I don't know if this is ture, but I think I read or heard from somewhere that if you use Shadow to throw the atma weapon at the last boss, you can kill him in one hit!

I don't know where you heard that, but ..
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
there's four tiers to fighting Kefka, and using Atma Weapon even at most powerful levels for Shadow will do a 9999 once, which will not kill any of the tiers, even Kefka in his final form.

'Nuff said of that, and I think this topic is a little overworked by now.

"Unfortunately for Locke he has the 12th worst magic power stat"--no wonder I noticed he was weak as a magic user when I got my first magicite!

And I agree with whoever said that although there isn't really a main or best character plot-wise or battle-wise, there are some characters who are developed more fully (such as Terra, Locke, Celes, and Setzer) and others who are more useful in battle (such as Sabin, Gau, and Gogo).

I have just heard something rather interesting on Shadow.  I don't know if this is ture, but I think I read or heard from somewhere that if you use Shadow to throw the atma weapon at the last boss, you can kill him in one hit!  So that would make him the strongest character in the game, unless other characters can kill Kefka in one hit.

That's what happens when you have too many characters that permanently stay in your party. Story tends to be sacrificed for numbers.
Also kind of what bothers me about FFVI (FFVII as well) - with so many characters, it no longer seems like an RPG, it seems more like a strategy game where you're raising an army.

I don't think it's a problem of having so many characters. In any story, you will have characters who have more of the plot and ones who have less. It's basically inevitable. Nevertheless, FFVI is an excellently made game, since I think it cuts out most unnecessary stuff, but leaves enough in to make the game believable. For example, a background of Mog or Umaro probably wouldn't help make the plot more interesting; nor does Gau's crazy father (even though it does offer comic relief), but he's included as one of those irrelevant things that happen in real life. One of the main assets of this game is balance--it doesn't have too much or too little of anything.

I'm actually making my own RPG which will include about 20-30 permament "team" (I won't call it "party" because your actual parties are usually 3 characters and in some situations go up to 6) members. But as you play through the game you will encounter about 100-150 playable characters in total. What you end up having is many scenarios where you have to split up your team (and any current temporary allies) into various groups, and a one- or two-person party might pick up a new ally or a four- or five-person party might split into two groups while you are in these scenarios.

For example:
a battle in a city:
your team sets up 5 groups of 3
your main enemy sets up 6 groups of 3
another group which used to be part of your enemy's group but split off sends in 3 groups of 3
all groups are dissolved when people run in different directions and split up in the midst of the battle
about 6 new characters join up with members of certain groups on your team
and you fight alongside some of the characters from that "another group"

in rpgs it is still possible to have quality with quantity. for example, the suikoden games. there are hundreds of characters, yet they all play a special role within each game. the great thing is, as the game progresses to new games, some characters get their time in the spotlight. but on the flipside, some characters pale in importance.
