Continue at that patern, and Ranger shook 51-100's hand (50 people), and didn't shake 0-50's hands (51 people) or his own (1). 50 people he did shake (answer), 51 he didn't, 1 as himself, that accounts for all 102 people at the party. Instead of an equals sign, draw the line through it so the equation reads "5+5+5 does not equal 550".

I have something really rare and valuable that I can only send to you by mail. I have to put it in a chest, which is fitted with spaces for multiple locks. Now, I have a set of locks, and the set of keys corresponding to each of those locks. However, you have none of the keys to my locks. How can I send you the chest safely?
Note: I cannot mail you the key, because I am afraid it will get lost during delivery. The chest must be locked, because otherwise, someone might open the chest and take it. I will never see you in person, so I cannot give you the key then. Also, no locksmith or lockpick can open my locks. It MUST be opened with my key. well, if the chest is able to be *fitted* with an extra lock, then you could send friend the chest, lcoked, and he could fit the chest with his own unopenable lock to which he ahs the key. the he sneds it back to you, you open your locks, and send it back to him.

killing ymself, too, can't seem to think of a very good one...let's go with the poison tasting, then.
there is a king who has 10 criminals in his dungeon. he also has 1000 bottles of wine. however, one of the criminals in the dungeon got there because he poisoned one of the bottles on wine (with an odorless, colourless, tasteless poison). now, this poison takes 4 weeks to kill the victim, up until which time no symptoms are visible. we also have a very intelligent king -- he is going to use his 10 prisoners to determine which bottle of wine is poisoned, and it will only take him five weeks. what was the king's ingenious plan? edit -- "four weeks" is not exact, and "five weeks" is only because of it is some random time longer than "four weeks." Assuming that by 4 weeks, you mean exactly 4 weeks, to the hour, this is my solution. Each prisoner tastes some of one bottle at every hour of the day he is awake, which we assume to be 15 hours. This means, one at 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 o'clock. They continue this for 7 days. 15 bottles a day, times 10 prisoners = 150 bottles a day total. 150 bottles, times 7 days = 1050 bottles total. Thus, each bottle will be tested before the week is up. Since it is within a week, if the very last bottle is poisonous (drunk on the 7th day), the king will find out before the 5 weeks are up. Each bottle is numbered and time of consumption as well as drinker are recorded. Thus, if the poisonous bottle is drunk by Prisoner 3 on the 6th day at 7:00 PM, he will die exactly 4 weeks later, on day 34, at 7:00 PM. That's all I can think of.

let me give a hint: there are two methods for solving this problem (that are actually the same method, but two seperate ways of looking at it). the hint is that one of the methods should be fairly obvious to CS junkies, while the other method is for math nerds. think really hard about what we can do with 10 prisoners...we have 1000 bottles of wine...

That's cool with me, I'm out of riddles.
So, here's my solution to your riddle after your comment about CS junkies. Label each bottle in 10 digit binary instead of decimal. So bottle one is 00 0000 0001, bottle two is 00 0000 0010, bottle 37 is 00 0001 0011, etc. Each digit represents a prisoner. Now, if the bottle (now labeled in binary) has a 1 in a certain digit, give it to that prisoner. So prisoner one would drink from bottle one, prisoner two drinks from bottle two, prisoners one, two, and five drink from bottle 37, etc. After four weeks, take the prisoners who died and the prisoners who didn't, and transform it into a binary number. So if after four weeks, prisoners ten, eight, three, and two died, you would get 10 1000 0110. Transform that back to decimal, and you have your poisoned bottle. I think that works... and by the way, why did you say it would take five weeks (or a random amount of time greater than four weeks)? yep, that's the correct answer. the mathematical solution is taking 10C(0-10) for 2^10 or 1024 total possible combinations of prisoners and assign bottles in the same method. i said it would take more than four weeks because the prisoners would not die for four weeks and obviously it could not be any shorter than four weeks. five weeks is non-specific, it's just to show that the prisoners will have had the *chance* to die (by the four weeks) but also that there isn't just an infinite amount of time for the solution.
