This may be an easy question for those who have hacks and the like, but I don't and I'm curious. If you choose to make Ragnarok into a sword instead of an esper, is there another way to learn ultima? I've heard something about the cursed shield teaching it, but I'm hesitant to try it until I'm sure I can learn ultima. If the shield has nothing to do with it, what does the cursed shield do? Thanks.

The cursed shield can be uncursed after wearing it for 256 battles. I still never can remember if it's 255 or 256, lol. After the curse is dispelled, the shield it becomes, the Paladin Shield, teaches Ultima x1.

Terra also learns Ultima at level 99.

256

The ones R51 mentioned are it (other than hacks and cheat codes to get the Ragnarok Esper)

Ok, thanks to both of you. At that point it would be very worthwhile to get the sword and wager it for Illumina.

Um...at the risk of sounding amaturish, where do you get the cursed shield again? I've gotten it before, but I'm starting again after like 7 years since I last played it, and I don't want to miss it.

In the locked house in Narshe in the WoR. You have to have Locke in your party to pick the lock to get it.
