It's the Empire's "Gaurdian" machine. Nothing can help you if you encouter it at that point in the game as all attacks will do 0 damage and you can't run away. Sorry, you have to go back to your last save. A little bit later on there is another point where you can fight it, which

is when you are controling general Leo. Instead of attacking Kefka attack the mtek armor behind him to face the gaurdian again. You still won't be able to kill it or run away though, so be warned! It is funny however that being killed by the gaurdian constitutes a game over, but being killed by Kefka who is two steps next to him merely advances the story.

...Yes, you can run away from battle with Guardian that first time...it's the only thing you can do then, really. ô.o

But guess what, you CAN actually win the Guardian battle in Vector!

You'll need at least two characters, a muddle spell and a smoke bomb. I can't give the exact description how to do it as I don't remember, but master ZED knows more. He was the one who told us (or, at least me tongue.gif ).

Yeah, that's right.

Once you're in battle, have one of your characters cast Muddle on someone else, but before or during the cast, have your victim choose to use a Smoke Bomb. Muddle won't change what that character uses, but will change the intended target. That will cause them to throw the Smoke Bomb at the Guardian, forcing it to run away and giving you the win. Obviously, you need at least two characters to perform this technique, so Leo still has no way to defeat the Guardians in Thamasa.

Also, the game is not equipped to handle a win against the Guardian, so the game will proceed as if you lost.

This technique can be done in ANY battle where no living monsters carry the Can't Run property, not just against Guardian, although since it by default targets an entire party, it will get rid of all living creatures, so either it rids you of all monsters or it does absolutely nothing (even monsters can't run without Escape if any living beast carries the Can't Run property. Strange, eh?). Even if all of the monsters run though, you still get Magic Points at the end of battle, so the technique is not without use. The only downside is that monsters still use their final attacks. While this means Intangir will bombard your bomber with Meteo, this does mean that Doom Gaze will still cough up Bahamut and be counted by the game as deceased if he ran away in this fashion, which is a rather fitting way for him to die, I guess. smile.gif
Edit
Put the post in a spoiler tag, since it was done in the previous post.
