I never really was a Sega fan, but the kids across the street always had a Sega system (starting with the Master system, then Genesis and finally Saturn). So, I got to play lots of Sega stuff by going over their house.

Back about 8yrs ago or so, I remember it coming out, then vanishing almost as quickly as it appeared.

I have heard several explanations as to why died (stuff leaking out?).

Did anyone ever own one or play any good games for it?

It seems this is the system that never really was....... eh.gif

Well, I haven't played Saturn like, forever, but I remember this one game called, I think it was, "Clockwork Knight", or something like that. You were this weird guy in armor, but you (and the armor) were made out of gears and pendelums and stuff. Other than that it was like a side-scolling action-puzzle game, kinda like Earthworm Jim (another awesome game, but not for the Saturn, I don't think).

My cousin had one of these systems for a while, and that's where I played it.

I think the sega saturn was really, just another system ahead of its time, that most couldn't afford, like the neogeo.

If I recall correctly, it had roughly the same capabilities as the PSX, which also came out about the same time. So, it had its peer in the PSX, in a way.

Never had played (let alone even seen) a NeoGeo. Heard they rocked. Heh, the site most famous for weird and off colour flash videos and games (New Grounds) started off as a NeoGeo site.

The Major contributor to the Saturn's demise was the Sony Playstation. Though really Sega slit its own throat. During the 16-bit era the only systems you really had to mull over for purchase were the Snes or Genesis(Megadrive). Sega thought it could take the lead by introducing the 32X a 32bit enhancement for the Genesis much like the Mega CD(If anyone remembers that). The 32X wasn't really hyped and only Sega fans knew of its release. When Sony announced the Playstation and that they were entering the console market. Unlike Nintendo, Sega panicked, and directed all of its attention to making a system to counter the Playstation. Thus the Saturn was born. But being rushed beyond belief, the Saturn did not compare to the Playstation, barely being able to compete. Sony signed numerous contracts attaining a wide vareity of games on release only to build the empire further.

Another key contributor was the loveable Sonic the Hedgehog. But why you ask of factors, wouldn't Sonic save the Saturn? The answer no he didn't, Sonic Team who created all the worthy Sonic games we all love, we busy with Nights. Straying from releasing a Sonic game themselves the task fell to Sega of America who created Sonic Xtreme but due to Yuki Naka(pres of Sonic Team)'s dislike for Sega of America he did not assist them at all. And at the Tokyo game convention Sonic Xtreme fell way below standards. Sega postponed it, though it was really canned indefinately. Without the flagship mascot to market the system disgruntled Sega fans turned to Sony ignoring Sega from then on.

I have a Sega Saturn still, and it's an awesome, underrated system. Allow me to mention why I feel so.

The Saturn is the best system for great 2-D fighters next to the Neo. Nightwarriors, SF Collection, SF Alpha 1 and 2 and many others are well represented on the Saturn. The Saturn with a RAM cart is capable of perfect arcade translations. Vampire Savior (which has a full english code!), X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Superheroes, Street Fighter Alpha 3 and several King of Fighters games are examples of the latter.

NiGHTs, a game that everyone tells me is fantastic, but I can't possibly enjoy because I am the single worst player of that game ever in the history of the world. I can't get past the first stage. I suck horribly at it.

One of the best wrestling video games of all time, Fire Pro S, is on Saturn, and has an awesome create character mode, up to six-player play, and with a memory cart/converter you can make tons of created people. Plus, the game by default has a huge lineup of wrestlers from around the world.

Guardian Heroes--fantastic game. Fighters' Megamix. The Sega Saturn had tons of great import games, and some rare games like Radiant Silvergun and Burning Rangers are supposed to be really good.

The Saturn has weaker 3-D capabilities than the PS but is superior with 2D. Sega sucked at marketing, didn't even try to play to the system's strengths, and the $100 price difference and weak US game line ups hurt the Saturn in America, and was a big blow to Sega.

I think the Saturn was a far better system to the N64 (as far as games), but lots of stupid mistakes by Sega killed it early. It's a shame, because if Sega was competent enough the PS/Saturn battle could have been reminscent of the 16-bit wars.
