Let's see if we can get some interesting stories from this topic. Talk about injuries that put you in the hospital.

2 years ago I had a facial infection. First one of my upper front teech started hurting badly. When I say badly I mean it was killing me. I got an emergency perscription for pain killers, and while I was waiting for them at the drug store I could hardly remain standing. I couldn't think about anything but the pain. The pain killers worked at first but then became too weak so the dentist prescribed me some stronger stuff. I set up an appointment for the dentist but it wasn't going to be for a week. Well that night my face got swollen. We went to the hospital where they gave me a penecillin (sp?) shot a long with a couple others. On the way home I felt more relaxed than ever before in my life because of the shots. Man this was wonderful stuff. I didn't care about anything. The swelling went down, and the moment I layed down in bed at home I was asleep.

Since this was a critical situation I went to the dentist the next day. He determined that I had a facial infection and that I needed to have a root canal on the front tooth and 2 drainage holes drilled in my mouth. This required putting me to sleep. thumbup.gif The last thing I remembered was being fully awake in the surgeon's chair. I woke up at home in the recliner. I had walked inside from the car without remembering. I had 2 holes in the upper front part of my mouth and a hole in the back of my front tooth for drainage. Well now the other upper front tooth started hurting. I had strong pain pills, so until my next appointment with the surgeon at the dentist office I took those.

Well I went to work on a Sunday at the library I work at, checking in and out books at the counter. My tooth started hurting so it was time for those pain pills. Well that was the happiest Sunday afternoon I have ever experienced. I was the friendliest customer service guy the world had ever seen. laugh.gif I normally love my job and on this day I just never wanted to leave. Fortunately my coworkers knew I was on strong pain medication. This stuff was great.

So after that I had a second root canal on my other front tooth, had the holes patched up and that was it. I missed school (college) and work for a week. It was an abnormally hot week in April (80's in the Chicago area). What a weird experience.

Well, I think it depends on what you mean by injuries...

I kicked a table and almost broke my toe, it was all gross and huge and purple. ^.^

What else has put me in the hospital.. Well.. not this past February, but the one before I was so sick that I didn't go to school for almost two weeks I think and all I did was sleep, my parents thought it was mono until it didn't get better, so they took me to my doctor, who sent me to the hospital.

When I was really little, I had too much dairy and had a lactose intolerence attack. :P

and, that's all i can remember. There are certainly times that I remember that I've had injuries that I know I should've gone to the hospital, but when both your parents were apart of the medical field in the navy, sometimes it saves the trip (and the $$$)

I went roller-blading down a HUMONGOUS hill one day. I was on my way to a friend's house that lived right down the road. Well, about half-way down my skates knocked into each other ohmy.gif . I rolled for about 3 seconds then stopped. My mom was at the top of the hill screaming at me. I got up and saod, "I'm OK!"
I was heading up to the house and realized a trickle of blood from my elbow. Turns out I had knocked a 1 inch-deep-hole into my arm, but it wasn't bleeding badly. My mom freaked and rushed me to the ER. I got a shot RIGHT IN the wound, and I kept a pebble as a souvenir. Valuum (sp?) is awesome. I went home and watched some movie about bears. It healed fine. I NEVER CRIED!

I was once prescribed a couple of different medications to take over the course of a day. However my doctor never informed me that I was supposed to take them at different times. So I took them all in the morning after breakfast. When I got to school and was walking to my class the walls started to bow, and when I sat down in front of my computer the keys were moving on me. So I got up told my prof I couldn't do class that day, and called my mother to come take me to the hospital. Turns out the medications that were prescribed were all uppers, and my blood pressure when I got to the hospital was around 240/150. But because I had my mother take me to the hospital instead of calling an ambulance, I had to wait in the emergency room for 4-5hrs. By the time I got to see the doctor the effects had worn off and I was back to normal. I'm just lucky I didn't have a heart attack while in the waiting room.

