Japanese gaming news site Quiter has some of the first Final Fantasy XII art and screenshots I've yet seen. We appear to have good renders of the male and female leads, some early screenshots, and a cluttered scan of the logo.

If you can't hack navigating through the pics in Japanese (it shouldn't be hard), an English-language mirror is available at RPGFan..

I'm filling in for the news staff at the moment, most of whom are having intermittent troubles getting to the site as described in my news post of a few days back. That said, here's my commentary: unless they stop using Tetsuya Nomura as the lead character designer, they're going to turn a lot of people off. Aren't we all getting just a bit sick of seeing the same character designs since FF7? Thank goodness Amano came in to do FF9 and 11.

Wasn't the character designer for Final Fantasy XII supposed to be Akihiko Yoshida (Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics)? I'm beginning to wonder if it's right to blame the identikit characters on Nomura, who did do good work for Final Fantasy VII, or the people who 3Dify the artwork.

Although Final Fantasy IX did indeed have a distinct look to it.

I can't find any info on who the character designer is. It doesn't look like anything I've seen Yoshida do, though. I hope I'm wrong.

And I will freely admit that Nomura's work was great in FF7. He just never branched out afterwards.

In my opinion, you can certainly blame a lot of the problem on Nomura - Looking at original character art for his games shows the resemblances before anyone else touches the art. However, it could be that Squenix is pushing him in that direction against his will. Maybe we'll know someday when Nomura writes memoirs.

Those characters sure look a heck of alot like the ones in FFX/2.
Especially the one girl. Isn't that the same pose they had for Yuna(?) in FFX-2?

assesments:

The femal lead reminds of Yuna in two ways
A)- apperance and
cool.gif- her bottom is slightly visible poking out of her lower clothing in the http://www.rpgfan.com/news/pictures2003/ffxii3.jpg shot. (honest, i wasn't staring!) blush.gif well, okay, i was.

and the lead blokes... reminding me of Tedious Tidus, or Graham Norton...
or 'Mr Sprout-Head', Leonardo Di Caprio... either way, he looks a bit camp.

one last thing: in http://www.rpgfan.com/news/pictures2003/ffxii2.jpg theres a thing resembling a Pink Lizardman from Warhammer...

this may be worth playing yes, but if its like 10, whoevers last out switch the light off....

I didn't notice the ass. I thought she looked okay.

The pose is similar, but the angle is different.

the FF characters in the odd numbered titles tend to look similar since 7 cloud, zidane and this guy look a lot like each other facialy.

Except that FF12 is even-numbered.

I notice also that the Roman numeral XII is there, despite an earlier topic suggesting it was changing away from that.

True. The first thing I thought when I looked at the screenshots was "Yuna Raider". Not that there's anything bad about that in my opinion. I'm excited about Yuna Raider and I'm excited about FF12 at this point.

Other than that, the images are kind of busy with all of the color. Maybe they'll make it work though.

i think the character design for the girl is just excellent. (i am kind of surprised you didn't take reservation to her outfit, tho, beth.) but the guy is just way too girly -- past the girliness of tidus and zidane, just off-the-wall effeminate. boo thumbdown.gif

I didn't notice her outfit. happy.gif It's not as clearly visible as the FFX-2 pictures, and I frankly wasn't looking for it.

Awsome, another final fantasy coming out. I have been hearing about this one for some time, but I haven't been able to see any pictures on it. I can't wait to learn more about.
