Sony announced today that it would be cutting 20,000 jobs worldwide. The 20,000 jobs constitue 13 percent of the company's total employees. It is not certain where the jobs will be cut, but it is known that the first 7,000 will be from Japan.

Poor sales of the Playstation 2 and Trinitron TV sets are being blamed for contributing to Sony's declining revenue and its thus needed restructuring.

It's never good to hear about job cuts. Hopfully, those who are getting layed off will find new employers quickly.

13% offloaded seems a bit drastic to e. I thoguht PS2 and the Tv's were doing well. Sony overestimating their sales possibly also to blame?

I too hate job cuts, but I used to sell electronics and would always get annoyed when people would by things just because they said Sony on them, regardless if it was the best product or not. I would be suspicious that Sony was banking on cornering more of the electronics field than they possibly could have, and that in some way or another caused them to over-spend on something.

Even though I don't like cuts, and I love PS and PS2, I would most like to see other companies not get swallowed up by Sony. The video game systems, by the way, are the only Sony things that I by.

Considering on how much into the electronics industry they're in, I'm surprised the PS2 (and whatever that other thing is) alone could cause something this massive.

Article in the Daily Record (-a scottish Tabloid Newspaper.-) i read this morning balmed the lack of foresight into LCD TV's, downturn in Mobile/Cellular phone industry, and, er, Jennfier Lopez and Ben Affleck.

their ps2 sales arent that bad, they are whooping xbox and gamecube... its just sony always over estimates, if they didnt have such a huge ego they wouldnt be having this problem. :\

Its beacuse Gigili (or whatever the bob it was) flopped, and that was a Columbia film... and thats a sony owned comapny...

yeah i know. Our tabloids are really bad at maths. and gettignt eh gender of kids...

anyway, UK Unions are tryign to get sony to confirm that no jobs will be lost in the UK.
But the axe has to fall soemwhere...