I have suffered a number of injuries in my careers in football, wrestling, and rugby (i.e. broken shoulder, dislocated vertabrae) but I refused to go to the hospital. the only time was when I fell of my bunk in college a few years ago and ripped part of my ear off. They sewed it back together and it was fine. However the next weekend in a rugby game I was on the bottom of the pile and someone stepped on my ear and ripped the stiches off. I was forced to go back to the hospital and this time it hurt.

Back in the days when I was practicing judo (wich is now about a decade ago), I used to train with a good friend of mine, even so he was a lot bigger than me. One time, he did a move badly, and blocked my head while he was spinning the rest of my body. I heard my neck make a sound, and then another one when he slammed me down. And at that time, I couldn't move at all : I had to ask my mother, who was there to pick me up, to check if my toes where moving while I was trying to move them...and luckily they were.
I ended up at the hospital, with a severe neck strain, and an inversion of the spine curve, wich lasted until I went to see a chiropractor. This is the only time I spent at the hospital, and I feel pretty lucky to have made only a quick stop rather than a permanent stay (which, from what one of the doctors said, could have happen if my friend hadn't slammed me to the ground : he said that the 2nd shock sort of replaced the spine in a correct way, leaving me with only the strain and the inversion).

Hmmm...OH OH! When I was about 6 I hit my head on a coffee table while chasing my little brother around the house. The are above my eye was severely split open. All I remember was blood trickling down my mom's chest. She rushed me to the ER and the doctor made me mad. He said they had to staple my eyebrow. sleep.gif
I was only 6 so I screamed...It healed just fine.

Well, I had to go to the hospital once because part of my finger got smashed off (yes, you heard right, SMASHED off) by this big heavy wooden door in summer camp a while back. I had to have some skin from the side of my hand to be grafted onto the finger so it would heal. But it wasn't so bad that I couldn't play N64. THAT I did with impunity. wink.gif

-When I was 1 I got meningitis and was in the hospital for two weeks; I think that's why I used to get a lot of headaches all of the time, until the after effects finally wore off.

-When I was 7 I did a front flip on the trampoline, stumbled on landing, and went flying face-first into the metal bar on the outer rim. My lip was enormous for the next four or five days.

-When I was 8 I got a concussion, slamming the back of my head into a heavy table. I also got pneumonia that year. It sucked since I had to stay in the hospital for two days and then my bro had to take Shining Force 2 back to Blockbuster while I was away.

-When I was 13, I fell off the top of a metal-framed bunkbed and really whammed one of the small bones near your eye on the bottom part of the frame. My eye was bruised for weeks.

-Last summer I broke my little toe.

-In soccer I've taken enough shots to the balls that make the aforementioned injuries seem like love taps. laugh.gif

1. head smashed into a brick wall at age 11 ( concussion)
2.hit by car- 14 ( i actually jumped through the windsheild and only ended up slicing my leg )
3.cracked in the head by a bo-staff in karate- i think 14 again ( couple stitches )
4. jumped by two assholes while i was sleeping in a park -18 ( bottle broken over my head )
5. edge of table landed on big toe- 19...... ok, this ones kinda nasty, you see my toenail got pushed through the skin at the root.....the doctor attempted to sew it back in place, but after a couple weeks it popped back out and i just ripped it off and waited for it to grow back......which it did, only it grew over some of the scar tissue and for a while i had a really wierd deforemed toenail

First off, Smash, what the hell were you doing in a park? Was it at night? Anyways...

This didn't necessarily happen to me; it happened to my brother. My mom and dad were planting flowers at my house. My dad brought his truck around for the tools. My little brother happened to be playing in the truckbed and fell off the edge, landing on a pitchfork head first. He had a few stitches, but I remember I was putting together a Johnny Thunder Lego set when my mom rushed in with my bro bleeding from the head...

I have two urgent care stories, but no hospitals.

1 - I was at my uncle and aunt's house in Eugene, OR, which is notorious for incredibly bad allergies. This was in June, also notorious for incredibly bad allergies. My eye, like, exploded. The area around it completely swelled over and I had to go to the urgent care. The doctor's recommendation was to wear this crappy little mask wherever I went. I never wore it and just went to get allergy pills, which worked better than any mask ever would. Note that this was the first instance of allergies I ever had, and nobody knew that anything like that would happen to me.

