Because no one can sit at the computer all day! I'm sure there's plenty of people in here who do various types of physical activities. If so, what do you do, and what's your motivation?

I walk on the treadmill and do crunches because I want to lose weight. So far, it's working - lost four pounds last week.

I play football and basketball regularly, plus I work outdoors about 50% of the time as part of my job with the park service. I don't lift as much as I ought to, but I run a 3.75-mile trail at the park where I work at least once or twice a week.

I play football in amateur tournaments and occasionally practice with the team beforehand, nothing regular. If I have a week where I can't sleep I'll go for a run along the beach at night. Sometimes I'll run before I have a week where I can't sleep if I'm having a good planning spree. I smoke an immense amount of cigarettes but it's never affected how much I can run, only how long it takes to get my breath back, which is a solid 20 minutes right now. I love swimming and I'll do that as much as I can. Basically I do everything I can to avoid the gym.

I pole dance
![]() They have pole dance classes near my house that are incredibly fun. I have a pole at home I can work on, too, which I'm on several times a week, in addition to classes several times a week. It's honestly not nearly as sexy as you'd think it would be, haha. It's gotten me in pretty good shape without me realizing I'm working out, and I like that. Plus, it's a great way to see progress because it means whether or not you can do certain moves. Before this, I'd pretty much just go on brisk walks a lot. I was in marching band in high school. -------------------- You're telling me that there's no hope. I'm telling you you're wrong. |

I used to go to the gym 3 days a week, and play pick-up games of basketball, volleyball, and futbol (they were regular, once-a-week gigs), but my schedule this semester is insane. Thus, I mostly sit on my butt and read for class or type assignments for class, with the exception of the weekly basketball game (and the occasional volleyball game).

I used to run a lot, and play soccer as frequently as possible. Winter has sort of put a cramp on that, however, so lately I've been using the gym on campus every so often, mainly for cardio work. (but not nearly frequently enough to be beneficial at all and far too inconsistently because I'm lazy as all hell in the winter.) It doesn't help that I'm already bone-thin, so outside of wanting to be able to be able to play soccer, I have little to no motivation to buff up or work out very much.

I do a fair amount of distnace training: running, biking and swimming. I did my first triathlon early last summer, and I was immediately hooked. So now I'm training for another event this coming summer. I've always been a bit of a runner and I've always done casual biking and swimming, but until about a year ago I had never biked or swam for the sake of training. I'm still getting used to that, especially the swimming, which is my least favorite. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! I bike about 6 miles each way to school almost every weekday, and sometimes to other places on the weekends. It's a lot more fun than sitting in traffic, I get some exercise, parking's a breeze, it's better for the environment, and I save money on gas. Win several times over.
I used to train pretty heavily in Isshinryu karate (since 1995), but I just don't have the time to practice much anymore. I need to make that more of a priority, because I can feel myself getting rusty and less fit. UCLA has a damn fine gym; I should really take advantage of it more. |

I run and use an elliptical.
Though, I tend not to run on cold days. The area I run around is very breezy and a strong cold wind really knocks the wind out of you. Can't wait for Spring. |

Alright, anyone who has answered, I have a question!
How LONG have you been doing what you're doing? What were the results? Have you lost weight or toned up? What was your intention? What's been the most effective routine? I'm still pretty new to this stuff, to be honest! I know how physically fit I WASN'T before starting dance, and I like that I've seen actual results. I wanted to be more fit in a way that I could enjoy. I could never get into running or pushups, as I get distracted easily, hahaha. I could do ellipticals, but with me moving around a lot the access to one wasn't constant. Living in an apartment also means space is a factor! WHen I first started pole dance, they had a cartoon-type picture of a chick upside down on the wall, and I rolled my eyes thinking, "No one can really do that." I assumed I'd learn a few cute tricks, and then head out if they wanted me to do something crazy like that. It just seemed so unrealistic to me, who could barely suffer through a pull up. What I didn't realize was that day by day, I was getting stronger, and by the time I needed to learn to invert (go upside down), it wasn't nearly as hard as I thought ![]() -------------------- You're telling me that there's no hope. I don't really have a set routine. If I'm running usually it's along the beach at night because it's empty and the sea is refreshing. But then I might run during the day or run somewhere else. With swimming I just do it when I feel like I need to come up with ideas, or think or get away. I've been doing this since I was about 16, but it's not regular. I've been playing football since I was old enough to walk, and I've played a lot of other sports too outside of school. I played a lot of squash (racquetball?) last year. Football lasts either an hour or 90 minutes, I run for about an hour, and swim for over an hour, usually. Any more and it would be too tiring and defeat the point, or take too long.
Physical exercise for me is about mind and spirit, I never feel like I need to lose weight or tone up or anything. I play sport for fun and satisfaction, exercise for rejuvenation. Like I said before I'll exercise to tire myself out for going to sleep. That's actually one of the main reasons I'd do it. I suppose the results are always positive. My body doesn't really change when I'm more active. I can definitely see a change in endurance when I'm more active but I don't really care, I've never had a fitness problem playing football. If I did I would probably run more. There's a lot to be said for going out and running, walking or swimming alone if you're stuck on a project of some sort. To answer directly, I've spent years playing sports on and off and running or swimming. The results are good for my mental wellbeing, I haven't noticed much change in my body. As for effective routine, I suppose if you're exercising to get away or think it's maybe best to do it when it's needed. A routine probably wouldn't help. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

