1 is thinking about is named Kiwi, but you automatically are able to rename him just like you can your main character. The "Cid" character is named Rhode and he ends up driving the Caravan you find in some ruins. With a secret item, Janet or Elric (the Elven Archers) can be upgraded to be a tank driver just like Rhode. Well since no one has mentioned it, I wll bring up my favorite rpg of all time. Since it is a sega rpg this looks like the right place. This RPG is titled "Panzer Dragoon Saga", a game that graced the cd drive of a sega saturn already half buried in its grave. I noticed someone metioned Magic Knight Rayearth. Panzer Dragoon Saga appeared at about the same time as Magic Knight Rayearth on the Saturn. Both rpgs, both fun, and both unknown to a great extent.

I'd have to go with Shining force 2, since it was kinda the onlt RPG that I played on that system. I was about 11 at the time and got stuck very early in the game but hey it was still good.