2 - Just back in August, during college orientation, something bit my foot twice and I had to go to urgent care because it inflated insanely. See: http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~ngettlin/ankle.jpg . That's actually a picture from when I dropped a bowling ball on my ankle, but it's pretty much the exact same effect (just on the other foot). Whee!

kickflipping the bjs set, at 6 am, flicked out too far, when i caught my board my front (left) foot was barely on the nose, and when i landed it slipped off, rolled, and my board and all my momentum rolled over it, making it even worse. somehow managed to skate home, took my shoe off, and within 5 minutes had a lump no shit the size of a softball on the side of my ankle. had to go to the hospital and get a bunch of crap done there, it was fun.

had my adnoids (sp?) out when i was in like 7th grade, that was pretty rad.

ummm i snapped a bone in my foot kickflipping off of the side of 6 foot mini-ramp ledge at a skatepark, i landed actually, but something felt wierd in my foot. skated the rest of the night and by the time i got home it was feeling really wierd, and hurt a bit. i took my shoe off, and when i put my foot on the floor and put weight on it there was a very, very loud crack. my mother heard it several rooms away. this was followed by me hitting the floor very hardly. got x-rays, foot was broken, had a cast on for a month, it sucked.

bombing hills on lockport, was going about 30-35 mph when i hit a bunch of rocks, got speed wobbles, tried to run out of them, but the combination of the steepness of the hill and my own speed ended up being too much, fell and slid a good 20-30 feet on my side, tried to tuck and roll but apparently only got the tuck part. although they said it was better than if i would've rolled, haha. ended up taking all of the skin off of the side of my right arm, literally every layer down to whatever the hell is underneath. it was bleeding like a bitch, but i didn't really care as it was kind of numb at that point, finished going down the hill to a skatepark where some of my friends were, by the time i got there my whole arm was covered in blood, went to the back and washed everything off, and covered it in big bandaids. skated the rest of the night, after i went home my mom figured we should go to the doctors the next morning. we go, and they tell me that with the amount of skin i took off stitches were impossible, there simply wasn't any skin to sew together. the damage i had done was comparable to a third degree burn, with the lack of skin and the heat from the friction between myself and the pavement. so they gave me a couple ointment things i had to spread on it. that was by far the worst injury i've gotten skating, my arm had to be covered with gauze and such for such a long time, and it hurt so bad to move. still skated with it though, haha.

when i was 6 i broke my arm, i don't remember much about that though.

and i've broken toes a bunch of times, but they don't really bother me anymore.

See if you can catch the pattern...

9- After we won the 4th grade city basketball championship, me and my friend were swinging around and fell down, and I hit the bench with my hip on the way down. Walked/limped around for a week before finally going to the hospital, which told me I had a contusion and needed to be on crutches for a week.

11- During watching the 93 NBA Finals, I was playing basketball while watching the game on a nerf hoop in my living room (as I had to do back then...and still do today.) I slipped, fell down funny, and broke my arm in two places (we lived in a garden apartment, so it was all concrete under the floorboards. Only time I had to ride in an ambulance to the hospital. The paramedics that took me kept giving me updates about what was going on in the game, which was pretty nice (the Suns ended up winning in OT.) I had to go back a few weeks later because my cast fell apart, as a result of playing basketball, football, and baseball at least twice a day despite the lack of a right arm to use.

18- Broke my left index finger going up to block a shot, but he turned to pass it, so it came down right into my finger , dislocating it and chipping the joint. Hurt like hell.

