when you get palidor and learn it from equipping him. if you can do it earlier than that, I know the other answer but I won't post it here for fear of posting 2 answers

Actually, there are two answers to that question as it depends on the scenario you pick first.
Gau can Rage Cirpius and use Haste2, so that would be as soon as you get Gau; Celes learns it naturally, so as long as you pick her up at level 52 or beyond. Granted, that won't happen all too soon, but it's technically still possible for Celes to use that move before you even had a chance to have somebody else do it. -------------------- |

Out of curiosity, how do you plan to use Capture against a boss that you fight before you can get Locke or Gogo?

I would assume you need to use the Thief Knife, which would require Locke or Shadow. But you can walk up to the Colosseum from Kohlingen and go through a betting process to get the Merit Award which will let one of your characters equip it. Then, you would randomly steal a tonic by attacking with it.
The betting process would be TortoiseShld (win from Geckorex) -> Titanium -> Cat Hood -> Merit Award. Neal is very close. Just a couple details missing.
EDIT Ok. I was being nice. Neal didn't have much of anything right. First, Potion, Tonic, and Cursed Ring are not correct. Dullahan does not have those items to steal. Second, there is much much more to it to steal from him, than just 'getting" the Thiefs Knife. How you equip it at this point in the game is the real tricky part. One does not need to have an understanding of the inner workings of the code to figure this one out. But it does require lots of thought. The part you got close on was the fact that you must bet at the Colosseum. You are on the right track there. But there is much more to it. This is one of those things where it is possible to do, but not even I would sit there that long to make it work. Good luck. EDIT#2 You need to be much more specific about Colosseum bets. Which item do you bet to get what? And why is that helpful? This post has been edited by Detah on 9th November 2004 18:03 |

Can't you also get the Cursed Ring? I read somwhere a long time ago you could. It might just be another rumor though. If I am right the next question is up for grabs. I am not reading this whole topic.

Quote (Detah @ 8th November 2004 17:14) How you acquire the Thiefs Knife at this point in the game is the real tricky part. You mean equip it, right? 'cause you should have acquired it long before this point in the game. As for the equipping part... I assume for the sake of clarity you'll take an answer from any of the versions of the game? Or did you find what no one else could, a universal method of equipping ThiefKnife? -------------------- |

(Great question, Detah)
You have to start planning for it in the WoB: Using 3-BAR slot or magicite, you *happen* to trigger Ragnarok against a Ninja, either at the Cave to the Sealed Gate or the Floating Continent. Then, you just *happen* to get a Striker out of the deal. Don't forget to save Shadow, since you'll be needing him. One year passes... Now, when you first are able to reach the Colosseum, you bet that Striker to get Shadow back in the party. Shadow, of course, can equip the Thief Knife. Now, you take Shadow with you to Daryl's Tomb, where you fight Dullahan. Theif Knife has a 50% chance to try to steal, at which you get either an X-potion or a Genji Glove. -------------------- Food is like magic in my ears. - Djibriel Ogopogo lives. |

This can be done on any version of the game. By version I mean SNES cart or PSX CD. I am not aware of any differences otherwise.
Yes. I meant equip. That is the tricky part. At this point in the game there is no way to get Locke or Shadow in your party. That is the dilemma. Excellent attempt, Ogopogo. But no. You may indeed get the Striker with this method, but you cannot get Shadow this way. You will fight Chupon if you bet the Striker at the Colosseum at this point in the game. I believe Keith is correct, that the Shadow-Thamasa-bed scene is required before he will show up in the Colosseum. Ogopogo has also gotten the Steal item correct. You would Steal a Genji Glove. Ogopogo has this one almost figured out, however. |

okay i know you can get the theifs knife in narshe in the WOB, that seems like a key factor in this. Now assuming this is the case i am willing to wager there is some way that setzer can equip it, how you ask? simple setzer is the only one on your team at the time that can actually equip dirks if i am not mistaken. Now i am not totaly sure but i think the way to pull this off is by
Possible spoilers: highlight to view i think if it is anything like the drill/hat trick this should automatically equip another dirk, wich means you need to to sell all your pervious dirk. am i right? using the genji glove you get in the cave to the sealed gate -------------------- Don't fear the reaper! I knew I had seen this question before. It's much like Bonus Question 6 in the Advanced Tactics Quiz (ATQ), which claims that it is impossible to acquire a Merit Award, get Locke, Shadow, or Gogo, or do anything else that would allow you to steal from Dullahan before getting the Airship. However, the ATQ is over a year old at this point, so it may not be correct.
Therefore, the I believe that the answer is one of the following: 1) You can't. 2) Use the Sketch bug (which the ATQ specifically ignores) while still in the WoB and hope that you obtain a Merit Award, Aegis Shield, TortoiseShld, Titanium, Imp Halberd, Imp's Armor or Cat Hood. Then follow the Colosseum betting sequence from any of those items to acquire a Merit Award, use the Merit Award to equip the ThiefKnife on one of your characters, and fight Dullahan, hoping that the ThiefKnife special ability activates and allows you to steal either an X-Potion or a Genji Glove. 3) Use the Equip Anything bug (as described by Master ZED, and referenced just now by Lockes AlterEgo) to equip one of your characters with a ThiefKnife (probably Setzer, since he has few enough other weapons to get rid of) and go fight Dullahan as described above. 4) Take advantage of another bug that I am unaware of. (Is this what Master ZED is referring to?) |

