I just got back from Walmart. Mom and I had went. I had gone mostly to see if 'Super Mario Advance 4' was out. (SUPER MARIO BROS. 3 RULES!!!) While there, I ran into a guy looking over the GBA games also. I started talking to him and told him I was looking for SMA4. I asked him what he was looking for, and he said 'Fire Emblem'. We spent a good 5 minutes talking about games in general and how the gaming industry need to focus back on gameplay (instead of graphics). He then pointed out that FFT (GBA) was a good game and I said I have yet to play it. We then started to talk about the FF series and that's where the fun begins.

I had asked if the FFT (GBA) was anything like the FFT (PSX). He said, 'not really'. Then he proceeded to say that the FFs of the PSX era were the best. With that, out came the statement, "FFVIII is the best".

I GREATLY disagreed with that statement. I said how I disliked the battle system, magic system, plot, etc. He countered with (all the above mentioned) was the best out of any FF. I'm greatly aware that everyone has their own opinion but that was too much. I said that," FFVIII contained plot hole big enough to drive a semi through.

Ooops, did I forget to mention Edea was my wife? Oh yeah, we knew each other as kids and grew up together.

His response to that was, "it all made sense, see it had to do with different time periods".

Yeah.....

This continued on till he finally took his leave and I still attempted to look for SMA4. We never said anything impolite to each other, though I was tempted to say "you're full of crap". I'd describe the conversation as heated but civil.

Have any of you people ever got in a weird conversation/fight in a store? (and I don't mean trying to haggle with a bum over spare change)

he mighta been a stoner. that "time periods" comment is a dead giveaway. i like 8 just fine, but i do understand why people dont like it, and it has NO replay value whatsoever. hell, maybe he was just retarded.

probably the most unusual conversation ive had to be involved in was when a customer came into the butcher shop and asked if we have rocky mountain oysters. he then proceeded to tell me he likes when theyre the size of softballs and how he likes to skewer them pinch.gif , and put them on the barbecue. "theyre nice and salty."

for those of you not trained in the meat business, rocky mountain oysters are bull testicles. yes, people do eat these. and the idea of skewering them and putting them over a grill sends a chill up my spine.

FFVIII's a good game, but not the best.
I generally avoid video games stores, and only stay in there for a short period of time because I'm bound to beat up fanboys.

Well you kept your cool under pressure to drawn unwanted attention to yourself in a shopping centre. Some people have different tastes and thats just people. You conducted yourself with tact so you should pat yourself on the back. If I ever got into a conversation like that and I thought he was "full of it" I really wouldn't have cared either way.

I never had a wierd conversation in a store all the conversations I had were worth having. There was a wierd situation in my Bank when a Customer Service clerk was talking to this old lady for half an hour and no other staff would take the second desk so I could just get a copy of my bank details. They were talking about the unfair abuse Bank tellers get and I thought "With you two talking c***and holding people up no wonder you get the abuse". Well she finally left and I finally could get a copy of my bank details so I could do government things, the teller says "thanks for banking with us". I smiled back and left thinking "Your damn lucky you even got a smile out of me".

So yeah I think every one has a story.

You know what I can say about people who smoke pot? They might not always like each other, but they sure as hell wouldn't judge one another much. Because they will always have something on common, something that others ridicule them for.

Getting back on topic here, I've had plenty of altercations, I was accused of spitting off the rail of a 5 story mall and called the person accusing us a jerk off.

Not to mention every person who talks crap because they see the appearence. I don't let it bother me anymore. I bet them at thier own game of talking trash and bail. It's never gone to fist-fights, but then again, who knows?

Erm. Actually, that's not really a plot hole. Why would he want anyone to know that Edea is his wife? He wants people after her, he doesn't want them to know that he's emotionally involved with

I think it would just complicate matters. Give your soldiers (SEEDs) all the information they really need to capture her, and let them go.

But then, I really like FF8. :-P

I think I've had conversations like that in stores, too, but I do'nt quite remember them.

I don't think it has plot holes as such, it just springs a lot of wacky, annoying and completely implausible developments on you and explains them via the deus ex machina (well, sort of) of GF memory loss, then tries to make you forget by putting a good battle afterwards. It's the gaming definition of tedium (especially the second disc), and if any FF deserves to be relegated from "game" to "interactive 'entertainment'" status, it's that one.

