I had to vote Ultima, without question.
Not only is the rolling blue sphere of annihilation visually stunning, the sound effects of the spell is impressive as well. If you play the game with a sound system with generous bass or large subwoofer, you will *FEEL* the power of Ultima as well as see it! It starts out as a low rumble and raises in pitch, like a nuclear weapon has just been detonated. I feel that the sound effect related to the spell is as important as the graphics. For example, I like the way Pearl looks on the screen, but it has the most annoying, screeching, whiny sound effect! I think it sounds terrible. Flare Star and Goner are nicely done as well. I also second the illegal vote for "H-Bomb". I always get tremendous satisfaction when Setzer calls down the nuke! -- amosender |

Oi!
I was really torn here mates! I was torn between FlareStar and Pearl, FlareStar being the most suprising and beautiful attack I ever got from a monster (arghh! I love this attack! It kept healing up Umaro in the Colosseum!) and Pearl is sheer beauty and holyness (Basically, it's the prettiest Holy spell ever witnessed by me until FFIX's Bahamut vs. Alexander) I finally voted FlareStar though. The visual potential pushed it. Hip-hip-hurray for FlareStar! -------------------- "I fell off the mountain of words at around the 10,000ft mark. Good point amosender, sound does play a significant role. Quasar has some mad bass as well. I play on a tiny TV with a big stereo system, so I definately know what you mean about bass. I highly recommend a good sound system when playing FFVI, noooo doubt about it!

I voted Other. I honestly couldn't remember what Overcast or Train looked like. Why do the coolest spells have to be sooo rare? Does that make sense to spend tons of time coding something that could easily NOT be seen in 10 normal playthroughs?
Meteor is pretty neat, it takes me back to the FF1 Sky Castle setting. Pearl is not quite what I expected from a Holy attack. I expected white lights and laser beams, I guess, not some twirling cylinder reminiscent of the Sasquatch tunnel on the Six Million Dollar Man. Grand Train is nice with great sound effects, but not bright enough to illicit a full effect. Quasar is kinda cool but far too short-lived. A bit longer showing and more sparkly things, yep, thats what that spell needed. The poll asks which Spell, but you included Lores and Enemy Specials as well. So if any full screen attack/spell/special is fair game, then I would also like to put in a vote for X-Meteor and Sonic Boom. X-Meteor reminds me a bit of the Choco/Mog Summon in FF7, fat cat falls on the enemies. Kinda light-hearted and fun. And Sonic Boom kept the same graphic as Guile's Sonic Boom from Street Fighter and made it a projectile. Nice touch, Square. Does good damage, affects all enemies and sets Seizure, not bad for a free attack (Gau's Telstar RAGE). Palidor's Sonic Dive is a neat attack, but did they have to choose such an ugly bird? Think the skraggly old vulture Aeon straight out of Rudolph's Shiny New Year. Overall, I would have voted for Meteor if it had a little more pop; some bells, whistles or pretty lights. Sadly, I think square devoted too much time to the incredibly rare attacks (Red Cards, X-Meteor, Star Prism and Grand Train) and didn't spend enough time on the common ones. But I do think they corrected that juxtaposition in FF7. |

Don't know if anyone mentioned it, but I like Justice (Alexandr's spell).
Also cool are Overcast, Quasar, Flare Star, GrandTrain, and Goner. Shock and Merton are also nice. (Which is why you get the Retainer and Mover rages) This post has been edited by Ogopogo on 7th February 2004 21:34 -------------------- Food is like magic in my ears. - Djibriel Ogopogo lives. |

I haven't seen many spells, but wind slash (not sure if it's full screen )looks cool, so does el nino. Pearl looks better though.

Without a doubt, my favorites are Train and Overcast. It was a close call, but I in the end decided to vote for Train. The 3-D spinning triangle effect always caught my attention, and the blue / yellow flashes are stunning.
Also, the fact that it is only seen in the final battle against Kefka (you all know my position on this devilishly cool fiend ![]() -------------------- Je ne t'aime plus, Mon amour... Je ne t'aime plus, Tous les jours... |

By far the best is Ultima (FFVI). No other spell comes close to the simple beauty of the rising crest of energy and the swath of destruction it brings

I voted for Pearl. I do love the animation, the move and the fact that of all the things 'Holy' could have become, Woosley picked 'Pearl'.

Well, you have to understand, that at the time, Nintendo of America had somewhat strict censorship policies enforced. For that reason, the name Holy was renamed to Pearl (and Death to Doom, Jihaad to Crusader, etc.).