19- Broke my right index finger in a pick-up game. I don't even know the specific play, I just looked down one minute and noticed my finger was kind of at an odd angle. Went to the UIC hospital. This was a mistake, as I can now no longer bend this finger all the way, despite it not being broken as bad as the other one pinch.gif

When I was in highschool I was playing in the last soccer game of the season, I got slidetackled, my knee caps went to the opposite sides of my legs. I blacked out. Woke up in the hospital. They did emergency surgery to repair the damage. I was told I would never work again. I lost all three of my full althetic scholarships to Georgetown, Georgia Tech, and Penn state. I was in a wheel chair for 9 months, crutches for a year and a half, and physical theraphy for almost 2 years.

... I am walking again and once more running the mile in 5 minutes flat. Not bad for someone they said would never walk again.

Also about three months ago I was jumped and mugged by four guys. They broke my jaw and I had to have surgery.

I broke my leg last year. and as a senior this year i dislocated my shoulder (still played in the most important conference game this year at right guard) sprained my ankle pretty bad and refractured my leg slightly. Its been a painful off season so far and since my doctor believes that ill get addicted to pain medication ive been stuck with over the counter pills..oh well

That's what you get for being rich, Ice. tongue.gif

Let's see, when I was still in early grade-school (hell, it may have been before Kindergarten, even), I ran into a tree. This in itself was not as bad as ramming my eye on a stubby portion of said tree. It started bleeding and my mom came and picked me up and took me to an ER. I guess everything turned out okay, but it may have something to do with why my right eye is slightly crappier than my left.

I believe it was in 6th grade that I went in for surgery on my chest. Since birth, it was recessed, and I guess my mom decided that now was the time to do something about it. It looks much better now, but I'm a scrawny little guy, so if you didn't know about the surgery before, you might not think that much had been changed. tongue.gif

Then in 7th grade, I took a spill off my bike on the way to school one morning. The handle crushed my left ring and pinky knuckles into the pavement. Ended up having a fricking HUGE needle in my hand, and a cast for several weeks. Those knuckles eventually came back, but are not as prominent as they once were.

I also was sent to the ER on two attempted suicide occasions, but I'll leave it at that.

Woke up Christmas Day when I was ten in extreme pain around the groin. For a few weeks prior, I'd been having cramping problems on my inner right thigh and it'd been steadily getting worse, but I'd assumed it had been nothing more than a pulled muscle that was being difficult. That morning it'd leaped from Defcon 1 to 5 overnight (or visa versa, I have no idea how those things work). I couldn't get outta bed and I was crying from the pain. Mom drove me to the ER where I was examined by a doctor and he said an 'exploratory' surgery might be necessary, which needless to say scared the all living christ outta me. I was dumped in a corner of the hospital for two week, forced on an IV. I couldn't eat anything and going to the bathroom was intense as the world tossed and turned like ship in a squall as soon as my feet hit the floor. Then, without warning a nurse comes in one day saying they're ready to operate. Well shee-it...

So I'm being carted down the hallway, feeling utterly helpless and terrified and mom asks if I'm nervous. Looking back, that's a pretty harsh thing to ask a ten year old about to have his nuts sliced open. I responded, "N-n-n-no."

I end up in the OR with one nurse checking out the equipment (the hospital's, not mine) while the heart beeping thing is doing it's...beeping thang. Nothing's attached to me, cept that revealing hospital robe, yet I still get scared shitless when the thing flatlines. So now the surgeon comes in and tells me to breath in the crap they's gonna use to knock me out and to count back from ten while I do it. Now I trust these people know what they're doing, so I figure I'll breath it in and conk right out. Still the general situation has me rather jumpy, so when I start breathing in that shit and my legs go numb, I calmly grab the mask and try to push it away to ask if that's normal. Somebody slams it back on my face and I panic. I start swinging everything I got, now just gasping for air. Then I'm out.

I wake up in a brightly lit and extremely sanitized little corner of HELL! Never before (and god willing, never again) had I felt pain like that. The first few hours of that recovery was truly on the top three list of the most horrible experiences of my life. I think they kick me outta the hospital a few days later, maybe even the day after.