I can give a hint, but I don't know the answer.
Quote This can be done on any version of the game. Currently, FF3us v1.1 is the only version of the game without a known method of stealing from Dullahan. Equip any weapon, a bug I found recently in Anthology, covers the PS versions. So whatever the method is in FF3us v1.1 has to be the answer. -------------------- |

It'd be a major hoot if it turned out that when killing Shadow at the Floating Continent and Relm is placed in the Cave on the Veldt, you actually can obtain Shadow at the Colloseum using Ogopogo's method because he isn't restricted by any event
![]() Not very likely, though. Consider it an answer anyway, as it's the best one I have... Edit Oh, and Ogo was right, it's a lovely question. I was missing them a little. ![]() This post has been edited by Djibriel on 10th November 2004 11:44 -------------------- |

Earlier I stated that "acquiring the Thief's Knife' was the tricky part of this puzzle. I did not mean to mislead anyone here. I meant to put the emphasis on the Thief's Knife part. To my knowledge there are only 2 ways to Steal in FF6, !Steal and Thief's Knife. By stating 'acquiring the Thief's Knife', I meant only to confirm that the Thief's Knife is the right direction to solve this question. I am 100% certain that you cannot get Locke or Gogo at this point in the game. So there you go. I have edited my previous post to be a little clearer on that.
Locke's AlterEgo- Very good try, LAE. But no. The Genji Glove does not allow you to Steal. Nor is the answer somehow Setzer-specific. So you are on the wrong track there. And nothing else in your answer allows anyone to equip the Thief's Knife; I have already tipped everyone off that the Thief's Knife is the right-track. I have never tried the Drill/Hat trick. I can neither confirm nor deny if this method works. But it is not the method I was thinking of. If anyone can confirm it, I would be glad to concede that you answered the question successfully. Corumdum- 1) I never post questions where the solution is "You can't.", "You are lying", or "Use glitch X to ...". 2) I 'discovered' the sketch bug numerous times on my SNES cart. I do not remember if Thief's Knife or the Merit Award are part of the inventory booty. If it is, I did not intend anyone to bug/glitch their game to solve this. I discourage people from glitching their games. Those memory sticks in those carts are pretty sensitive after 11 years. So don't mess around with this glitch. 3) As LAE above. 4) I have no idea what MZ is refering to. We'll see. Ogopogo- I am not aware of that prohibition. I am nearly certain I have seen enemies and characters use Potions and Tonics in there. Have you personally seen this part of the code or are you citing some third-party documentation? Could you please give your source. Dijbriel- If you didnt save Shadow at the Floating Continent, then he never shows up again in the game. I am sure of that. I have looked everywhere for him. Well, it is true, but if you need me to send you commented source I can do that too. A simple test would be to put three "Item" commands on Gogo and send it to the Colisseum. It won't use Item, because that's not allowed (mathematically it should use it 3/5 of the time, since there's always a hidden "Fight" command thrown into the mix). So, the answer is not to bet an item to fight the Cactrot, hoping that you'll use a Magicite, getting it to do Ragnarok's Metamorph, betting repeatedly and eventually getting the Merit Award, use that to equip the Thief Knife...
If there is a way, it can't involve Metamorphing in the Colisseum. Note that enemies can use items, because that's part of their attack scripts. -------------------- Food is like magic in my ears. - Djibriel Ogopogo lives. |

Ogopogo has the answer I was looking for.
If that is true, that one cannot use Items in the Colosseum, then I reluctantly withdraw my question. I am sorry for any excitement caused by this very cool question which did not have a legit answer. I think in the interest of justice, Ogo should go next for setting me straight. The full solution: A. Bet Elixir at Colosseum. Fight Cactrot. During fight, use Item Magicite and get Ragnarok Esper. Metamorph into Titanium or Imp Halberd. Bet Titanium or Imp Halberd to win Cat's Hood. Bet Cat's Hood and win Merit Award. Equip Thief's Knife and STEAL from Dullahan.// I have no idea how Leo's Aegis Shield could be instrumental in solving this question. But I would be very interested to know how it could. for the record, the answer to the second part of detah's question (what can you steal from him) is, according to ffonline, X-potion and Genji glove. if that is irrelevant or unneeded then forgive me. I only wish I remember the great question I had.

For the record people Ogopogo is right you can't use Item in the colleseum. That is so you don't waste rare items like elixer. That is the same reason Throw is prohibitied, except replace Elixer with Excalibur. I have tried it myself and under no circumstance has a fighter used Item or Throw. I am not sure about slot but when I did use Setzer in the colleseum, it never happened.
Sorry if this question has been asked but do you realy expect me to read 42 pages? When is the earliest you can get these Items? •Running Shoes •Ribbon •Thunder Rod •Wall Ring The only restriction is no ragnarok maddness. Also from what I did read of this topic, this is an easy one. That means no hints. This post has been edited by Tonepoet on 12th November 2004 16:23 -------------------- |

•Running Shoes
-South Figaro, rich man's basement in Locke scenario. There's a secret room if you keep going south in the narrow hallway that leads to a bunch of jail doors. Its in a chest. •Ribbon -Rich man's basement, South Figaro as well. Its after you use the clock key in a basement before you escape with Celes. •Thunder Rod -Cave between narshe and South Figaro, Locke's scenario (if you didn't open the chests the first time you came through). •Wall Ring -Jidoor, world of balance, in the auction house. |
