There lives a guy (let's give him a name at random, like "Pandabear") who is an absolute fiend for cigars. Not being overly concerned with issues of sanitation, he likes to scour the alleys to find discarded cigar butts. Pandabear has determined that for every 5 cigar butts he recovers, he can combine them to make one whole cigar. Yesterday, he got lucky and found 75 cigar butts. How many cigars can he enjoy from that batch?

There seems to be some sort of trick in the wording to the question if 15 isn't the answer.
Either A) There is none he can enjoy from that batch he found, and he needs to make some before he can enjoy them. So 0 from those butts alone C) No where does it say he smokes them. Maybe he CAN make 1 out of every 5 butts he finds, but it doesn't mean he DOES. Back to the last part of B, maybe it is his job to just clean them up. I'm going with 0 on this one.... *shrugs* This post has been edited by Fadien on 20th April 2004 05:30 -------------------- "And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped” -Sir Bedevere the Wise |

Heh, I apologize if the wording seemed ambiguous or tricky, that was not my intention. Let me clarify:
1. "Enjoying" a cigar means smoking it, in this context. 2. Let's assume he's compulsive. If he's got 5 cigar butts, he can't help but make one whole cigar out of them and then smoke it. PB78 |

He can make 15 whole new cigars, and then with the butts of these, he can make 3 more. Then he's screwed, and have a bad breath for about a week, I guess |

Here's a little riddle :
I have no begining. I have no end. Like every member of my kind, if I stand, I can beat some, and get beaten by all the others. But if by chance I ever lie down, None then can beat me Who am I? |

Quote (Mr Thou @ 22nd April 2004 10:09) Who am I? This is a wild guess, but is it a domino? When you put them in a line, it knockes some down and gets knocked down by all the others, and if you put it down flat on the table, it can't be knocked over. No idea about the "no end" bit. -------------------- "Luck is my middle name. Put the dominoes in a closed-curve chain. Then the chain has neither beginning nor end.

Not a domino. But it could fit, with a little stretch.
A little hint : the first and second phrases are about the shape of it. |

Any loop would do. Hula hoop, jewelry ring, steel ring, O-ring, etc....

Since no one guessed it for 3 days now, I'll answer it : it's the number 8.
When you write it, no beggining and no end ; like any whole number, it is higher than some and lower than others. If you lay it down (turn it 90°), it becomes the symbol of infinity, thus cannot be matched by any number. Maybe the translation, and the fact that I was told this riddle many years ago (I may have forgotten a bit of it...), made it difficult to guess. Anyway, next riddle is open. I know that this post may be not really on topic, but I have to praise you, Mr Thou, for that riddle. That's one of the best riddles I've ever heard, and it just flows so perfectly--that it's so simple, and it makes perfect sense, yet it's also so ambiguous in its words that it's quite difficult to tell what the answer is.
I'll be telling this to friends soon. Despite my sounding like a Buy Owner commercial, thanks, Mr Thou! -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Ugh, I'm so out of riddles.
How about this one? There's a right cylindrical glass of water in an empty room, and it looks half full (go away, pessimists), but you're not sure. How can you determine if it's half full or not, using no tools? I hope this riddle hasn't been asked. Gridlock is sucking up all of my time, so I'm too lazy to go back and check. -------------------- Little miss Muffet, sat on her tuffet, Eating her curds and... WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! |

Pick it up, and throw it in someone's eyes. Measure the length of scream and how long it takes them to see properly again.

Tilt the glass so that the water is just touching one of the bottom edges of the glass. If the water either spills out of the glass, or dows not reach the opposite edge on top, it is not exactly half. If it just reaches the opposite edge, and does NOT spill out, it is half full.