I could rant all day about the steaming cesspool of badness that was FF8, but that wouldn't be on topic. So here's something that is: while I'm far too spineless to argue with real humans in a shop, my ex-housemate did once pounce on some kinds who were "dissing" (as I believe the kids on the streets are saying) the Gamecube, preferring the PS2, when the GC wasn't even out here to make a comparison. While I'd love to say that my housemate simply beat them up for making uninformed decisions, he chose instead to argue that the unreleased Gamecube was the better system. Luckily we were already in the checkout queue, so it didn't last long (if you've never tried to argue with rubbish kids, don't: it's like banging your head against a brick wall, since they don't even understand half the arguments you make).

Ah, it reminded me of when the great Super Play was still around and I was a blind N64 zealot. Fun times.

I would have kicked the FF8 lover in the junk, then found the last copy of Fire Emblem and bought it out from under him.

very true; i was about to say this.

but come on, it JUST SO HAPPENED that all these kids from the orphanage had collisions thru the workings of fate and only irvine remembered (and on top op that, never mentioned it)? that was kind of ridiculous and seemed like a quick-fix patch to the story. i don't think it was even neccessary, either. if it was just squall and seifer from the orphanage it would have worked just fine -- squall still would have been able to have his internal struggle, it's not like the other characters' struggles were very developed anyhow.

i recently replayed ffviii (and dmc2, unrelated). i liked it a hell of a lot more on the second time thru -- it was actually an enjoyable game and the story (except for that bullshit) made sense to me. people argue against the viability of ultimecia, but i don't see her as a problem but in fact an interesting addition to the plot -- she certainly wasn't a quick-fix; i don't know why people whine because the entire story is not divulged to them all at once. you knew about ultimecia halfway thru the game (unlike zeromus and necron). but i still don't like certain aspects of the gameplay -- the draw system was terrible, and although the junction system was innovative and fun to play around with, i'm certainly glad it was a one-game thing, and it still pales in comparison to sphere grid and materia.

oh. and dante's badass factor has to be the highest of any video game hero ever.

Come on what is wrong with FFVIII, granted its not the best FF game but I enjoyed it better then FFVII. As you said everyone is entitled, everyone has their own opinion and I think FFVIII is better then FFVII. However, the way the store clerk was describing stuff did sound like he was "way out there".

I've never had a weird video game store conversation (though there was that time in EBX where I spent 20 minutes looking at Suikoden II before taking it to the register and the guy grinned at me and said, "Finally decided on something, did we?" and I was embarrassed.)

Oh, but once I got propositioned to join an FFVII "Honey Bee" type ring (if you know what I am talking about) in NYC. I'd gone down to the NYC Public Library to do research one weekend and afterwards went to Kinokuniya bookstore. While I was looking at the magazines, this middle-aged man came up to me. He looked like a regular businessman-type person. He said, "It's nice to see young women come into a bookstore nowadays." I thought he was insulting my intelligence or something, so I said, "Yes, I was at the library doing research earlier today." Then he said, "Is that so? Do you study here?" and like the idiot I am I said, "Yes, I attend Vassar." Then he, being the idiot he is and overlooking the fact that I obviously speak perfect English and live in the States, said, "I know it's hard for young women in the City. Would you like to come work in my jewelry store?" and I was like "NO." I moved away a little and considered telling one of the store employees, but I figured the man wouldn't do anything in a crowded bookstore. But he followed me and said, "I don't suppose there's any way I could see you again?" and again I said "NO." Then he went away. But I felt extremely paranoid for the rest of the day. People are so sketchy >.<

When I was first looking to buy Chrono Cross, the guy who helped me find it told me it was a total waste in money. I asked him why he had said that, and he went on to explain the magic system and the plot. He went on to compare it to most other square soft games. We actually ended up getting into a fight over Sephiroth and his actual link with the Ancients. See, the guy skipped the part where they explain that

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
Jenova is his mother, and that Lucia was only the host mother, and Sephiroth feels the ancients stole from his Mother.

So I instantly disregarded his opinion on Chrono Cross, because, the guy doesn't even pay attention to the plot, how can I take his opinon on the plot of Chrono Cross seriously. I bought it, and he told me he expected to see me back by the end of the week, to return it. A week later, I showed up, told him that I actually loved the game. I talk to him (Jeffrey) every time I go to buy a video game now, and we discuss all kinds of video games.
