I assume you traded Ragnarok for the sword, eh?
The shield is in the basement of one of the locked houses in Narshe, if I recall correctly. Since you know that the cursed and paladin shields are one and the same, I assume you know how to transform it. If not, though, just equip the cursed shield for 255 battles. It also helps to equip the ribbon, because it takes away most of the damage the cursed shield does to you. My, why isn't this in the FAQ? -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

I think you can find it in the FF VI section, but I'll tell anyway.
It's in Narshe : you need to have Locke in your party in order to open the doors. In one of the houses, a man is in sick in his bed ; talk to him, and he will give you the Cursed Shield. After that, you know what to do : just equip the Cursed Shield (with a Ribbon as onr of the Relics, so you can use the character), and fight for 255 encounters. Good luck. Edit : after investigations, I can now say that it is in the FFVI section, in chapter 42 of the walkthrough "Narshe revisited". This post has been edited by Mr Thou on 1st October 2003 20:24 |

Ok, i guess i must just have missed it in Narshe then. I looked in the FAQ but it only told me how to transform the shield, rahter than actually where to get it. Thanks.

Since we are on this Cursed topic, can anyone give me any information as to why Square created a Cursed shield and a Cursed Ring, but only one can be transformed to Paladin?

Along with the Ribbon it is a good idea to equip the Safety Ring relic (called Safety Bit for SNES players). This protects your character from the "Condemned" effect.

I've heard somewhere that there was a Paladin Ring in the game, and that you could find it the same way as with the Cursed Shield (win 256 battles with it equipped), but only if your cartridge was made before a certain date. I don't know if it's true, it sure sounds like a rumour, but it would be cool if it was true.

I believe you can learn X-Zone off the cursed ring, but... it's a lot easier and a lot less of a pain to just get the esper.

I've got the cursed shield, and have it equiped, and have for what seems like at least 256 battles. Is there any way to tell how many battles it's been?
Thanks! Tracy ![]() |

So far as I know, unless you keep a tally or are hex editing with your emulator, there is no way to tell how many battles your Cursed Shield has been through until it transforms. I like to work on the Shield on the Veldt even though Leap and Return battles don't count toward the Shield's count. Keeps it from getting too boring if I'm getting Rages as well...

Thanks! Tracy (Just something that would be good experience for me....KWIM?) |

Actually, you could use a PAR code in ZSNES to read it. Try this:
1. Enter 7E1DD5?? into the Cheat menu. The ?? can be any number since you're only going to view the contents of this offset. This is where the battle count is normally kept outside of battle. 2. View the number under PV (stands for Previous Value). That's the number of battles you've fought with the shield in hexidecimal. Your windows calculator can convert hex to decimal for you if you set it to scientific (enter the hex number with the hex option selected, then click dec). 3. Delete the code; the PV will be written back to the offset so it will seem like you never entered the code. If you kept it, whatever you entered into ?? will be the new battle count, and it will be kept at that value, which you don't want unless you plan on cheating the system by entering FF as the value (255 battles; with this, IIRC, it will try to increment and in turn cause the game to uncurse the shield). If I need to clarify further, don't hesitate to post or PM. Also, I hope you didn't fight those battles with Gogo, because it can't uncurse the shield. Yikes!!! I've been working on this for about 3 days now, and when I checked the vaule, it was 74 -- or 116 in dec!
![]() ![]() Thanks though. And my party right now is Terra, Mog, Locke, and Strago. (I think those were the original names -- I changed all of them!) ![]() If I switch who the shield is eq'ed on, does it start again from 0, or does it keep counting down? |

The count won't ever go down until it hits 0 again, which indicates the curse was dispelled. It hits 0 when the byte overflows (incremented at 255). That's why it's 256 battles; 255 to max the counter, 1 to overflow and uncurse the shield.