Before I moved away from Boston, I was playing soccer at least once a week for eight months out of the year. When I wasn't too sore from my matches, I was running on an elliptical three to five miles two or three times a week (can't really do treadmills or road running because my knees are pretty shot).
When I moved, it got a lot harder, because the gym wasn't as convenient - 25 minute round trip was hard to fit into my schedule, cop out as that is. I was still going a few days a week, but then I moved into my new house which is even further away, and I haven't been since. I'm trying to save up enough to get an elliptical in my house, but the baby and our need for a new car to haul the baby is really getting in the way of that. That said, I think I might have found a new soccer team today, and I'm going to give them a try in about two hours for an indoor game. I'm going to die. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

I trained all through highschool, gradually switching over from weights and football to endourance and track. That said, I've been quite physically active for probably five years now, though I only really started serious distance work about a year ago. Training for distance is definitely more time consuming and can be much more boring, but for me personally I've found that it's also more rewarding.
Quote Though, I tend not to run on cold days. The area I run around is very breezy and a strong cold wind really knocks the wind out of you. Can't wait for Spring. Yeah, the winter can be a downer for exercise. I'm not a fan of treadmills or elipticals, so I tried to run outside through winter as much as I could, though running in sweats doesn't quite hit the spot. The more obnoxious part about the cold months for me is that I can't do any outdoor biking, which confines me to a stationary bike inside the gym here on campus. That's fine for a leg workout and all, but it's considerably different as far as form is concerned, especially when compared to the bike I'll be riding for my triathlons this summer. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! I was gonna answer this, but it seems kind of unfair, in that I have to workout every day just to do what it is I do.
I guess recreational activity is fine though. I play basketball 3 or 4 times a week and run daily. I do body weight exercises daily as well. When I do feel like lifting, it's always old school. I'm a firm believer in the Rippetoe school of fitness: Eat solid, lift heavy things without using machines to do so. I've never been a fan of all the nonsense that people spew in the fitness industry though. I mean some of these things are just ridiculous. People keep buying the stuff though, so they may as well keep shelling it out. -------------------- This is a webcomic and gaming blog where I rant about nonsense. Enjoy. Did I mention I lift? No? I might not be quite as avid as my roommate or as Gabe or anybody else here seems to be, but it helps keep the weight off without looking like a stick. I also do a lot of walking, biking, and some jogging when I can (preferably outside, of course).
Still need to work on the diet, though : / ... This post has been edited by Galsic on 20th March 2011 13:57 -------------------- |

I used to do some sports (most notably badminton) but not any more. I simply didn't have enough time for it. I do some training myself at home with a training bicycle and stuff.

Alright so, I might need advice! It's kind of diet-focused, but also ties in with physical activity.
First off, I gotta point out that at no point did I think I was fat, or do I! The only thing is, numbers don't lie and I know how much weight I've put on in the past few years [in my defense I grew 2 inches!], and I've been wanting to see what I can do to change that. I wanted to take pole dancing classes for fun, and they had half the class devoted to exercises, which, as time went on, got pretty fun too, since I got better and it all came easier! I always knew I was out of shape, but now that I knew what it felt like to be more in shape, I decided to pursue that. And then I did a few BMI type-tests, and according to them, not only am I overweight, but could lose 40 pounds and be considered healthy [I'm not sure that's right for my body, but that's what their formula said]. I knew my diet was terrible, so I targeted that and have been eating a lot of yogurts and fruits, and staying away from white carbs. I've been working at it, and plus some of the things I've been doing I've plateaued at kind of, so I pushed myself harder to get a better workout. I've lost five pounds since then, and any time I think of eating something I also think, "I've already lost _ pounds. Do I really want to mess that up?" And for the most part, put it down. And if the scale says I gained weight, I work out harder. If I lost weight, I work out with more energy. Although I think I'm doing some positive things, I'm not sure that that's completely healthy, and I'm looking for a happy medium. What do you guys do in terms of food/guilty pleasures [Dr Pepper for me!]? If you've ever tried to eat healthier, what was the main thing to cut out? Rangers51 has mentioned that cardio's the way to lose weight, which I've been working on big time. It just sucks because I"m always active at weird hours, so I can't just go running in the dead of the night! hahaha. So I'm stuck indoors. One thing I tried with sodas, was that I made a deal with myself that if I drank an entire glass of water, I could have one soda. Doing that made me full faster, so I couldn't drink nearly as much soda anyway, but I still got to enjoy what little I got. I actually got pretty good at that habit. I still do it at restaurants, but at home I often just go to the fridge without thinking about it because that's easier. Or lately, after working out I make sure to avoid the sodas for a few hours because I have all those feel-good endorphins! -------------------- You're telling me that there's no hope. I'm telling you you're wrong. |