Yeah...that wasn't a very nice Christmas present Santa...

lessee here if i can remember it all...

age 3 runing up and down hall in house ran full tilt into triangle edged door handle that my dad thought was too high for me to reach.... 2 stiches, sweeling, possible slight brain damage tongue.gif .

age 6 playing soccer ran full tilt into the "goals" since we were playing in the school playground the "goals" were chalked on a wal that had most of the pebble dash taken of. except the chunk that sliced into my knee and pealed the skin back

Choob? smile.gif

I've got two, and both involve vehicle accidents of some kind. When I was 6 and still living in Connecticut, I had to catch a school bus every morning to go to school. So we were driving along, and then we get rear-ended by a car and I bonk my head on the window. It hurt, so I started crying and everything. I remember a man talking to me, asking me if I'd seen stars or anything, and I said no, but they took me to the hospital anyway, just to make sure I was okay. And I was. And then I got to bring my hospital bracelet in to Show and Tell the next week. smile.gif

My other one happened more recently, so the details are clearer in my memory. It was about 8 AM on March 28th, the day before my dad's birthday; I'd turned 18 about two weeks before. My mom drove me to school, but instead of dropping me off right in front the way she usually did, she dropped me off at the corner about a block away. So I walked the rest of the way, enjoying the nice sunny weather. And then I crossed the street towards the school, and happened to look to my left, and saw this oncoming white truck. And I remember thinking, "Huh. There's a truck." And then, "It's not slowing down." And by the time I had realized that, it was too late to get out of the way. I ended up sorta bouncing off the bumper and then landing in the street about two or three feet away, after skidding on my elbows.

Well, the first thing I did was get up, to make sure I could. I was considerably shaken, but otherwise okay; I'd just banged my hips and scraped up my elbows real good. Luckily someone saw it happen and got the school security guard, and he came out and took control of the situation. I managed to make my way over to the lawn and sit down, and stayed there and bled from the elbows while I waited for the police to show up and everything. I actually felt more sorry for the driver than for me. Then the vice principal offered to drive me to the hospital, so I said okay; I didn't think I needed an ambulance. In the meantime, the security guard had called my mom and told her what happened, so she came to the hospital and met up with us in the waiting room. And then the doctor gave me some gunk to put on my elbows and a handful of big Band-Aids and sent me home, after telling me to call if I found any bruises on my stomach, because that might mean internal bleeding, but that never happened.

The driver of the truck called me later that day and apologized profusely, and I said I was fine, which I was. It was hard for me to lift my legs very high for a couple weeks afterwards because of my bruised hips, which meant I had to resign from the school production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream", but that was okay because I had been planning on resigning anyway. happy.gif My dad also called (he was out of town at the time--I forget why) and thanked me for the 'birthday present'. wink.gif

In retrospect, two funny things happened when I got hit: it dented my lunchbox, as well as the can of iced tea inside, and broke my cookie; and it knocked my sandals off. Also, throughout the whole incident, two of my friends had been waiting for me near the front stairs, and they never even knew what had happened until I told them later. tongue.gif

Anyone know what a planter's wart is? Well, I gotta go have surgery on my toe tomorrow to get one removed. For all that don't know what one is, it's a wart that, instead of growing outwards, it grows inwards. It's a stringy, cone-shaped wart that seeds itself on the outside of your toe. It is extremely painful if you keep pressure on it for a while. Basically they numb the hell out of my tow then cut into it. OMFG...I;m seriosuly about to puke. Well, gotta go collect those GF's, so I'll have somethng to do while coping with the pain. pinch.gif

OK...done with surgery. It was relatively painless. The shots didn't hurt too much and my toe got real big. The doctor showed me the wart...gross? The pain AFTER the numbness wears away is incredible, but that's partly because I have a 1 centimeter deep hole in my big toe. I bled a lot, but I'm OK.

First off, Smash, what the hell were you doing in a park? Was it at night? Anyways...

Well, actually, I was asleep on the curb, in front of my friends girlfriend's house, which is near a park......the reason i was asleep was because me and my friend both just got out of working at this catering hall, and we stopped by his gf's house to pick up our stuff. He went around the back while i sat on the curb, and the next thing you know ..............glass bottles, everywhere
